57 matches, 171 hours of cricket on the field. Off the field: 54 parties, 270 hours of partying and close to 1,29,600 bottles of beer consumed.
The past two months have been one big party as the third season of the Indian Premier League took the country by storm. Models, cricketers and celebrities burnt the floor till 4 am every day. And the ongoing political controversy is not going to stop the party.
An organiser, who asked not to be named, told HT City, "The parties will happen, of course, there has been no problem with the parties." This puts paid to talk that the income tax scrutiny has meant a cancellation of parties, including the much awaited IPL Awards night to be hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar and superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
"What have cricket and the players' achievements on the field got to do with this controversy? We are trying to award the achievements of the players. The Awards ceremony will happen tonight," said Mohomed Morani, of Cineyug, the event organisers. Johar too, at a recent press conference, confirmed the news, saying, "I will be hosting the awards."
As the parties go on, HT City takes a closer look at the number game of the party scene. "There were about 500 people at every party and close to 15 security personnel. On nights when Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta or Shilpa Shetty were in attendance of course, it was much more," says Mehr Rampal, the organiser of the post-IPL fashion parties.
"At the post-IPL fashion show 16 models showcased 32 garments every night," says Nayanika Chatterjee, who choreographed the shows. Accordingly, over 1,728 garments by 58 designers were showcased. According to sources there were close to eight varieties of dishes at each party and over all close 1,29,600 bottles of beer and 27,000 bottles of whiskey were consumed; 9,450 songs played at post match parties 27,000 bottles of whisky consumed, 432 dishes served in the buffet spreads, 1,728 garments displayed at 54 fashion galas 39.7444 kms covered by models on the ramp and 810 security personnel on duty.
A meeting of the Congress Core Group headed by Gandhi is likely to take stock of the situation following the row involving Indian Premier League which has seen the exit of Shashi Tharoor from Union Ministry and allegations of involvement of two other Ministers.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in Lok Sabha, "It (a decision on JPC) is to be taken after due diligence and consideration. It cannot be like instant coffee or instant consideration".
Observing that the government will have to ponder over the demand, Mukherjee, who is also the Leader of the Lok Sabha, said, "I will communicate your sentiments to the Prime Minister. As and when the government takes a decision, we will come to Parliament. Let us wait for some time."
The thrust of the Malabar CY 10 exercise this year would be on Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Surface Firings, Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO), Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) and Submarine Operations.
Malabar CY 10, conducted from April 23 to May 2, is the fourteenth series of the Malabar round of exercise. The US Navy's frontline units of 7th fleet and Indian Navy's Western Fleet are participating in the exercise.
The scope of Malabar exercise includes diverse range of operational activities at sea. During Malabar CY 10, the US Navy will be represented by ships from CTF 70 of the USN 7th Fleet which is based at Yokosuka, Japan.
The CTF will include the Cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67), Destroyers USS Chaffee (DDG 90), USS Lassen (DDG 82) and Frigate USS Curts (FFG 38). In addition, one Los Angeles class nuclear powered submarine, USS Annapolis (SSN 760), two P3C Orion aircraft and a 28-member US Navy Special Forces team will also participate in the exercise.
INS Mysore, an indigenous Delhi Class guided missile destroyer and three guided missile frigates, INS Godavari, INS Brahmaputra and INS Tabar, will represent the Indian Navy. In addition, one Shishumar class submarine, INS Shankush, Sea Harrier fighters, other fixed and rotary wing aircraft are also scheduled to participate in the bilateral exercise.
"Naval cooperation between India and the US epitomises the long-term strategic relationship between both countries. Both navies have, over the years, undertaken diverse bilateral activities such as training exchanges, information exchange, and technical cooperation.
"Our nations have significant convergence of interests, especially in the maintenance of maritime security," said a statement released by the Indian Navy.
The annual Malabar series of exercises commenced in 1992. Thirteen such exercises have been held so far.
"The debate on what should take place first - development or police action - is misplaced," Chidambaram said, addressing the consultative committee of the home ministry that discussed Maoist extremism in mineral rich central India.
Taking a swipe at his critics, Congress colleague Digvijay Singh included, the home minister said the decision on launching development activities in Maoist-affected areas and the security operation would vary from situation to situation.
"No fixed prescription is possible. In some areas, it may be possible to undertake some developmental activities, to be followed immediately by steps to strengthen security. In other areas, it may be necessary to first launch police action to regain control of the territory, followed by vigorous developmental activities," Chidambaram said.
Digvijay Singh had last week questioned the home minister's anti-Maoist policy and accused him of "intellectual arrogance". The Congress leader, in a newspaper article, asked the home minister to stop treating Maoism as a law and order issue as the problem could not be solved "by ignoring the hopes and aspirations of the people living in these areas".
In Friday's meeting, the home minister drew attention to the anti-development activities of Maoists.
"They have been destroying school buildings, roads, telephone towers etc. because development will wean away poor tribals from their grip," he said.
"In 2009 alone, they have destroyed 71 school buildings, the re-building of which may take years, depriving tribal children of education."
Taking a dig at state governments, the home minister said the central government was giving huge amounts of money for development in the 34 worst-affected districts.
"However, utilization of the money is not always satisfactory," he said, calling for "full and proper utilization of the funds, provided by the centre for development of the Naxal-affected areas".
Members of the committee supported the government's two-pronged policy to deal with the Maoist insurgency. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has repeatedly described Maoist insurgency as "the gravest threat" to India.
The panel included MPs like Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, Congress' K. Keshava Rao and Rishang Keishing, Nationalist Congress Party's Thomas Sangma, Bharatiya Janata Party's Vinay Katiyar and Yogi Adityanath and nominated Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Sekhar Ganguly among others.
IPL Scam or IPL Gate: Probe reveals sex angle in Indian Prostitution League?
Money Laundering, match fixing, betting, illegal gratification, bribery, fraud, forgery, it has it all. Then how can sex be far behind. According to a highly confidential income tax source, several high-class known (within Bollywood circles) call girls who call themselves actresses or models and C-grade actresses and models were allegedly hired or enlisted by a certain personality and his cronies – now under investigation by a myriad of agencies – within the IPL to provide sexual gratification to clients, sponsors, benefactors and patrons.
While we have the names of the so-called cheer-leaders or actresses who added the glamour component to the IPL parties, we will refrain from mentioning them and wait for the Income Tax department to spell it out. CNN IBN, Headlines Today and Times Now reported on Thursday that the IT department is investigating and looking into the monies paid to cheer leaders and others who added the glam component. The IT sleuths want to know who hired them, who paid them and how much was paid to them and for what kind of services. It has also come out that many of them were paid huge amounts in cash – something that a body like the IPL should have never done.
According to Flynn Remedios, author of the yet-to-be published IPLgate – the mother of all Indian cricket scams, Apparently, it transpires that certain "cheer leaders" and glam dolls or sex dolls were paid far more than what any one would have paid a cheer leader. What the IT is now trying to find out is what other services were provided by the so-called cheer leaders and glam dolls for the exorbitant payments doled out to them by a very generous IPL. Or did the glam dolls substantially hike up the financial valuations of the IPL and its teams and how did they? Will somebody please tell the poor Indian cricket enthusiast?

'Will give up sex, jobs for WC win'
Singapore An overwhelming majority of 51 percent of soccer fans hailing from countries participating in the upcoming football World Cup and residing in North America are ready to starve themselves for a week to see their respective nations win the coveted title, a survey has revealed.
According to the survey conducted by US-based firm VIP Communications Inc., more than 40 per cent of the 20,000 people who participated in the poll, were ready to give up dating for a year, while seven per cent said they would give up their job to see their country win the World Cup in South Africa.
It also found that a whopping 93 percent of English fans had no qualms over giving up eating food for a week to see England lift the World Cup starting June 11, while 70 percent of Italians were ready to resign from their jobs if their team supersedes the 32 other participating teams in the month long tournament.
While most Americans appeared ready to give up their homes, majority of South Koreans preferred a World Cup win to their love lives, The Dawn reports.
However, Slovakians were the least interested in the fate of their national squad, as only three percent said were ready to sacrifice any of the things to see their side's triumph.

Lawmakers belonging to opposition parties sought on Friday a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into alleged financial irregularities in the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament!
Pawar, Patel in line of fire, BJP demands their resignation! Ironically Narendra Modi, Vasundhara Raje and Arun Jetly are the few names Belonging to the Hindutva Resurgence are NO Less Involved! No body asks ACTION against them! Why, just the weather is too Hot as Summer is in, pushing up temperatures all over the country. Coconut water, beaches, impromptu showers and innovative head gear find themselves in the 'most popular' list!India 's monsoon rains from June to September are key for the country's farm output and help shape government policies on import and export of farm commodities.Hungry Money Machine waits for Economic Ethnic Cleansing to get momentum as IPL lost the Grip on Vital and sensitive Turns and Easy Money Making has suddenly become so Politically Risky in the IPL Ways!
Relief from the Heatstrom as expected Despite what he had promised, Lalit Modi has decided not to go to court to stop the meeting where he's to be asked to quit as Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL)!The Indian Premier League (IPL) has clarified that the documents emailed to Shashi Tharoor were not confidential and that anybody who wanted to bid on an IPL team at last month's auction could have asked for these spreadsheets.
Sunanda Pushkar, who was at the centre of the IPL Kochi controversy that led to Shashi Tharoor's exit from government, says the media just turned her into a 'slut', some kind of 'brainless eye candy'.
Dubbing as a "medieval witch hunt" the media scrutiny on her after the controversy raged, Sunanda said, "I have always been proud that I have made it alone--on my own terms--in a man's world.
And here, in one minute, without bothering to find out any facts the media just turned me into a slut, into some kind of brainless eye candy! I don't know why people find it so hard to understand this."
The 48-year old marketing professional said she met Tharoor two years back but had developed "closeness" in the past five months only.
"We are certainly close now, but that closeness only developed less than five months ago. I am very proud to know him because, most of all, he is a good and honest man," Sunanda said in an interview to Tehelka magazine. She met Tharoor two years ago through a common friend.
Sunanda came into public spotlight when IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi tweeted revealing her stake in IPL Kochi and questioned the merit on which she was given sweat equity worth Rs 70 crore in the new franchisee.
Modi had also alleged that Tharoor had asked him not to reveal the names of the team franchisee.
While the controversy led to Tharoor's exit as Minister of State for External Affairs, Sunanda, who is based in Dubai, returned her sweat equity.
Claiming that Tharoor has been "hounded out, for now - ironically - for not being dirty enough", Sunanda suggested that he was comparable to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi and said these three men gave hope to millions of Indians across the world that even clean men can join politics.
Denying that she was a proxy for Tharoor, she said "Can't I make my own money? He has not been corrupt for so many years -for which I am proud to be his friend- why would he be corrupt now? Just look around you in India and see the corruption- in government, in industry, in every crevice of public life and they call this corruption!".

Amid increasing attack on Lalit Modi, a member of the IPL Governing Council on Friday gave enough hints to its Commissioner that he should quit.
"Wisdom should prevail upon him," said Rajiv Shukla, also BCCI vice president, when asked whether Mr. Modi should quit as IPL Commissioner.
Mr. Shukla, who briefed Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the ongoing IPL controversy earlier in the day, asserted that the Governing Council will meet on April 26 as scheduled.
Mr. Modi's fate hangs in balance as the Governing Council is expected to discuss the IPL controversy amid allegations that "betting and money-laundering" had taken place.
The meeting will be deliberating and analysing the details of all IPL franchisees.
However, there are reports that Mr. Modi may boycott the meeting.
Earlier, Mr. Shukla, a Congress MP, had called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a few times earlier this week on the same issue.
As BCCI vice-president, Mr. Shukla has been involved in close-door discussions with the cricketing body's president Shashank Manohar and vice-president Arun Jaitley on the fate of IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi and controversies surrounding ownership of various T20 teams.
IPL Nights: curtain lifts on mingling set
OUR BUREAU | |
April 22: If big boys played at night three decades ago, the players have grown bigger and the nights naughtier in the age of IPL. What happens at IPL Nights, the after-match parties organised at the team hotels and drawing criticism in the wake of the scandals surrounding the blockbuster game? The Telegraph has pieced together an account, based on descriptions by some of those who attended these parties and what the paper's reporters saw first-hand in Calcutta. Seven of the 55 parties took place in Calcutta, on all the Kolkata Knight Riders's home match days, at ITC, The Sonar. The event had two parts — a short fashion show at Pala, the hotel banquet, and then the party at Dublin, the nightclub. Once the 10-minute fashion show got over and the photographers were coaxed out, the real action started at Pala and then moved on to Dublin. The term in vogue was "mingling". On one side, "mingling" involved cricketers, support staff and other members of the team entourage. On the other were foreign cheerleaders, models from other metros and some city girls who would otherwise be seen lingering at Calcutta nightclubs. Their calling cards? Little black dresses and backless numbers. A city businessman said: "Some of these girls made huge amounts of money, going up to lakhs, every night." Not that the cricketers were poor victims. "We got a lot of support from the players during the IPL Nights…. They seemed to have enjoyed these parties quite a bit," said Mehr Jessia Rampal, the former model who "officially" organised the parties with her husband and actor Arjun Rampal. Those who were witness to the wild parties, which went on till the late hours of the morning, have many a story to tell. About a fast bowler from Down Under. About a struggling Indian six-hitter. About the Caribbean big man. Mostly the ones who failed on the field. Some of the city's party regulars also attended these events. To make the cut, you had to either be holding the Rs 32,000 super hospitality ticket or be on the guest list of the fashion designer who was showcasing collections on that particular night or on the list of IMG, the event management company. IMG said its role was limited to "helping out in guest list management" at the check-in gate. While the parties were hosted under the umbrella of the IPL, Arjun and Mehr chose everything from the décor design to the designers. They were paid fees estimated between Rs 15 crore and Rs 24 crore for the 55-party assignment. "I feel that a Rs 24-crore budget is too much to allocate to night parties. It's too much money especially when you are not even promoting anything," said Shaina NC, a fashion designer associated with the BJP. The Rampals are family friends of Shah Rukh Khan and the couple had been accompanying SRK to cheer KKR at home and away games right from IPL 1 in 2008. During IPL Nights, the only time King Khan made an appearance on the fashion ramp was when Mehr dragged him from the back row. "The after-match party was my concept because I felt that lifestyle was an important aspect of the IPL," Mehr said. Was Lalit Modi involved? "The whole IPL team made it possible…. It is very easy to think of something so huge but to get the backing is something." Husband Arjun echoed the sentiments and added: "IPL Nights is a natural extension of brand IPL. It is a great way to end things in a nice way." But at least one fashion designer said no payment was made. Unlike the models walking the ramp, who signed contracts with the Rampals' company Chasing Ganesha, and were paid, the designers just exchanged a letter of confirmation. So why did designers like Manish Malhotra and Anamika Khanna agree to show their collections? The reasons varied from Shah Rukh on the front row to friendship with Mehr to just the thrill of being part of the game-meets-glamour platform. "Initially, I thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase my designs at such a celeb gathering but then I realised that the fashion show was just an excuse for the party which was the main focus," said a city designer. "We all got a real bad deal." Govt lost Rs 586 cr in 2008-09 in indirect taxes: CAGOfficial auditor CAG on Friday said the government has lost Rs 586 crore in excise and custom duties and service tax in financial year 2009-09 due to non-levy of tax and other reasons.According to the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report tabled on Friday in Parliament, there was a revenue loss of Rs 375.6 crore in service tax, Rs 156.8 crore in excise duty and Rs 54 crore in customs, translating into a total loss of Rs 586.48 crore for the exchequer in indirect taxes. This figure is significantly lower than the revenue loss of Rs 9,645 crore identified by the CAG on account of short levy of direct taxes during the same year. In the service tax segment, the loss on account of non-levy of tax was Rs 328 crore, in addition to exemptions to the tune of Rs 24.9 crore, which were given in violation of notifications. In the excise duty space, there was a short levy of Rs 80.4 crore due to incorrect grant of various exemptions. The other reasons for revenue loss included undervaluation of excisable goods and non-levy of cess, interest and penalty. In the customs segment, there was a revenue loss of Rs 24.3 crore due to duty exemptions provided to exporters and importers without fulfilment of the prescribed conditions. Incorrect assessment of customs duty and misclassification of goods also contributed to the loss. In a shocking revealation, a Delhi based magazine has revealed that the UPA government at the Centre was indulged in tapping the phones of senior political leaders including its own and gaining information on issues ranging from the IPL to the India-US nuclear deal.Zeenews reported today. On the other hand,NCP chief Sharad Pawar was on Friday unfazed by allegations against his family and party leader Praful Patel in the IPL issue, saying he was not worried as they had nothing to do with it.
Pawar Power was also unperturbed by the demands for Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe.
"Why should we worry? We have nothing to do," the Union agriculture minister shot back when asked whether he was concerned that media reports were naming his party and some leaders as beneficiaries in the IPL issue.
When pointed out that Opposition parties were demanding JPC probe, he said, "Let them do whatever they want to do."
His comments came amid allegations that Pawar's family had been beneficiaries in the IPL and there was "gross misuse of power" by Patel in it, a charge denied by the party which is a partner in the Congress-led coalition at the Centre and in Maharashtra.
Winds of change await IPL State units to run matches
LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI | |
April 22: Expect changes with a change at the top in the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to key sources of The Telegraph, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) intends moving towards "empowering" the state associations concerned to "fully conduct" IPL matches. Then, and this will hurt the swish set, the BCCI wants to do away with the after-match parties, which have come in for criticism from many quarters. "The BCCI has already played a big role in the successful hosting of two World Cups (1987, 1996) and is about to jointly stage another (2011).… Aren't our affiliates capable of hosting a handful of T20 matches?" asked one key source. Right now, the IPL is managed by the International Management Group (IMG), which gets a hefty fee (Rs 27 crore this season) from the BCCI. The staging associations are given Rs 50 lakh for every match. Another key source said: "The after-match parties don't have to be a part of the IPL package and should be delinked.… The feedback hasn't all been favourable and we don't want the tournament, an excellent property, to get a bad name because of the behaviour of a few who're out largely to seek cheap publicity.…" The changes will, of course, be effective from the post-Lalit Modi era. Even as government agencies are turning up the heat on the IPL chairman and commissioner, the BCCI is in overdrive for Monday. That, indeed, has become the most important day as the IPL's governing council meeting is scheduled that morning. If the embattled Modi does stay away, on the ground that it's "unauthorised", the members will elect the chairman for that meeting. Indications are that the no-nonsense BCCI president, Shashank Manohar, would be given that responsibility. Unless Modi steps down, it's expected that the governing council will move a motion of no-confidence against him. That will be communicated to the BCCI's working committee and, on ratification, a special general meeting called. At that stage, a three-fourths majority will be required to end Modi's controversial innings. If anything, his position looks to be getting weaker by the day. Manohar wasn't available for a confirmation, but one learns that the franchises are going to be told that they have no business handing out certificates to Modi. Royal Challengers Bangalore owner Vijay Mallya and Shilpa Shetty, co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals, have gone on TV to praise the under-acute-fire IPL chairman and commissioner. "Modi's quite good at this game.... He'd been up to tricks even when the BCCI had a problem with IMG over their fees.… Trying to create pressure through the media just isn't going to help him," one of the key sources pointed out. Because of the mess, nobody is going on record, but the talk is that Modi would invariably present the governing council with a fait accompli. Specifically, he'd enter into contracts and, then, move the governing council (which has 13 other members) for "ratification". Apparently, some governing council members would get "intimidated". Whatever, in a remarkably candid interview in New Delhi, former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, one of three cricketers on the governing council, admitted it had been a "failure". "We should have been more aware of what was happening. We should have been doing the questioning, but we didn't, because everything seemed okay. We were all carried away by how well he (Modi) was doing," Pataudi said. Asked if Modi should put in his papers, Pataudi replied: "Yes, I think so.…" Significantly, it's understood that the BCCI isn't initiating an internal probe into Modi's deals — at least, not yet — as there are "international ramifications" and it lacks the "instruments" to investigate. The BCCI, therefore, is waiting for the government to complete its inquiries. |

On the other hand,Government on Friday said it will continue to follow its two-pronged approach of development and well-planned police action to check Naxal menace but pointed out that Central funds meant for projects for betterment of such regions were not being well used.
"Government will continue to follow its two-pronged approach of development and calibrated police action to deal with the Naxal problem," said Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram during a meeting of the Consultative Committee of Ministry of Home Affairs here on Friday.
This was the first time the Committee met after the Naxal ambush that claimed lives of 76 securitymen in Dantewada in Chhattisgarh earlier this month.
"The decision will vary from situation to situation and from state to state and no fixed prescription is possible. In some areas, it may be possible to undertake some developmental activities, to be followed immediately by steps to strengthen security.
"In other areas, it may be necessary to first launch police action to regain control of the territory, followed by vigorous developmental activities," the Minister said.
The subject of the meeting was 'Left Wing Extremism.'
Drawing attention to anti-development activities of Naxalites, Mr. Chidambaram said they have been destroying school buildings, roads and telephone towers among others because development will wean away poor tribals from the grip of the ultras.
He pointed out in 2009 alone, Naxals destroyed 71 school buildings, the re-building of which may take years, depriving tribal children of education.
Mr. Chidambaram said huge amount of money is being given to state governments for bringing about development in the 34 worst-affected Naxal districts under various programmes.
Expressing dissatisfaction over proper utilisation of money, he called for proper utilisation of the funds provided by the Centre for development of the Naxal-affected areas.
Taking part in the discussions, the Committee members supported the government's two-pronged policy and suggested a visit by an all-party Parliamentary delegation to the Naxal-affected areas to win the trust and goodwill of tribal people, an MHA statement said.
They also pointed out the need for good coordination between local police and Central paramilitary forces and availability of actionable intelligence at the ground level.
The discussions remained inconclusive and another meeting of the Consultative Committee would be held soon to continue discussions on the same subject, to enable more members to participate, the statement read.
The Committee members comprise MP's from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
The Outlook magazine, in its upcoming issue, claims to have got authentic information from highly placed sources that the government was tapping NCP supreme Sharad Pawar's phone when he was talking to IPL chief Lalit Modi.
He was purportedly discussing a deal with Modi, the report says.
The phone of CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat was also being tapped in June 2008 when the India-US nuclear deal was being discussed in Parliament. Karat led the charge of Opposition against the deal.
The report goes on to reveal the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was also in the line of leak when he visited Delhi in October 2007.
He was heard discussing central funds for the Kochi river project with a colleague.
Shockingly, Congress leader Digvijay Singh was also on the radar. His phone was tapped in February 2007. He was discussing poll candidates with a Punjab Congress leader for Congress Working Committee election.
Reacting to the expose, CPI's D Raja condemned the tapping and said it seemed as if 'we were living under a military regime.'
"It is not the question of just Karat. We are a democracy, why is such a thing done at all,?" he asked when contacted by a TV channel.
BJP's Nirmala Sitaraman took the opportunity to declare that the incident showed how the Congress was returning to its old Emergency days.
"I am not shocked…the fascist tendencies of the Congress are slowly coming back," she said.
The issue, if true, could turn into a massive embarrassment for the Government and will provide fresh ammunition to the Opposition which has already caused much furore against the UPA over IPL, price rise and other issues in the on-going Budget session of the Parliament.
CPI-ML calls nation-wide strike on Apr 27
CPI (ML) Liberation will observe a nation-wide strike on April 27, coinciding with the bandh call by Left parties to protest against UPA government's "failure" to control escalating prices and ensure food security for the poor.
"We have decided to call a separate nation-wide general strike on April 27 on these issues," party general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya told reporters here.
The working class and the poor are reeling due to unabated rising prices of food and essential commodities and the Congress-led UPA government failed to protect the poor from the impact, he alleged.
Bhattacharya also castigated the Centre for its alleged move to privatise public sector enterprises, includng banking, telecom, insurance, transport, Railways and health.
CPI-ML, he said, would hold a farmers' rally here on May 10 to press for the just rights of peasants and sharecroppers.
Two weeks after setting in motion a sequence of events that led to the resignation of Shashi Tharoor from government, Lalit Modi found himself in the trenches facing hostile fire on two fronts — from official investigators probing allegations of financial impropriety and fellow cricket administrators keen to oust him from his job as Indian Premier League Commissioner.
Investigations widened
On Thursday, Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate officials in Mumbai questioned Mr. Modi for several hours on his five-star hotel office-cum-residential premises. Elsewhere across India, the ambit of investigations into the IPL was expanded to cover franchisees, sponsors, broadcasters, event managers and all other companies associated with the T-20 extravaganza.
Mr. Modi, who has questioned the right of the Board of Control for Cricket in India to convene the IPL governing council without his consent, was also reportedly considering whether to seek a legal injunction against the meeting now set for April 26.
In the first government statement on the matter since the IT department-led fishing expedition began two days ago, Sports Minister M.S. Gill told the Rajya Sabha that the IPL's affairs were being looked into carefully and in great detail.
On his part, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said everyone would come to know when the process was complete. "I cannot comment on investigations by the Income Tax department.''
Among the companies where taxmen came calling were the Sahara Group in Lucknow, which recently won the IPL Pune franchise, and the infrastructure and power firm, GMR, which owns Delhi Daredevils.
I-T officials also concluded their search of the Kolkata Knight Riders office in Kolkata, claiming they had uncovered "documents'' relating to IPL dealings. The papers pertaining to the MoU between KKR and the Cricket Association of Bengal were reportedly missing. In Mumbai, the office of Red Chillies Entertainment, owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, was also searched.
"Our effort is to track any illegal money and uncover the murky financial dealings done in IPL under the garb of promoting cricket," a senior tax official told The Hindu.
"We are not aiming to kill the enterprise of IPL but are definitely concerned about the involvement of slush money and the tax evasion angle,'' he said.
Manmohan Singh Govt. taps phone of top political leaders
UPA Govt. tapped phones of top political luminaries cutting across parties.
Outlook magzine said in its latest issue that it inlcuded Union agricultural minister Sharad Pawar, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat. Surprisingly Congress' own senior leader Digvijay Singh, former CM of MP and former Unuon Minister, aslo figures in the list of those whose phones were tapped.
Further details are awaited.
In a related controversy, according to some TV news channels, I-T investigations have revealed Lalit Modi has interests in three teams. The report goes on to name Samir Thakral as front for Lalit Modi whose phone records show conversations with bookies.

CSK owners cleared
Chennai Special Correspondent reports:
The owners of Chennai Super Kings, India Cements Ltd., have been cleared by I-T officials after the completion of a survey in connection with the IPL.
On Wednesday, about 20 I-T officials carried out document-based investigation on the premises of India Cements. Director-General of Income-Tax (Investigation) P.K. Sarangi told The Hindu: "They have shown us all the documents. We have not found any suspicious transactions. We do not have any adverse information about their transactions. We have completed our survey.
IPL telecast rights-related funds not used unlawfully: WSG
Rejecting allegations of impropriety about its transactions related to the Indian Premier League, World Sports Group (WSG) today said it has not used funds received in connection with the IPL broadcast rights for "inappropriate or unlawful activities."
The Income Tax department, investigating alleged irregular transactions in the IPL, is also looking into payment of $80 million-facilitation fee to WSG by Multi-Screen Media (MSM) for T20 league's telecast rights.
WSG has denied that "any executive or employee has received or admitted to receiving any monies other than in the normal course of business."
In a statement, the company also rejected allegations that it used any funds received in connection with its sub-licence of broadcast rights for inappropriate or unlawful activities.
Further, WSG noted that it totally rejects unsubstantiated comments and innuendos about its business transactions and categorically states that they are unfounded and without substance.
Yesterday, an IT department official had said that the department has got "convincing evidence of a facilitation fee of around USD 80 million paid by MSM to WSG."
A portion of the facilitation fee was understood to have been paid by MSM to an offshore company of WSG in Mauritius, a tax haven, without paying income tax on the transaction in India.
According to the statement, WSG has fully cooperated with the IT and would continue to do so.
"WSG has completed a round of meetings with officials and provided relevant documents. These show that the terms of the contracts between WSG and MSM are fully and properly detailed and demonstrate agreements reached in the normal course of business," it added.
Moreover, WSG said it would be having another round of meetings with the income tax authorities to provide further clarifications.

IMD predicts near-normal rains
The country will receive normal rainfall this season, the weather office announced today much to the relief of millions of farmers who had to face the brunt of a drought last year.
Rainfall during the June-September south-west monsoon season is expected to be 98 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
LPA of southwest monsoon rainfall averaged over the country as a whole is 89 cm. It is the mean of rainfall between 1941 and 1990.
The forecast has a model error of five per cent. The forecast for better rains this seasons comes after India witnessed one of the worst droughts in recent times when the monsoon had failed last year.
A normal monsoon is necessary to power the Indian economy as over 235 million people depend on agriculture for livelihood.
Last month, Geneva-based World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said El Nino had peaked, but was expected to influence climate patterns up to mid-year before dying out.
El Nino, a key parameter in monsoon prediction, is an occasional seasonal warming of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean that upsets normal weather patterns from the western seaboard of Latin America to East Africa.
