Koirala's Death a 'Blessing in Disguise' for Nepal

New Delhi, 21 March.

The death of Nepali Congress Chief and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala might prove to be a 'blessing in disguise' for Nepal and it might pave the way in breaking the stagnation. This was stated by Anand Swaroop Verma, noted Hindi journalist and a keen observer of Nepali politics. He was talking to BBC's Hindi News service Yesterday.

Replying to the question by BBC on future Indo-Nepal relations after Koirala, Mr Verma opined that there won't be any significant change- India had already discovered the replacement of Koirala. When India saw Koirala's deteriorating health and declining influence, it in consonance with the practice of States trying to build inroads in other countries, also did so. She chose  Madhv Nepal as Koirala's replacement.

BBC wanted to know how Nepali Congress would now steer its anti Maoist campaign in absence of Koirala? Mr Verma said that Koirala's role in dealing Maoists had many shades. 'The pre 2006 Koirala government unleashed a reign of terror against Maoists by launching the infamous operation Kilo Sera-2. But at the same time he played very important role in concluding 12-point agreement between Maoists and seven party alliance (SPA). He also played equally significant role at the time of Comprehensive Peace Agreement when he signed the peace agreement with rebel leader Prachand in 2006,' said Verma.

BBC was eager to know the future of Maoists integration in to Nepal army which has been proved to be a great obstacle in advancing the peace process. Mr Verma did agree that the void left by the death of Koirala would create some problems in Nepal but 'it might prove to be a blessing in disguise. 'There is a state of stagnation and the recent statements of Nepal army shows  some unwelcome trends on the question of integration of Maoists PLA into Nepal Army', he said 'but it seems that the polarisation on this issue will be fast and it will break the stagnation. Either the process of integration will take a smooth course or there will be confrontation between Army and PLA.'
