NABARD SANCTIONS 6 SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD PROJECTS FOR TRIBALS IN THE STATE
Kolkata: March 2, 2010.

National bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), West
bengal Regional office sanctioned six Tribal Development Programmes
popularly known as 'WADI' projects for implementation in the state
benefitting 2800 tribal families with sustainable livelihood
activities. The target coverage is socio economically weak and
vulnerable tribal familes in Bankura, Birbhum, Darjeeling and
Coochbehar districts. The total assistance sanctioned under these
projects if Rs.12.61 crore including a grant assistance of Rs.11.49
crore and a loan component of Rs.1.12 crore. With this the cumulative
sanction under the programme in the State of West Bengal stood ar
Rs.33.73 crore of grant assistance and Rs.2.26 crore of loan
assistance covering 14 projects and 7 districts covering 8566 tribal
families. Out of these 14 pojects, the Backward Classes Welfare
Department, Government of West bengal has partnered with NABARD in six
of the projects with Rs.8.87 crore grant assitance.

The 'WADI' is a holistic model of tribal development aiming at
economic upliftment through sustainable agriculture, social
empowerment and improvement in quality of life including health and
women empowerment, in tribal predominant areas of the country. Based
on the soccessful experience of the 'WADI'  approach in Gujarat,
NABARD embarked upon an ambitious programme of replicating the 'WADI'
model across the country.

In West Bengal, location specific activities were identified in
consultation with the participant tribal families and these include
development of horticulture gardens with mango, cashew, lime, guava,
arecanut, etc. in combination with piggery, goat farming and bee
keeping. For the first time, total organic farming with organic
certification by an accredited agency is being contemplated in the
full district of Darjeeling where cultivation of fruit crops like
orange, peach, pulm and vegetables will be taken up under 'WADI'
project.
