BANKS HAVE A WIDER ROLE IN RESPECT OF SHGs
Bajkul: Saturday, March 13, 2010.
Banks should not limit their role only to providing loans to the Self
Help Groups but also try to make the SHG members literate and
educative. This would help them carry out the banking transactions
more efficiently and with more confidence. Participating at a seminar
on Banks and SHGs Shri Tarun Chattopadhyay, Manager, UBI, Bajkul
Branch, Bhagabanpur of Purba Medinipur expressed this view. The
seminar was organized as part of the Bharat Nirman Public Information
Campaign at Bajkul Milani Maha Vidyalaya ground today. Narrating his
experience of working in a branch at a tribal dominated area Shri
Chattopadhyay said that by utilizing his time after the office hours
to teach the tribal women had yielded good results. All of them became
literate and learnt how to sign their names.
Shri Chattopadhyay called for timely repayment of loans in order to
make the SHGs eligible for more financial support. He also advised SHG
members to prepare suitable plans even after making repayments of
loans initially. He said that without proper advance planning SHGs
cannot grow and may have to close their operations. This not only harm
the banks financially, makes the banks shaky in expending loans to the
SHGs. This is not a very conducive situation for the growth of SHGs,
he cautioned. He said that there are more than 100 SHGs under the
Bajkul Branch of the UBI and a total loan of Rs.1 crore has been
sanctioned to them. As far as repayment of loan by the SHGs is
concerned, UBI stands better than many of their counterparts, he
observed.
