Friends

While globally, reduction of carbon emission is being demanded as never before, locally, the sponge iron units spewing carbon all over, thereby devastating local communities in particular, and environment in general are being given state sponsored patronage in an unprecedented scale.

The environment related Boards and Departments, bending and bypassing the legal provisions, are making a mockery of the standards of carbon emission control and prevention of environmental degradation. Even while the Court is being taken for a ride, the law is being broken with impunity.

In this regard need for collective action, involving environmental activists, peoples' science activists, social activists, civil society representatives along with the victims, has been felt.

It is a question of defending the rights to water, forest, land and livelihood.

Accordingly a day-long sit-in-demonstration on the service road in front of West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) Office at Paribesh Bhavan, Salt Lake (near Beleghata Bypass crossing) on Wednesday, 16 December 2009 between 10am and 4pm has been agreed upon by a number of individuals, organisations and initiatives including Nagarik Mancha.

The single point programme is to demand for total withdrawal of permission for running sponge iron units with existing technology in the districts of West Midnapur, Bankura, Bardhaman and Purulia. We are expecting thousands of participant-protestors including 500 direct victims from the districts.

Kindly contact Paban Mukherjee (9831318265) for further information.

Hope to see you next Wednesday.

Kindly communicate this to all individuals, organizations and initiatives who might be interested.

In solidarity,

Naba Dutta
