SARVA SHIKSHA ABHIYAN HAS MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION IN IMPROVING
THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE SCHOOLS
Bajkul: Sunday, March 14, 2010.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan has made significant contribution in improving
the infrastructure of the schools. The school buildings which were in
a pitiable condition have not only been repaired their condition have
been made much better enabling the teachers and the students to carry
out their teaching and learning process smooth. Participating at a
seminar at Bhagabanpur of Purba Medinipur district on Sarva Sbiksha
Abhiyan and Mid-Day Meal Shri Gostha Behari Das, Karmadhakshya of
Bhagabanpur Panchayat Samity made this observation. The seminar was
organized yesterday as part of the five-day Bharat Nirman Public
Information Campaign at Bajkul Minali Maha Vidyalaya ground. Shri Das
said that mothers' role is very important as far as implementation of
the social projects like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Mid-day meal are
concerned. Only their consciousness can bring about proper
implementation of the projects and children's education at the primary
level. Shri Das also underlined the responsibility of the
functionaries in charge of executing such projects and said that in
order to create a proper learning environment and system proper
infrastructure needs to be created. He laid emphasis on keeping up the
enthusiasm and progress that has been attained thanks to Sarva Shiksha
Abhiyan. 16000 SSKs have been set up and more such Kendras have to be
established, Shri Das said. Sanction for setting up new upper primary
schools is also being obtained and we have to take advantage of that.

Highlighting the importance of mid-day meal scheme, Shri Das said that
it's a very useful scheme to bring down the number of dropouts but
relying solely on the scheme would be wrong. All concerned should
think of the ways to retain the interests of the children in education
and thus retain them in schools. With cooperation of all the quality
of mid-day meal has to be improved and teacher should also extend
their cooperation in this effort, Shri Das said.

PEOPLE URGED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ICDS TO FIGHT MAL-NUTRITION
Bajkul: Sunday, March 14, 2010.

One of the major impediments to country's overall development is the
problem of under-nutrition. Even today 47 per cent of the children in
the country suffer from under-nutrition. Participating at a seminar on
ICDS and nutrition in Bhagabanpur of Purba Medinipur district Smt
Mitali Palodhi, Nutritionist, gave this information. The seminar was
organized yesterday as part of the five-day Bharat Nirman Public
Information Campaign at Bajkul Minali Maha Vidyalaya ground. Smt
Palodhi said that the incidence of under-nutrition is highest among
the women and adolescent girls. This problem cannot be addressed only
with some projects or programmes but needs awareness and cooperation
of all, she said. Quoting some data Smt. Palodhi said till now 30 out
of every 100 children is born with low weight. It's a matter of grave
concern as these children become victims of various kinds of ailments
afterwards. Calling for exclusive breast feeding to the children upto
six months she said this would fulfill their nutritional requirement
and provide them with immunity. She also called for giving a fair deal
to the girl children and thus removing gender disparities prevailing
in the families and society.

Highlighting the importance of ICDS, which is one of the biggest such
schemes in the world, Smt. Palodhi said that women and children should
make the best use of the service as it has been observed that many of
the eligible mothers and children stay away from the Anganwadi Centres
and thus fail to take advantage of the supplementary nutrition that
ICDS provides to them. She also advised all to take locally available
food and seasonal vegetables and fruits. She also urged all to abide
by some healthy practices and sanitation code to keep themselves free
from various kinds of ailments.

Smt. Namita Mandal, an officer in charge of the scheme in
Bhagahanpur-I Block said that efforts are now being made to bring more
children under ICDS for preprimary education. About 25000 children in
the age group of 0-6 had been brought under ICDS. But the number of
children having pre- primary education is much less. This area needs
urgent attention, she said. Calling for co-operation of all for
successful implementation of the scheme, Smt. Mondal also mentioned
about the Kishori Shakti Yojana under which the infant and adolescent
girls are being given supplementary nutrition and pre-primary
education. She said that in Bhagahanpur-1 Block 22 thousand women are
getting the benefit of the scheme. Out of them more than 2000 are
expectant mothers and about 2000 lactating mothers.

Smt. Archana Hait, Karmadhyaksha, Bhagahanpur-I Panchayat Samity, said
the more importance needs to be accorded to ICDS and its execution. As
many children as possible, will have to be brought under the scheme to
build a healthy and educated society, she said. Smt. Hait also called
upon the guardians to remove from their minds various misconceptions
about the scheme.
