Screen legend Dev Anand died in his sleep on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy of classics like 'Guide' and 'Hum Dono'.

From colleagues to fans - everyone woke up to a rude Sunday morning shock as the news of the legendary actor Dev Anand passing away in London unfolded. Hindi cinema's evergreen star who epitomised the suave, urban gentleman on screen, died after a cardiac arrest in London. He was 88.

"His son Sunil came out of the bathroom and saw that Dev saab was not responding. He called the doctor, who said that he had a heart attack. He died at 10 in the night in London," Mohan Churiwala, Dev Anand's manager, said.

According to Churiwala, the cremation will be held next week in London. "He will be cremated in London only after Tuesday. Cremation cannot take place till his daughter reaches there. His body is kept in a hospital right now," adding that his wife may also accompany her daughter.

He is survived by his wife, former actress Kalpana Karthik, a son and a daughter.

In a career spanning over 65 years, Dev Anand worked in films like `Kala Pani`, 'Guide`, `Hum Dono`, `Tere Ghar Ke Samne`, `Gambler`, `Jewel Thief`, `Hare Rama Hare Krishna` and `Ishq Ishq Ishq`.

The stalwart was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001. His last film `Chargesheet`, which released this year, was directed, written and produced by him. The film proved to be a dud at the Box Office, but his enthusiasm to contribute more to Hindi Cinema could not be dampened.

A controversial personality, Dev Anand made films that were bold, something the Indian audiences could never expect from an Indian filmmaker.

However, he was loved and adored for who he was - a happy-go-lucky man, who was full of life.

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan expressed grief over the death of his senior colleague and took to the Twitter to say, "Had just met Dev Sahab at his premiere recently…he was weak but full of life(sic)".

Dev Anand seemed to have adopted the philosophy of the song "Main Zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya" from "Hum Dono", in real life too. His body of work speaks volumes about the man who was not only a great actor, but multi-tasker and a trendsetter.

If as an actor he proved his versatility with hits like 'Tere Ghar Ke Samne', 'Jewel Thief' and 'Guide', as a director he made a "zara hatke" movie 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' that also gave Bollywood its first anglicised glamour icon in Zeenat Aman.

He played a long innings in filmdom and saw ups and downs, but his never-say-die spirit reigned supreme. His fans and colleagues still say, "Abhi na jao chodkar ki dil abhi bhara nahin".

Dev Anand: Death of a Bollywood legend and controversy thereafter

Manjula Pooja Shroff | Sunday, December 11, 2011

Dev Anand came alive when his death was announced. Print and digital media and social networking websites were all agog with news in his memory. Papers carried front page news of the demise of the evergreen hero. For several decades now, Dev Anand had been living without much recognition. Though he continued to meaningfully contribute to Indian cinema by making a film here and there, it was nothing that people took much note of. His death turned him into the overnight evergreen popular star that he once was in the 60s and 70s.

However, all the media attention that Dev Anand's death received was frowned upon by Press council chairman Justice Katju. The point made by Justice Katju is reasonable. When there are pressing socio-economic issues, when over 2.5 lakh farmers have committed suicide since independence, when the matter of corruption has brought the entire country international shame and business and corporate sentiments are very low, should we be showcasing Bollywood in prime space?

Earlier, former Infosys chairman Narayan Murthy had raised concern that front page news in India was so depressing and negative that it is harmful to inculcate the old age habit of reading the paper first thing in the morning among students. It is better to go straight to the sports page which talks about man's achievements rather than read the first page that talk of man's failure.

Notwithstanding the controversy of whether or not his demise should be given so much prominence, Dev Anand, brought about much pioneering on the silver screen in his prime. The famous character of 'Raju' in Guide where he played the role of a man involved in an extramarital relationship who later turns to spiritualism and goes onto become a Godman, almost like the preaching of Osho, or the Hippie culture with Zeenat Aman in 'Dum Maro Dum' or the various heroines that he was paired with from abroad. These movies, gave the then closed Indian community a worth of their penny, just to have a 'dekho' at the 'firangi mems'.

The social media naturally went wonky, every other post was a Youtube video from Dev Anand's popular films, be it 'Abhi na Jo Chod ke' from Hum Dono or 'Ek Ghar Banaoonga…Teri ghar ke samne'. If the response that his death received is any indication of his popularity, then he definitely scored. Only weeks ago, the music industry lost Jagjit Singh followed by Bhupen Hazarika and though both these deaths were well reported with radios stations playing Jagjit Singh ghazals all day long, the response to Dev Anand's demise was far more spontaneous and unanimous.
His inimitable style, his charming good looks, his convincing belief of the never-say-die attitude for romance on celluloid, all this made for the star whose loss was mourned by pouring out remembrance of him. A man who lived tall and died practicing what he believed in 'Never hang your boots'.

Dev Anand believed in what he did: Zeenat Aman

Mumbai: Zeenat Aman got her break playing Dev Anand's sister, Janice/Jasbir, in Hare Rama Hare Krishna, a film directed by the legend, who died last week. The former beauty queen tells us of how she learnt a lot simply by looking at the star in action

"I will be eternally indebted to Dev Saab," says actor Zeenat Aman, who woke up last Sunday to a barrage of calls and messages, all seeking to inform her that Dev Anand, one of the most-loved stars of Bollywood, was no more.

Dev Anand was, in some ways, responsible for Aman's career. She was signed on to play the star's sister in Hare Rama Hare Krishna, in what turned out to be her debut film.

"I was heading to Germany to join my stepfather, when I got a call from Dev saab's office to do Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Technically, this wasn't my first offer. I was offered O P Ralhan's Hulchal, however, the director realised that it was not the right launch-pad for me and put me on to Dev saab." In many ways, Aman's was a lucky break.

Says the actor, "Not too many established actresses wanted to play Dev saab's sister, especially since Mumtaz had already been signed on to play the romantic lead. Tanuja was almost finalised (for my role), when she opted out."

Aman's audition went like a dream, too. "I was auditioning at Filmistan, and I went with my mother. I was fortunate to do my audition in English, something that was unheard of in those days.

I was signed on immediately and we left for Kathmandu. We shot the film at one stretch, again unheard of in those days. I didn't stress over my role. I just watched Dev saab and got inspired to give my best."

"It was a dream launch and I feared that nothing would match up." Aman and Anand went on to do a series of films through the '70s. The transition, says Aman, from playing siblings to lovers was gradual.

"Dev saab made it happen that way since he wrote the films. In our next film, Heera Panna, Dev Saab's romantic lead was Raakhee. Throughout the film his heart went out to her, while I remained the other woman.

In our next film, Ishq Ishq Ishq, we played the romantic lead pair. Thereafter we went on to do a series of films like Warrant, Kalabaz, Darling Darling and Prem Shastra. Each film with Dev Saab was a learning experience."

Aman says she learnt much from Anand. "He believed in what he did. He put his money where his mouth was. He was never afraid to fail. I learnt to be courageous in my career decisions because of him."

"What does one say about a man who meant so much to one's career? Dev Saab was indefatigable. To the end he continued to believe in what he did," she signs off.

When Anand almost declared his love for Zeenat

London: Basking in the glow of the success of 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' in 1971, Dev Anand, the ever-romantic hero, soon realised that he was in love with the film's leading lady and his discovery Zeenat Aman.

Describing his feelings for Zeenat, Dev Anand wrote in his autobiography, 'Romancing With Life' that he enjoyed it when newspapers and magazines started linking them together romantically after the film's success.

He almost declared his love to her, but quietly withdrew when he saw her getting close to Raj Kapoor, who wanted to cast her in his film 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram'.

When Anand almost declared his love for Zeenat

"Whenever and wherever she was talked about glowingly, I loved it; and whenever and wherever I was discussed in the same vein she was jubilant. In the subconscious, we had become emotionally attached to each other," Dev Anand wrote in his 2007 book.

Some years later, Dev Anand admitted he felt jealous when Raj Kapoor kissed Zeenat in full view of the invited audience at the premiere of his next film 'Ishq Ishq Ishq'.

He soon realised that he was in love with her and wanted to declare it to her at a romantic meeting at the Taj in Mumbai. He wrote: "Suddenly, one day I felt I was desperately in love with Zeenat and wanted to say so to her! To make an

honest confession, at a very special, exclusive place meant for romance. I chose the Rendezvous at the Taj, on top of the city, where we had dined together once earlier."

Dev Anand wrote that he called up Zeenat and arranged to go to the meeting place after a brief presence at a party, where "a drunken Raj Kapoor .. threw his arms around her exuberantly. This suddenly struck me as a little too familiar.

And the way she reciprocated his embrace seemed much more than just polite and courteous." Suspecting something, Dev Anand recalled that a rumour had been floating that Zeenat had gone to Raj Kapoor's studio for a screen test for the main role in his new movie 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram'.

"The hearsay now started ringing true. My heart was bleeding," he wrote. The situation changed further for Dev Anand when Raj Kapoor, "in drunken joviality", told Zeenat: "You are breaking your promise that you will always be seen by me only in a white sari."

A dejected Dev Anand wrote: "More embarrassment was written large on her face, and Zeenat was not the same Zeenat for me any more. My heart broke into pieces... The rendezvous had already lost all meaning in my mind. I sneaked out of the place."

He added: "The evening delivered a blow to my personality, and my dominating spirit. I had decided on the spur of the moment to tell Zeenat for the first time how much I loved her. And that there was an idea in my mind of another

story that would put her on a pedestal as never before, the highest so far. But that was never to be."
