Meantime, the  all-party meeting convened by the UPA Government to discuss the Women's Reservation Bill failed to arrive at a consensus on Monday.Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav reiterated their opposition to the Bill in its present form.Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had called the all-party meeting in an attempt to build a consensus on the Bill ahead of the second half of the budget session of Parliament. On the other hand, the Supreme Court Monday dismissed a Hyderabad resident's plea for implementing an agreement signed by regional leaders in 1956, pledging to protect rights and interests of the people of Telangana region in the new state of Andhra Pradesh then being formed.

Police today seized the passport of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and asked him not to leave the country as they questioned him in the wake of a complaint of cheating lodged by the father of a local girl Ayesha Siddiqui claiming that she was married to him.

29-year-old Ayesha was also questioned by Hyderabad Police which is trying to verify authenticity of the 'nikahnama' cited by the Siddiqui family and that of the photo showing her along with 28-year-old Shoaib, a senior police officer said. The case has been transferred to Central Crime Station, a wing of the city police, he said, adding that Shoaib has been asked not to leave the country.

Shoaib told a police team this morning at the Jubilee Hills residence of 23-year-old tennis star Sania Mirza that he had been tricked into marriage with Ayesha.

"The city police questioned Shoaib Malik for one-and-a-half hours and they have also seized his passport. Immigration authorities have been informed about the case filed against Malik and his passport seizure," Additional Commissioner of Police (Coordination) Dwarka Tirumala Rao said.

Rao said, "As part of the investigation, a police team visited Sania's residence today. We are probing the matter."

The team reached this morning the posh Jubilee Hill residence of Sania where Shoaib has been staying since his arrival here on Saturday following a complaint lodged by the father of Ayesha, Mohammed Siddiqui yesterday at the Banjara Hill police station. Sania and Shoaib are scheduled to get married here on April 15.

"We are trying to collect evidence. Shoaib is cooperating and Sania is supporting him. They say they know the truth behind the whole issue," a police official said after the team talked to the cricketer.

During questioning, Shoaib told the police that he had been "cheated" by the Siddiqui family and tricked into marriage, he said.

The Pakistani cricketer had yesterday claimed that he was emotionally forced into the 'nikahnama' with the Hyderabad girl but said the marriage was invalid as her family had cheated him and ruled out divorce.

He said to this day he has not met the girl whose photographs were sent to him by the Siddiqui family purported to be that of Ayesha.

The charges against Shoaib are that of harassment of Ayesha, cheating to marry another girl and criminal intimidation including threats to her to keep quiet, according to Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan.

Siddiqui family alleged Malik of harassing Ayesha, cheating to marry another girl and criminal intimidation including threats to her to keep quiet.

Meanwhile, the police also asked Malik not to leave the city without their permission.

City Police Commissioner A K Khan said immigration officials were also put on alert.

Police are taking legal opinion since Mailk is a Pakistani national.

"The Banjara Hills police have received a complaint by Ayesha Siddiqui against Shoaib Malik. We have registered a case against Shoaib. Now we will take legal opinion quickly before taking further action," Additional Commissioner of Police D. Thirumala Rao said.

A case under Sections 420 (cheating), 498-A (dowry harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation) has been booked against Malik at the Banjara Hills Police Station.

Malik, who landed in Hyderabad on Saturday, admitted to his marriage with Ayesha, but claimed it was invalid.

Malik also accused Ayesha of cheating him as he believed the girl he was marrying was the one in the photographs sent to him by her.

Woman`s Bill

Lalu Prasad has demanded a quota for Muslim and Dalit women, and women of other backward castes.

Interacting with media, after the all-party meeting, Lalu said: I thank the government for this all-party meeting. But Muslim, backward and Dalit women must be given a quota. Our stand has not changed."

After the meetiing, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Bill would look after the interests of the minorities.

Janata Dal (United) President Sharad Yadav has also been demanding a quota within quota.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has supported the bill.

The Government is hoping to introduce the Bill in the Lok Sabha when parliament reconvenes on April 15.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is demanding that the Bill be passed in its present form.

The Rajya Sabha had last month passed a Constitution Amendment Bill that provides for 33 per cent reservation of women in Parliament and state assemblies.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, NDA convenor Sharad Yadav, Basudeb Acharia of the Communist party of India (Marxist), Gurudas Dasgupta of the Communist Party of India, Nageshwar Rao of the Telugu Desam Party, and T R Baalu of the Dravida Munnetra Kazagam were present at today's meeting.

Telengana

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice Aftab Alam and Justice Deepak Verma dismissed the plea saying that the apex court cannot entertain such petitions.

The court cannot interfere with the policy decisions of the government, the bench said, dismissing the plea of Hyderabad resident M. Narsimha Swamy.

An advocate by profession, Swamy argued that the leaders representing the Andhra and Telangana regions, before the formation of the state in 1956, had entered into a Gentlemen's Agreement to protect the rights and interests of the people of Telangana region.

But the agreement remains a dead letter till date, said Swamy and sought directions to the central and state governments for implementing the accord.

Swamy said the accord provided for due and proper devolution of funds for development of Telengana region, which has been consistently ignored by leaders of Andhra region.

But the bench dismissed the plea, cutting short Swamy's argument.

Buddhadeb slams Chidambaram for 'buck stops...' remark

Taking exception to Union Home Minister P.Chidamabaram's remark that the 'buck should stop at the chief minister's table' on checking inter-party clashes, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said it was not the 'language of politicians'.

Virtually asking Chidambaram to mind his own business, Bhattacharjee said: 'What is the situation in the country now? He should perform his own duty. I am carrying out my responsibilities.'

'I know the responsibility is mine no doubt, but the language is not good. It (buck) is slang. Such language is not used by politicians,' the chief minister told media persons at the state secretariat when asked for his response to Chidambaram's comment.

'Do you know poker? If you follow it, then you will understand. I never find such words in politicians' speeches,' he said.

During a visit to the state's Maoist-hit Lalgarh region Sunday, Chidambaram said he had asked Bhattacharjee to curb inter-party clashes in the state, as otherwise it would indicate a law and order problem.

His comment followed persistent accusations from the Trinamool Congress, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's second largest partner and the main opposition force in the state, regarding the law and order situation and alleged atrocities by cadres of West Bengal's ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

'Eventually the buck stops at the chief minister's table. It should not go beyond his table. If the buck goes beyond the chief minister's table, then that shows the failure of the state,' Chidambaram said.

Mahela dampens KKR hopes
Hindustan Times

Kolkata, April 4 -- The common perception about T20 is it's all about power. The bat must hit the ball hard. The paintbrush has no place, it's about machine guns. That was the story on Sunday during the first half of the Kolkata Knight Riders-Kings XI Punjab match. Chris Gayle rained sixes and plundered 65 runs in the last 20 balls he faced on way to a 42-ball 88. With the scarf hanging out from the back of his helmet, he indeed looked like a Black Cat commando using the bat as a bazooka. Due to Gayle's onslaught and the partnerships he shared with Sourav Ganguly and Manoj Tiwary, the Knight Riders galloped to 200, rattling up 131 runs in the last 10 overs. It looked enough against a troubled side, smarting under some fresh hammering. Few gave the Kings XI a chance when Mahela Jayawardene came out to open the innings. The second half was witness to the delicate sound of thunder. The ball was racing away to the fence and sailing over it off some sublime shots. Timing and placement was the hallmark of the effort rather than power and improvisation. Like Gayle's onslaught, Jayawardene's century also caused mass destruction. But unlike the West Indian, the Sri Lankan's knock was beautiful, not scary. Kings XI were always ahead of the asking rate, they made 204 in 18.2 overs and Jayawardene's hundred came off 56 balls. Kumar Sangakkara and Yuvraj Singh played cameos, but towering above their deeds was a work of art. It was rare in the days of slam-bang cricket.

When the world is going gaga over pyrotechnics, they had to bow to a man who practices Buddhism and believes in peaceful execution of plans.

Towns beat metros on worldwide web

The use of internet may be an urban phenomenon, but only 27 per cent of India's urban population admits to have accessed the medium at some point in time. The number of those accessing the worldwide web routinely is just a tiny fraction - 7 per cent - of the total urban population. And, if the numbers are rising fast, it is the smaller towns that are showing the way, with the likes of Kolhapur, Bellary, Thrissur and Panipat having more internet users than the top eight metros put together.

A largescale annual study on internet usage patterns across urban India, conducted by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), has revealed that of the 71 million "claimed" internet users in the country, 36 per cent, or around 26 million, are from towns with less than five lakh population.

On the other hand, the top eight metros - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad - account for 34 per cent, or 24 million, of the total Net users.

Cities with more than 10 lakh population, like Patna, Kochi, Baroda, Ludhiana, Coimbatore, Nagpur and Surat, house around 13 million internet users, says the study by IAMAI, the industry body that tracks internet and usage patterns in the country.

"Claimed" internet users are those who claim to have accessed the medium at least once at some point in time. "Active" users, pegged at 52 million, are those who access the medium at least once a month.

The smaller towns are also contributing to the growing population of computer-literates in the country. According to the study, 95 million people in urban India today have access to personal computers as compared to the 16 million in 2000.

"The PC penetration in the country, in fact, is driven by smaller towns and this is also leading to a decline in access of internet through cyber cafes, although they continue to dominate as the avenues of access for a majority of users," said Subho Ray, president, IAMAI.

The study was conducted across 31 cities in the country, among 19,000 households, 68,000 individuals, 1,000 small and medium enterprises and 500 cyber cafes. The data indicates trends till September 2009.

The report pegs the country's urban population above 12 years of age at 266 million, which means that only 27 per cent have accessed internet at least once in their lifetime, while only around 20 million people access the Web on a daily basis.

While admitting that internet penetration continues to be extremely low even in urban India, the study says it has consistently grown in the past decade. "From 5 per cent in 2000 to 36 per cent in 2009, internet is surely making an impact on the lives of people in smaller towns, who are using the online medium for connecting with people, socialising, entertainment and also, accessing news," said Ray.

In terms of demographics, school and college students in the age group of 8-25 years comprise the largest chunk - 44 per cent - of internet users, followed by men in the 21-35 years age group (28 per cent). Women form a very small part of the internet population in the country, with working and non-working women accounting for only 8 per cent and 7 per cent of the internet users' universe.

Cyber cafes continue to be the main source of accessing internet for 37 per cent users, followed by 30 per cent who access it from their offices and 23 per cent from homes. An interesting highlight of 2009 was the emergence of a segment (4 per cent) that uses mobile phones to access internet. "With the fast-growing smart phone market in India, mobile phones may emerge as a dominant source of accessing internet for users in the near future," said Ray.

While accessing e-mails continues to be the main purpose of going online for most users, music and video downloads and socialising through sites such as Facebook and Twitter are increasingly getting popular among netizens. Only 16 per cent of claimed users choose the online medium to access news.

The report further says that average internet usage in the country has gone up from 5.6 hours per week in 2001 to 15.7 hours per week in 2009.

Mirage-2000 upgrade deal by month-end: Official

After two years of negotiations, India and France are likely to finalise by month-end a deal to upgrade the Indian Air Force's Mirage-2000 fighter aircraft to enhance their combat capabilities and increase their service life, a defence ministry official said Monday.

'The deal is yet to be finalised,' the official told IANS.

'French officials were here for talks and would return this week to discuss it further. We expect it to be finalised by month-end,' the official added.

The deal for upgrading 50-odd aircraft is valued at between $1.5 billion and $2.2 billion and involves new avionics, as well as new weapons and senor suites, for the aircraft.

The first four to six Mirages will be upgraded in France and the balance in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under a transfer of technology pact.

India first inducted 40 Mirages in the mid-1980s and procured over 20 more in later years. The aircraft more than proved its worth during the 1999 Kargil war with Pakistan.

This will be second biggest deal with France after after the ongoing Rs.18,798 crore project to construct six Scorpene submarines at Mumbai's Mazagon Docks.

Meanwhile, according to a report in the French newspaper Le Monde, France has has decided to suspend a $1.6 billion contract for supplying electronics and missiles for the JF-7 Thunder fighter that has been jointly developed by China and Pakistan to ensure this does not impact on India-France strategic relations.

Nature''s trail opens at President''s Estate

Visitors to the Rashtrapati Bhawan can now enjoy a nature trail, a 1.75 km guided walk through a wilderness patch dotted with rich variety of flora and fauna. Unlike the Mughal Gardens, which is the one of the key attractions at the imposing Estate of the President, the new patch was a neglected piece of land located on the western side bordering the Mother Teresa Road.

The land caught the attention of President Pratibha Patil who wanted it to be developed as a trail where people can come and have a first hand experience of nature''s abode in the heart of capital. "The nature trail in the President''s Estate has been developed with a view to create awareness about best practices for conservation of the eco-heritage of the estate.

The visit is also an opportunity to understand nature from close quarters in an urban environment," Rashtrapati Bhawan spokesperson said today in a statement. People willing to explore this newly opened trail can come only in groups Saturday morning from eight to ten.

On entering the trail is a water body which has been recently developed to clean the untreated MCD water. After treatment, the water is supplied to the Mughal Gardens for irrigating it apart from being a flocking spot for birds.

The trail leads into several unexplored areas of the estate like the place where once bullock carts were parked. "Till about 13 years ago, the essentials for gardening like manure were transported in bullock carts which were parked at this building.

Now we are only using small tractors," said an official of the gardening department of the President''s Estate.

Spaceflight to probe how cells become diseased

Sydney, April 5 (IANS) A spaceflight will probe how cells remain healthy or succumb to disease, particularly in the face of stress or damage, in the first ever experiment of its kind.

On Monday, Arizona State University (ASU) Biodesign Institute researchers Cheryl Nickerson and her team, including Jennifer Barrila and Shameema Sarker, will see their latest experiment launched into low earth orbit aboard the space shuttle Discovery.

The goals of the team's research are to provide fundamental new insight into the infectious disease process, and further understanding of other progressive diseases, including immune disorders and cancer.

The knowledge gained from this work may eventually aid in the development of new treatments for infectious diseases, which remain a leading cause of human morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Results of the current study will also be used to help mitigate infectious disease risks to the crew, who are particularly vulnerable to infection, due to reduced immune function during spaceflight missions.

'The key to this research,' said Nickerson, a School of Life Sciences associate professor and researcher at Biodesign's Centre for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology, 'is the novel way that cells adapt and respond to the unique microgravity environment of spaceflight.'

This is the third time that Nickerson and her ASU team have flown their NASA-funded experiments aboard a space shuttle.

Their previous research on board Shuttles Atlantis and Endeavour were the first to show that spaceflight induces major changes in the gene expression and virulence of the food-born pathogen, Salmonella.

The current mission will be the first time that human cells will undergo infection by a pathogen in spaceflight, says a ASU Biodesign Institute release.

Results of this study will be analysed in a collaborative effort between Nickerson's lab and that of her co-investigator Mark Ott, researcher at NASA's Johnson Space Centre, and his graduate student, Sarah Castro.

Indian, US scientists question Big Bang theory

New Delhi, April 5 (IANS) An Indian and an American scientist have questioned the Big Bang theory, saying it does not serve as a viable explanation for the origin of the universe.

The research papers of Ashwini Kumar Lal of India's Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation and Rhawn Joseph of Northern California's Brain Research Laboratory have been accepted for publication in the April issue of the peer-reviewed Harvard journal, Journal of Cosmology.

The research papers come even as scientists at Geneva's European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) are in the midst of experiments on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) recreating conditions of the beginning of the universe.

'The two scientific papers cast shadows of suspicion over the efficacy of the Big Bang model. The scientific community may have to ponder afresh over the issue relating to the origin of the universe,' Lal told IANS here.

He also noted that CERN scientists 'are trying to jigsaw a theory which fits the conditions of the Big Bang model'.

'The Big Bang is said to have occurred 13.75 billion years. But there is evidence, as I have written in my paper, that there were fully formed distant galaxies that must have already been billions of years old at the time,' he added.

In his paper 'Big Bang? A Critical Review', Lal says: 'There is a growing body of evidence which demonstrates the Universe could not have begun with a Big Bang 13.75 billion years ago.

'Indeed, the day may come when it is determined there never was a Big Bang and cosmologists of the future will only gaze back in wonder at how anyone could have believed in a creation event which was refuted by so much contradictory evidence,' he adds.

According to the paper, one of the 'acid tests' relating to the validity of the Big Bang model is the 'detection of remnants of gravity waves from the earliest epoch of the universe.

'Existence of gravitational wave background, as predicted by Einstein in 1916 in his general theory of relativity, is expected from the violent early moments of the Big Bang much like the cosmic microwave background that fills the sky with radio waves from the early universe,' Lal says.

While the microwave background presumably originated 380,000 years after the Big Bang, the gravitational wave background purportedly comes directly from events in the first minute after the Big Bang, the scientist says.

'The cataclysmic Big Bang is believed to have created a flood of gravitational waves; ripples in the fabric of space-time. These gravitational waves should still fill the universe.

'However, presumably they are at a very feeble strength and cannot be detected by conventional astronomical tools. Nevertheless, they should carry information about the universe as it was in the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang.

'If these waves cannot be detected, this challenges the Big Bang,' Lal maintains.

He also points out that lots of metal has been detected in distant quasars and galaxies, 'and if distance is related to age, this means that many of the oldest, most distant galaxies are metal rich; and this defies the predictions of the Big Bang'.

This means there are 'fully formed distant galaxies that must have already been billions of years old over 13 billion years ago, which would make them older than the Big Bang', Lal contends.

Lal closely studied 38 research works in the areas of astrophysics, physics and cosmology before writing his paper. This is his third paper on the subject to be published in a foreign journal. The others are Origin of Life (Astrophysics and Space Science, October 2008) and Searching for Life on Habitable Planets and Moons (Journal of Cosmology, February 2010). He also has to his credit some 30 research papers published in Indian journals.

Pros and cons of the iPad

Washington, Apr 4 (ANI): After weeks of buildup, the iPad finally debuted Saturday in the US.

The sleek device went on sale at Apple stores around the US and at branches of the leading electronics chain Best Buy, as well as through Apple's website.

Long queues of consumers eager to be among the first to get their hands on the iPad waited for stores to open across the US, reports CBS News.

"Now, "Early Show" contributor and CNET Senior Editor Natali Del Conte, who says, "The things that does, that it promises to do, it does well," has come up with some of the pros and cons of the device.

Some of the important specs of the iPad

0.5 inch wide

1.5 pounds, which is thinner and lighter than any netbook on the market Same App Store and operating system as the iPhone and the iPod Touch

9.7-inch LED backlit display

178-degree viewing angle

Up to 10 hours of battery life

Uses your home Wi-Fi. A 3G version that will use AT and T's network will launch in a few weeks

499 dollars for the 16-gig model

599 dollars for the 32-gig model

699 dollars for the 64-gig model

Some of the drawbacks of the iPad

It doesn't multi-task.

It is a fingerprint magnet. For something so elegant, it sure does look pretty grimy after a few minutes of use.

It is heavier than you think it is. Using it as an e-book reader can be difficult if you are planning to hold it like a book for prolonged periods of time

Typing on the keyboard can be hard to get used to. You have to set it down to place your hands on the keyboard, which is awkward and odd. I don't think you'll be composing long e-mails on it.

It will not replace your notebook or phone. You won't be able to produce a lot on this. It is meant for you to consume media like music and video. Producing things like video, photo, or written text is not really the best experience.

It is expensive for something you're not sure you need yet. There is always the chance that Apple will lower the price in a few months like they did with the iPhone. There is also a very good chance that a camera will be installed in the next installation of the device so if video calling is important to you, you might want to wait.

It is not a high definition experience. High resolution but not HD.

You cannot annotate your books from the iTunes store so if you are reading a book you bought through Apple, you can't take notes on the book or mark passages like you can on the Kindle." (ANI)

BJP wrests Bangalore city corporation from Congress

The ruling BJP in Karnataka today captured the Bangalore city corporation for the first time, wresting the civic body from Congress in a fiercely contested polls held last week. Of the 198 wards in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) which went to polls on March 28, BJP captured 101, gaining clear majority.

The party is likely to further consolidate its position as results from 18 wards were awaited. Congress won 61 and JD-S 13 while independents got five.

In addition to 198 corporators, a total of 52 elected members -- MPs, MLAs and MLCs -- have voting rights in mayoral polls. BJP has 31 of these 52 members, including 17 MLAs in BBMP jurisdiction, the Congress has 10 MLAs and the JD-S one.

"We don''t need a better example than this, that if you do good work, development work, people will bless you", an elated Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa told reporters, adding the citizens have given a reply to those engaged in "criticism and commentary" on the functioning of BJP in the state. However, opposition Congress and JD-S said the ruling party always enjoyed advantage in local body elections.

Karnataka Congress Chief R V Deshpande said in such elections, legislators use influence and charged BJP with misusing power. Elections to BBMP were held for the first time after 100 wards were expanded to 198 by merging seven city municipal councils, one town municipal council and 111 villages.

Sania Mirza (Urdu: ثانیہ مرزا), born 15 November 1986,[1] is an Indian tennis player. She began her tennis career in 2003. In 2004 she was awarded the Arjuna award by the Indian Government. She is known for her powerful forehand ground strokes.

Early life

Mirza was born to Imran Mirza, a sports journalist and his wife Nasima in Mumbai, India. She was brought up in Hyderabad in a religious Muslim family.[2][3] Mirza began playing tennis at the age of six, turning professional in 2003. She was trained by her father and other family members. She attended Nasr school in Hyderabad and later graduated from St. Mary's College.[4][5]

Career

In April 2003, Mirza made her debut in the India Fed Cup team, winning all three singles matches. She also won the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls' Doubles title, teaming up with Alisa Kleybanova of Russia.

Mirza is the highest ranked female tennis player ever from India, with a career high ranking of 27 in singles and 18 in doubles. She is the first Indian woman to be seeded in a Grand Slam tennis tournament. She was the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2005 U.S. Open, defeating Mashona Washington, Maria Elena Camerin and Marion Bartoli. In winning, with Mahesh Bhupathi, the mixed doubles event at the 2009 Australian Open, she became the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam title.

In 2005, Mirza reached the third round of the Australian Open, losing to eventual champion Serena Williams. On 12 February 2005, she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title, defeating Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine in the Hyderabad Open Finals. As of September 2006, Mirza has notched up three top 10 wins; against Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova and Martina Hingis. At the 2006 Doha Asian Games, Mirza won the silver in the women's singles category and the gold in the mixed doubles partnering Leander Paes. She was also part of the Indian women's team that won the silver in the team event.

In 2006, Mirza was awarded a Padma Shri, India's fourth highest honor for her achievements as a tennis player.[6]

Mirza had had the best results of her career during the 2007 summer hardcourt season, finishing eighth in the 2007 U.S. Open Series standings. She reached the final of the Bank of the West Classic and won the doubles event with Shahar Pe'er, and reached the quarterfinals of the Tier 1 Acura Classic.

At the 2007 U.S. Open, she reached the third round before losing to Anna Chakvetadze for the third time in recent weeks. She fared much better in the doubles, reaching the quarterfinals in mixed with her partner Mahesh Bhupathi and the quarterfinals in the women's doubles with Bethanie Mattek, including a win over number two seeds Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur.

Mirza received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the MGR Educational and Research Institute University in Chennai on 2008-12-11.[7] Her niece, Sonia Baig Mirza, studies there.

2008

Mirza reached the quarter-finals at Hobart as No. 6 seed. She lost to Flavia Pennetta in three sets. She reached the third round at the Australian Open as No.31 seed, where she lost to No.8 seed Venus Williams 7-6(0) 6-4, having led 5-3 in the first set. She was runner-up in the Australian Open mixed doubles partnering Mahesh Bhupathi. Sun Tiantian and Nenad Zimonjić) won the final 7–6(4), 6–4.

She withdrew from Pattaya City because of a left adductor strain.

Mirza reached the 4r at Indian Wells as No.21 seed, defeating No.9 seed Shahar Pe'er en route, but lost to No.5 seed Daniela Hantuchová.

At the 2008 Wimbledon Championships, as No.32 seed, Mirza was defeated by qualifier Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 6-0, 4-6, 9-7, having had several match points.

Mirza was eliminated in the first round of the 2008 Beijing Olympics when she retired in her match against Iveta Benešová because of a right wrist injury. Throughout 2008, Mirza was plagued by a slew of wrist injuries, requiring her to withdraw from several matches and the Roland Garros and US Open Grand Slams.

2009

Mirza picked up her first Grand Slam title at the 2009 Australian Open. Partnered with Mahesh Bhupathi, she won the mixed doubles title beating Nathalie Dechy (France) and Andy Ram (Israel) 6-3, 6-1 in the final in Melbourne. She then entered the Pattaya Women's Open Tournament in Bangkok where she reached the finals after a string of good performances. She lost the finals to Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-1. She made the semis in doubles in the same tournament.

Mirza then competed in the BNP Paribas Open where she lost in the second round to Flavia Pennetta. She then participated in the Miami Masters and lost to Mathilde Johansson of France in the first round. Mirza and her doubles partner Chia-jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei made the semifinals of the doubles event. Mirza lost in the first round of the MPS Group Championships but won the doubles title with Chuang. She lost in the first round at Roland Garros, losing to Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva. She also lost in the second round of the doubles (with Chuang) and mixed doubles (with Mahesh Bhupathi). She participated in the 2009 AEGON Classic and reached the semifinals, losing to Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 3-6,6-0,6-3, who eventually won the title.

Mirza defeated Anna-Lena Gronefeld in the first round of the 2009 Wimbledon Championships. She then fell to #28 Sorana Cirstea in the second round. She competed in and won the Lexington Challenger event, defeating top seed Julie Coin of France in the final. She also reached the final of the ITF event in Vancouver but lost to Stephanie Dubois of Canada. Playing in the U.S Open, she defeated Olga Govortsova in the first round but lost 6-0, 6-0 to 10th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy. She also lost in the second round of the doubles event (partnering Francesca Schiavone) to Shahar Peer and Gisela Dulko.

Mirza successfully qualified for the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo but lost in the first round to Zheng Jie. Mirza won the first set but could not hold the lead, eventually losing to the Chinese player 7-5, 2-6, 3-6.

At Osaka, Mirza won her first round match against 5th seed Shahar Peer 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Mirza then defeated Viktoriya Kutuzova 6-4, 6-3 and in the quarterfinal she defeated 2nd seed Marion Bartoli 6-4, 2-0 by retirement. Bartoli conceded her match and Mirza moved on to the semifinal to meet 4th seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

Controversy

The short tennis clothes she has to wear in the court has drawn criticism from some Muslim religious groups, with Mirza being a practising Muslim who prays five times a day, and fasts during Ramzan.[3] According to one report published 8 September 2005, an unnamed Muslim scholar had issued a ruling, saying that women's tennis attire is not suited to Islam.[8] Jamiat-ulema-e-Hind rejected rumors about disrupting her game saying that they do not stop anyone from playing, although they found female tennis players' dress code objectionable. Nevertheless, Calcutta police tightened security measures to protect her.[9]

After Mirza spoke at a conference on safe sex in November 2005, some groups said she was detached from Islam and that she was a "corrupting influence on the youth." Mirza clarified her stance by saying that she was opposed to pre-marital sex.[10]

In 2006, some newspapers reported that Mirza declined from playing with an Israeli tennis player Shahar Pe'er for fear of protests from India's Muslim community.[10] However, when she teamed up with Pe'er for the 2007 WTA Tour of Stanford, California, there was no reaction.

Mirza was pictured resting her feet and showing her bare soles as she watched compatriot Rohan Bopanna play in the 2008 Hopman Cup, with an Indian flag in front.[11] She faced possible prosecution under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act after a private citizen complained. Mirza protested, "I love my country, I wouldn't be playing Hopman Cup otherwise."

On 4 February 2008, Mirza said that she would stop appearing in tennis tournaments held in India, starting with the 2008 Bangalore Open the following month, citing the series of controversies and upon advice by her manager.[12]

Personal life

Mirza was engaged in July 2009 to Sohrab Mirza, a business man from Hyderabad whom she knew since childhood.[13][14][15]

On 28 January 2010, it was announced that the Mirza family had called off the engagement. The decision was reported to be mutual, with Mirza citing "incompatibility" as the reason for the split. Mirza's father claimed that the couple as well as their respective families continue to remain on good terms.[16][17][18]

On 29 March 2010, Pakistani media reported that Mirza will marry Shoaib Malik, ex-captain of the Pakistan cricket team in April 2010. This news was confirmed to the media by her father.[19] Later, Shoaib Malik also confirmed on his Twitter page that they will get married in April 2010.[20]
