National Seminar on System of Rice Intensification
Kolkata: Thursday, July 08, 2010
To mark NABARD's foundation day, The National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development will organize a National Seminar on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) at Raichak, South 24 Parganas on 11-12 July 2010. This national seminar will be inaugurating by Dr. K.G. Karmakar, MD of the Bank to share experiences of all stake holders and arriving at strategies to upscale the adoption of SRI by farmers.
In the age of global warming and its' impact on agriculture seizing everybody's attention coupled with concerns of production to feed ever-increasing mouths, perhaps the answer is SRI. The System of Rice Intensification, popularly called SRI, is a methodology of growing rice with less water and increased production and could be a solution to many of the woes. In this method, the methane emission that is an issue in traditional paddy (one of the GHGs) is also reduced.
The discussion during the seminar will be based on learnings from field level and identifying what needs to be done more in terms of research and extension and other support. And to assess whether the concept of SRI can be extended to other crops.
