R-DAY: OVER 500 PATIENTS TREATED AT HEALTH CAMP AT RURAL INFO CAMPAIGN

Luxmikantapur: Tuesday, January 26, 2010.

Over 500 persons suffering with various ailments or otherwise were checked up, advised necessary medications and issued on-the-spot medicines at three free camps attended by leading specialist doctors that included Paediatrist, Oncologist, Gynecologist, Eye Specialist and General Physicians here today. Press Information Bureau, in association with Directorate of Filed Publicity, put up these camps as part of the Republic Day celebrations at the ongoing Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign (PIC) organized at Bijoygunj Bazar, Natter Math. The physicians were led by Cancer Specialist, Dr. Debasish Jatua. The camps were put up to mark the celebration of 61st Republic Day today, the penultimate day of the five-day event that is underway here in the South 24-Parganas district of West Bengal since January 23, 2010. Media and field publicity agencies of the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry are conducting the PIC to create mass awareness in terms of all the rural development projects and the Right to Information Act in this remote area.

The day's campaign started at 9'O clock sharp in the morning when Shri Santanu Palodhi, Addl. Director General (M&C), PIB unfurled the Tri-colour at the central ground of the PIC venue. Panchayat representatives and social activists present on this occasion also paid their respect to the National Flag and martyres of the nation. Dr. Jatua led a seven-member team from Kolkata's leading hospitals to conduct general and specialist checkups at one of the health camps. The other camps were put up at PIB and DFP pavilions by medicos from the district. Longest queues were seen at the first one where most patients reported with eye problems. Dr. Ashok Kandari, Block Medical Officer (Health) and Shri Rakibur Rahman, BDO, Mandirbazar served as overall supervisors. Dr. Sourav Majhi, Dr. Dipankar Kundu, Dr. Dwaipayan Jha, Dr. Rabin Naskar, Dr. Prasun Ghosh and other physicians conducted all the three camps till late in the afternoon. They referred the patients suffering with serious ailments to various Block, District and Kolkata hospitals as per magnitude of the ailment.

Three troupes of the Song and Drama Division staged a patriotic forenoon of songs, dances and drama after the flag hoisting ceremony at the PIC fair ground. At conclusion of the health camps in the evening the troupes had anoher round of stage shows depicting NREGA, Pulse Polio Immunization, SGSY and RTI themes in folklore format for the rural audience.
