An article in today's papers reports about an attack on environmental activists and media persons who were reporting on the illegal sand-mafia operating in Raigad district in Maharashtra. (See http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/Sand-mafia-attacks-TOI-team-in-Raigad/articleshow/5692010.cms for details)

This is the second time that Sumaira Abdulali has been attacked while raising objections to illegal sand mining activities in Maharashtra.

Increasingly, it appears that anyone who raises a voice against or highlights illegal activities is threatened, intimidated and attacked.

In such situations, government itself is rarely pro-active, appears slow to respond, and seldom acts decisively enough to prevent such attacks from happening again.

It is the responsibility of all of us citizens to come forward and show support, solidarity and willingness to stand by other fellow citizens like Sumaira who are fighting to preserve and protect our environment and society from being degraded and destroyed by such illegal and unlawful acts.

Sumaira has been working on the issue of Noise Pollution also and has done pioneering work to record, restrict and regulate the noise levels in our cities and towns. She has also spearheaded the successful recent citizen initiative against the use of private helipads as a means of personal transport in Mumbai.

See http://www.awaaz.org/ for details about Sumaira's organisation, the Awaaz Foundation, which is funded by Sumaira through her personal funds only.

We need to show her our support.

- Send an email to Sumaira expressing your support with a cc to us at info@karmayog.org .

- Support the Awaaz Foundation through donations (even if of Rs.100).

- Strengthen citizen involvement by complaining about noise by phoning 100.

Thanks
Vinay
