Invitation to the Savitribai Phule literary conclave on Social Justice Traditions

I N V I T A T I O N

The Committee for Monitoring and Strengthening SCs/STs in Karnataka (CMASK) and the Karnataka Dalita Mahila Vedike (KDMV) invite you to the

Savitribai Phule Literary Conclave on Social Justice Traditions
Date: 3rd January 2015
Time: 10.00 am – 05.00 pm
Venue: Ambedkar Bhavan, Millers' Road, Vasanth Nagar, Bangalore-52

The program will explore the literary and cultural forms (including poetry, oral traditions such as ballads, role plays etc. that have a wide grassroots reach) of social justice in art and culture, and their role in combating violence and discrimination especially those based on caste and gender.

The day is chosen since it is the birth anniversary of

Savitribai Phule
a pioneering Dalit woman who started schools and hostels for Dalit girls way back in the 1848.

O
n this occasion, we request you to be
part of the discussions and deliberations
Discrimination, exclusion, stigma and u
nequal power relations are even
now being
reinforced in the name of culture and tradition.  Though mainstream narratives now are monopolized by dominant groups, there has always been a strong current of social justice tradition in art and literature.  Hence, there is a need to revalorize and centre stage the social justice literary traditions - from writing to poetry, theatre, dance and folk arts
--
to bring back to life the marvellous indigenous cultural traditions of music, dance and literature; and to educate & inspire the young so that they catch hold of their long lasting, unique and unmatchable traditions.

The conclave will have three panel discussions exploring literary social justice traditions from the perspective of, and in relation to, women
 (12 noon-1pm)
, caste
(1.30-2.30pm)
and religion
 (3-4pm)
. These will be interspersed with songs, cultural performances, poetry recitations and ballads.

Your presence and thought provoking sharing on the topic will indeed be valued to a great extent as it will inspire the entire gathering and enhance our joy.
You may bring your publications/CDs for display and sale.

Once again we request you to accept this invitation and grace the occasion.

Thanking you in anticipation for sparing your valuable time.

Waiting to get a positive response from your end,

Yours sincerely,
