Meanwhile, Indian Hockey Federation chief KPS Gill said Hockey India was trying to hush up the matter.
"There should be a proper police inquiry into it. The Supreme Court has stated that whenever a lady makes a sexual harassment allegations, her complaint should be taken on face value," he said.
"This inquiry is an eyewash. It should be handed over to the police. I know these people, at the end of the inquiry they will come out and say, nothing happened," he alleged.
On the other hand,Defying the government's age limitation guidelines, Vidya Stokes' nomination for Hockey India (HI) president's post was today accepted by the returning officer, setting the stage for a showdown between the sports ministry and the national federation.Stokes's candidature came under scanner yesterday after the sports ministry made it clear that the "no objection" given to Hockey India for the July 28 polls was conditional and would apply only on abiding with the recent age limitation guidelines of the government.
HI secretary-general Narinder Batra said: "These are shocking allegations and we are going to take strong actions if these allegations are proved true. We have formed a four-member body and they will meet on Wednesday to investigate the charges."
"Strict action will be taken against the videographer if the charges are proved true," Batra added.
Former India captains Ajit Pal Singh and Zafar Iqbal are a part of the panel. Sudarshan Pathak and Rajeev Mehta are the other two.

has submitted his resignation to Hockey India Interim President Vidya Stokes. The president will take a decision," Batra said after a hearing of the player who made the sexual harassment charges, the coaching staff and women's hockey officials.
Kaushik will not be part of the team for the Asian Champions Trophy in Korea from July 27 pending an inquiry into the sex scandal by a four-member panel comprising Rajiv Mehta (chairman), former players Zafar Iqbal and Ajit Pal Singh and Sudharsan Pathak.
The videographer Basavraj whose photographs with a prostitute plunged the game into a moral crisis has already been sacked.
Batra said the four-member panel will submit its report to Hockey India on Friday and HI will, in turn, make its recommendations to Sports Authority of India.
"The panel heard all the parties and they have sought time till tomorrow to make their replies. The panel will submit to us their report and we will proceed from there," he said.
Batra, however, said Hockey India has no power to take action against the videographer or any other coaching staff.
"We will submit our report with recommendations to the SAI which can take action according to the government service rules. The coach or the videographer are not working under us.
They are employees of SAI.
"I have taken legal advice also. Nobody is guilty until proved. But, ultimately it is the job of SAI what action to be taken against anybody who is found guilty," Batra said.
Asked how many players signed the letter to HI alleging sexual harassment of a woman player, Batra said, "Besides the player, 31 other players signed the letter supporting her."
One of the panel members Zafar Iqbal, however, almost absolved Kaushik of any wrongdoing saying that the case of the woman player "was not a strong one" and her complaints were sometimes "dicey".
"According to me it appears that the case is not a very strong one. It should have been sorted out much earlier. It had been going on for around six months. I am not defending anybody, who are guilty will come out soon.
"But the coach (Kaushik) has been attached with the women's team since 1991 and no complaint had come earlier. He also played hockey with us and we know him. Sometimes her allegations are very dicey," said the former captain.
A day after the sex scandal came to light, Kaushik stepped down as the head coach and vowed to clear his name, saying the allegations were baseless and he was a victim of "big-time conspiracy".
Stunned by allegations of sexual harassment against him, Indian women's hockey coach MK Kaushik today said the scandal is a conspiracy hatched by players who failed to get a place in the national side.
Hockey India (HI) also sacked videographer Basavraj whose photographs with prostitutes during the recent Canada and China tour were sent to HI through an anonymous e-mail.
"Kaushik has submitted his resignation to Hockey India interim president Vidya Stokes. The president will take a decision," said Narinder Batra, Hockey India secretary general.
Assistant coaches Vasu Thapliyal and Mohd. Khalid Modi will now be in-charge of the team for the Asian Champions Trophy in South Korea from July 27.
The sports ministry has also taken note of the incident and said it will look into the matter.
Batra said the four-member panel, comprising Rajiv Mehta, Zafar Iqbal, Ajitpal Singh and Sudarshan Pathak, will submit its report to Hockey India on Friday. Hockey India, in turn, will make its recommendations to Sports Authority of India (SAI).
"The panel heard all the parties and they have sought time till tomorrow to make their replies. The panel will submit to us their report on Friday and we will proceed from there," he said.
Batra, however, said Hockey India has no power to take action against the videographer or any other coaching staff in connection with the scandal which came out in the open after a written complaint by one of the fringe players Ranjita Devi.
Asked how many players signed the letter to Hockey India alleging sexual harassment of a woman player, Batra said, "Besides the player, 31 other players signed the letter supporting her."
Kaushik, on his part, maintained that he was innocent and was confident of coming out clean after the inquiry.
"The allegations are all baseless. I am innocent. I am confident of coming out clean because I believe in truth and the truth will prevail," said Kaushik, who has been involved with the women team for close to 20 years.
"She (complainant) made the allegations out of frustration. Please look at her performance since the Junior World Cup onwards, I don't think she deserves a place in the team on merit," Kaushik said.
"I am deeply hurt because my image has been damaged. All these years I have worked with full sincerity. But I have submitted my resignation because after all this I won't be able to give my 100% to the team," he said.
Asked whether he will return to the job if his name is cleared of all the charges, he said, "If you ask me now I don't think I will be able to coach the team again. But if my department (Haryana Sports Department) forces me I will think over it. If you ask all the players individually the truth will come out. If feel the players have been pressurised to sign the letter and its time Hockey India got to the bottom of the story otherwise these sort of incidents will continue to happen."
But the coach (Kaushik) has been attached with the women's team since 1991 and no complaint had come earlier. He also played hockey with us and we know him. Sometimes her allegations are very dicey," said the former captain.
"This is a big-time conspiracy against me with many hands behind it. Those who failed to earn a place in the national team have come out with such a cheap act," Kaushik told PTI-Bhasha.
Kaushik has withdrawn from the Asian Champions Trophy in South Korea from July 27, insisting that it was his moral duty to step aside until proven innocent.
"I will prove my innocence. I can't believe that one can go to such an extent to level charges against me," he said.
Indian Hockey yesterday plunged into a moral crisis after a member of the women's team sent a written complaint to the federation officials alleging sexual harassment by videographer Basavraj and a member of coaching staff.
Hockey India has sacked the videographer after photographs of him with a prostitute during March-April China Tour surfaced in the media.
A four-member inquiry committee has been formed to look into the sex scandal. The committee comprises Rajiv Mehta (chairman), former players Zafar Iqbal and Ajit Pal Singh and Sudharsan Pathak.
Kaushik said the allegations against him are baseless and he is confident of coming out of the crisis clean.
"With my name associated with this scandal, how can I go to the stadium with the team? No question arises of me accompanying the team to South Korea. I am not in the position to lead the side there and work with mental peace," said Kaushik, who had mentored the side to the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games gold medal triumph.
Kaushik said the allegation has sullied his 20-year-old father-like image in the team as he never thought players would go to such an extent to fulfill their vested interests.
"Go and ask the players, why they have done so? I have always maintained that those players who will play to their fullest will remain in the team. Your performance will ultimately be counted and help in cementing your place in the side.
"In the last 20 years as women's hockey team coach, no one pointed a finger towards my integrity. My players have always treated me like a father-figure. It's difficult to understand what prompted them to come out with such false charges against me," Kaushik wondered.
Kaushik said he has not spoken to any of the players over phone after the scandal broke out yesterday and will continue to maintain silence until proven innocent.
"What is left for me to speak about? Truth will come out soon and I will treat this incident as an eye-opener for me. I'll urge the media to go and ask these players why they have done it?"
Kaushik's contract as will expire in November this year after the Asian Games in China.
Stokes, who earlier held the post of Indian Women's Hockey Federation chief, is presently 83 and as per the government guidelines no official who is 70 or above is eligible to contest elections of National Sports Federations.
But justice RC Chopra approved of Stokes's nomination after Hockey India refused to go by the government's guidelines, saying the national body was bound by the Societies Act and its own Constitution.
Hockey India secretary general Narinder Batra, who was present during the scrutiny of the nomination papers today as Stokes's representative, doubted government's intention and said the conditional "no objection" given to them last year does not mention guidelines on age.
"We duly accept government's guidelines on tenure limitation of two terms of four years each. When we got the 'no objection' from the government in August 2009, age limitation was not there. We don't accept the amendments made in the guidelines in May 2010 because they were not made with clear intentions," Batra told PTI.
"We are not governed by the government, we are governed by the Societies Act and by our own Constitution. The government has no right to interfere in our Constitution," he said.
Recently, the Badminton Federation of India had also defied the government guidelines and re-elected VK Verma as its president for another term past the revised 12 years limit.
If that was not enough, Verma even said Badminton Association of India (BAI) had become self-sufficient and did not need government funding to run the sport in the country.
Batra too hinted at adopting BAI's policy and said the national game will continue to run even if the government decides to stop pumping in money.
"Hockey is our national sport, so if the government stops funding it will be very sad. But numerous lovers of the game still exist in the country who, I know, will come forward to support the game.
"If the government stops funding its their wish. It won't affect hockey in the country," said Batra, who will be contesting for the secretary general's post.
Government-appointed election observer of Hockey India polls SK Mendiratta, who was also present during the scrutiny of nominations, said the ball is now in the sports ministry's court.
"The returning officer justice Chopra accepted Stokes's nomination because Hockey India officials said they were not bound by government's guidelines. They said they will go by their by-laws and are ready to face any consequences," Mendiratta said.
"I will submit my report to the sports ministry and it now upto the ministry to decide what action it wants to take against Hockey India," he said.
Mendiratta also informed that all the nominations for the 17 posts of Hockey India executive boardIndia executive board were accepted, except for Karnataka State Hockey Association secretary K Krishnamurthy, who is a member of former India captain Pargat Singh's faction.
Pargat is also in the running for the president's post of Hockey India along with Stokes.
Surinder Kaur to lead India in Champions Trophy
Veteran forward Surinder Kaur will lead an 18-member Indian squad which will take part in the inaugural Asian Women's Champions Trophy at Busan, South Korea from July 27-31.The squad, to be coached by MK Kaushik, was selected after a trial in Bhopal, a Hockey India release said.
The top four teams from the Asia Cup held at Bangkok last November will compete in the tournament to be held under the aegis of the Asian Hockey Federation.
India won the silver medal in that tournament. The other teams at the Asian Champions Trophy are China, Japan and hosts South Korea.
The Squad: Goalkeepers: E Rajani, Dipika Murty Defenders: Binita Toppo, Subhadra Pradhan, Joydeep Kaur Midfielders: Ritu Rani, Mukta Prava Barla, Monika, Kirandeep Kaur, Deepika

Zafar Iqbal finds hockey player's allegations weak
Former India captain Zafar Iqbal, a member of the Hockey India (HI) committee looking into charges of sexual harassment against national women's coach Maharaj Kishan Kaushik, Wednesday found the allegations against the Olympian weak and conspiratorial, looking at their timing.Zafar said Ranjitha Devi, who Tuesday charged Kaushik of harassment with 30 of her fellow-players signing the letter, could not come out with cogent replies when questioned. Madhu Yadav, the manager of the team, was also present.
"The case is not strong. The girl's complaints were dicey. We have heard both the parties and we will decide on the outcome once we have the replies from both the parties. Kaushik has been the national coach of India since 1991 and many of us have played with him," Zafar told reporters after a meeting of the committee.
"I cannot rule out conspiracy as it is clashing with the (HI) elections. The girl says this is happening from the past six months, if so why is she coming out now? Also, when I asked whether she faced any physical harassment like touching, she denied it," Zafar said.
The five-member committee of Rajiv Mehta (chairman), Olympians Ajit Pal Singh and Zafar and Sudharsan Pathak, met both Kaushik and Ranjitha Wednesday afternoon to record their versions.
Kaushik and Ranjitha have been asked to make written submissions Thursday. These, along with the committee's findings, will be sent to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for action Friday.
Pathak also concurred with Zafar.
"Kaushik has been deputed for his work by the government of India. He was doing well. There are no allegations against him in the last 10 years. The committee will look into the matter. We also need to verify the girl's claims as this has happened for the first time in Indian hockey," said Pathak.
HI secretary general Narinder Batra also said that the other girls in the team have denied facing a similiar incident.
"I spoke to the captain and she said the rest of the girls have not faced any such incident. But we want a free and a fair trial and I do not want to mix the elections with the girl's complaint," he said.
"We heard both the parties who have been asked to submit their replies by tomorrow (Thursday). HI will then send their recommendations to the Sports Authority of India Friday as both Kaushik and the videographer are the employees of SAI. Kaushik has resigned willingly and since it was addressed to the president, I forwarded it to the president," he said.
HI also sacked the videographer, M. Basavaraja, after photographs of him with a prostitute during an overseas tour, surfaced in the media.
The team left for Asian Champions Trophy in Busan, South Korea, Wednesday evening and Batra said he has spoken to the girls.
"I have spoken to the team and have tried to boost them before the Championships. They have promised to do well," he said.

On the eve of this Test, which is Muttiah Muralitharan's swansong, Kumar Sangakkara said, "if Murali takes eight wickets (to reach 800), we will win." At the end of Day 4, both objectives were on the verge of being fulfilled as India stood on the brink of a humiliating defeat. After

following on, having folded up for 276 in the first innings, Muralitharan's last-ball strike reduced India to 181 for 5 in their second essay. With VVS Laxman and skipper MS Dhoni being the last recognised batsmen left, it will take something heroic to avert defeat.
Despite Virender Sehwag recording his 20th Test ton , the day will be remembered for the strong performances with ball from Murali and Lasith Malinga.
When Sehwag and Laxman rejoined battle at 140 for 3, Murali produced a magic spell of 10-0-32-4 that resulted in Sri Lanka enforcing the follow-on, and the offie's 67th five-for. While he got through Dhoni's defence with a ripper that spun in sharply through the gate, in his next over, the offie got Yuvraj Singh to nick to slip. Mind you, for a little over an hour before that, Dhoni and Yuvraj were fluent in their 74-run stand.
But Murali's twin strike started a collapse as India were bowled out for 276 from being a respectable 252 for 5 at one stage. Even before Murali started spinning his web around the Indian lower order, Sehwag and Laxman helped Sri Lanka's cause by falling into the traps set for their dismissal with reckless shots.
While Sehwag chased a wide delivery from Chanaka Welegedara and edged it to first slip, Laxman miscued an attempted pull off to deep square leg. In the second innings, the news got worse before it became temporarily better. Gambhir, who had succumbed to Malinga's second ball in the first innings, edged the third second-innings ball that he faced to the keeper.
Sehwag then quickly got to 30 before playing yet another flashy shot — again off Welegedara — and Jayawardene plucked a sharp catch at gully.
Then came the brightest patch of the day for India as Rahul Dravid (44) and Sachin Tendulkar (84) added 119 for the third wicket. More importantly, the senior pros deprived the hosts of a wicket for 156 minutes.
Just when it appeared that they would carry on till stumps, disaster struck in the form of Malinga. The slinger first had Dravid caught at short square-leg, flicking uppishly. Then, 23 minutes before stumps, Malinga got rid of the danger man Tendulkar with a scorching yorker.
The last thing India needed at this stage was another wicket, but Yuvraj obligingly edged Murali to slip.

India hockey coach to be investigated for harassment
REUTERS, Jul 21, 2010, 05.25pm ISTNEW DELHI: The coach of the Indian women's hockey team has pulled out of the squad after a player accused him and some of his staff of sexually harassing her, officials from the sport's federation said on Wednesday.
MK Kaushik's departure could deal a blow to the team's prospects ahead of next month's hockey World Cup in Argentina, as he was seen as instrumental to raising the team's performance.
Officials of the Hockey India (HI) federation told reporters that Kaushik, a former Olympian and team captain, has offered to "withdraw" from the team until his name was cleared.
Kaushik, said the accusations were a "big-time conspiracy against me." "I will prove my innocence," he said.
HI will launch an investigation into the accusations, naming a panel on Thursday, federation secretary Narinder Batra said.
"Hopefully the panel will give its recommendations before next month's World Cup so that we can either get a new coach or reinstate Kaushik if he is found innocent," Batra said.
The federation, however, said it had suspended a team support staff after receiving evidence that he had been involved with prostitutes.
HI President Vidya Stokes told reporters that an assistant coach will take charge of the team for the Asian Champions Trophy in Busan, South Korea, this month.
Kaushik, a member of India's 1980 Moscow Olympic gold medal winning men's hockey team, met HI officials on Wednesday, but details were not immediately available.

Woman hockey member alleges sexual harassment
Arghya Ganguly, TNN, Jul 20, 2010, 11.20pm ISTNEW DELHI: A member of the Indian women's hockey team has accused team's coach and Olympian, Maharaj Kishan Kaushik, of sexual harassment.
An anonymous letter dated June 11 was sent to the ministry, a copy of which is with TOI, saying, "Mr Kaushik asks for sexual favours from the junior girls and passes lewd comments by calling them to his room on the pretext of 'game meeting'. The girls, all coming from poor and humble background are too scared to speak against the coach. A couple of years back the coach also had adulterous relations with a lady member of the coaching staff. They together spoiled the whole atmosphere of the camp. The camp became a means for their illicit deeds."
Kaushik, when contacted, vehemently denied the allegation. "I don't know who has written the letter. But whoever has written it, I want the ministry to find out and punish the perpetrator for slandering my name. That's all I have to say about this."
The letter goes on to say: "Our team has two videographers. One is Mr Basavraj who is basically a photographer employed with the Sports Authority of India, Bangalore. He only knows how to record matches and has zero knowledge of computers. The other videographer Ms H Nalini is a software professional... Nalini is the main requirement of the team looking into the importance of video analysis in modern hockey. Yet for any foreign tour Kaushik takes Basavraj with the team, the reason being Basavraj bribes Kaushik and also buys him drinks on tours abroad and pays for his shopping. The whole team is upset with this."
The player further alleges in the letter: "Kaushik lacks the quality of tactical play that is required to compete at elite level. He is psychologically unfit." The letter ends with a lament that the Indian women's hockey team is not able to perform well because of the coach.
"Sir, our women hockey players are really talented and the team can be amongst the best in the world but the politics of the coach is ruining the team. MK Kaushik is using his reputation to hide his wrong-doings... he is misusing his position as the chief coach."
Meanwhile, a TV channel added to the sleaze by showing video clippings of a team official in a compromising position with a couple of girls. When contacted, Rajiv Mehta, chairman of a five-member committee formed to probe into this incident, told TOI: "We have received a complaint. We had a meeting and we have dropped the videographer from the team with immediate effect. Kaushik also told us that he won't tour with the team until his name is cleared. We have called the girl complainant tomorrow for a meeting."

Chak De! India (Hindi: चक दे इंडिया English: "Go For It, India!")[2] is a 2007 Bollywood sports film about field hockey in India. It is directed by Shimit Amin, produced by Yash Raj Films, and stars Shahrukh Khan as Kabir Khan, the former captain of the Indian hockey team. After a disastrous loss to the Pakistani hockey team, Khan is ostracized from the sport. He and his mother are further forced from their ancestral home by angry neighbors. Seven years later in an attempt to redeem himself, Khan becomes the coach for the Indian women's hockey team with the goal of turning its sixteen contentious players into a champion team. After leading the women's team to the Gold, Khan restores his reputation and returns with his mother to their home, welcomed by those who had shunned them years before.
Chak De! India explores religious bigotry, the legacy of partition, ethnic/regional prejudice, and sexism in contemporary India through field hockey.[3][4][5] Screenwriter Jaideep Sahni decided to write a fictional screenplay based on the winning of the Gold by the Indian women's field hockey team at the 2002 Commonwealth Games after reading about it in the newspaper.[6][7] Thus the characters, while inspired by the real team and coaches, were invented by Sahni.[8] Although some media outlets compared Kabir Khan to real-life hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi,[9] Sahani has stated that he was unaware of Negi's tribulations while writing the script and that the resemblance with Negi's life was coincidental.[10]
Earning over Rs 639 million, Chak De! India was the fourth highest grossing movie of 2007 in India [11] and was critically acclaimed.[12] Chak De! India has won numerous awards (including eight for Best Film) and received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.[13] The suspension of the Indian Hockey Federation in April 2008 emphasized the film's influence. After a new hockey council was formed, former hockey player, Aslam Sher Khan, stated in an interview, "We have to make a Team India as you have seen in bollywood blockbuster Chak De! India. There are players from several parts of the country. We have to unite them to make a powerful force."[14]

[edit] Plot
The film opens in Delhi, India during the final minutes of the Hockey World Cup. The game is between the Pakistan men's national field hockey team and the India men's national field hockey team, with Pakistan leading, 1-0. When Indian team captain and hockey superstar, Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) is fouled, he elects to take the penalty stroke himself. However, his strike flies just above the goal, and India suffers a crushing defeat. Soon after, the media begins to circulate a photograph of him accepting a handshake from the head of the Pakistani team, speculating that Khan (who is a Muslim)[5] might have "thrown" the game as an act of sympathy towards Pakistan. The religious prejudice exhibited towards Khan by the entire society at large [4][5] forces him and his mother out of their ancestral home and into exile.
Seven years later, Indian sport officials are surprised to learn that Khan wants to coach the Indian woman's field hockey team, a job no one else wants (as, an official indicates, the only long term role for women is to "cook and clean"). Khan thus finds himself in charge of a group of 16 women from all sections of India, who are divided by their own competitive natures and individual prejudices. One of the youngest players, Komal Chautala (Chitrashi Rawat) (from a village in Haryana) conflicts with Preeti Sabarwal (Sagarika Ghatge) from Chandigarh whom she refers to somewhat derisively as "memsaab" while tough girl Balbir Kaur (Tanya Abrol) from the Punjab has an extremely short temper that impacts the team. Balbir also bullies Rani Dispotta (Seema Azmi) and Soimoi Kerketa (Nisha Nair), who are both from remote villages in Jharkhand. Mary Ralte (Kimi Laldawla) from Mizoram and Molly Zimik (Masochon "Chon Chon" Zimik) from Manipur (in North-East India) are both treated as "foreign" by virtually everyone they meet and face repeated sexual harassment. The team's captain, Vidya Sharma (Vidya Malvade), is forced to choose between hockey and the wishes of her husband's family, while Preeti's boyfriend, the (fictional) vice captain of the India national cricket team Abimanyu Singh (Vivan Bhatena), is deeply threatened by her involvement with the team.
Khan realizes that he can only turn the girls into a winning team if he can help them to overcome these divisions and learn to cooperate with and help each other. Thus during the first few days, he benches a number of players who refuse to conform to his rules, including the most experienced player, Bindia Naik (Shilpa Shukla). In response, she repeatedly attempts to encourage the players to revolt against Khan. Bindia finally succeeds and in anger, Khan resigns. As a sign of good will, however, he invites the staff and team to a going away lunch at McDonald's. The anger that the team felt towards Khan and each other evaporates, however, when some local boys make a pass at Mary and Molly. In response, Balbir attacks them, an act which leads to a brawl between the boys and the entire team. Khan, recognizing that this is their first instance of working together as a team, repeatedly prevents the staff from intervening. His only action is to stop a man from striking one of the women with a cricket bat from behind, telling him that there are no cowards in hockey.[15] After the fight, the women (now bonded as a team) beg Khan to remain as their coach.
This newly found unity serves them through a series of additional challenges. When hockey officials suddenly decide not to send the women's team to Australia for The World Championship, the girls unite in a challenge match against the men's team. Despite losing this match, their superb performance on the field forces the officials to change their mind and send the team to The World Championship. Once in Australia, the team faces a number of difficult matches with teams such as the Hockeyroos (Australia), the Black Sticks Women (New Zealand), the Las Leonas (Argentina), and the South Korean team (known for its use of the man-to-man marking technique). While initially still working to overcome their differences throughout the matches, the girls learn to act as a single unit. This move eventually leads them to victory and the restoration of Khan's good name. In doing so, they not only destroy the prejudices which once separated them, but prove to their families and country the merit of women's athletics. At the end, Khan returns with his mother to their ancestral home, welcomed by those who had shunned them years before.
[edit] Production
[edit] Background
A short article about the winning of the Gold by the women's team at the 2002 Commonwealth Games inspired screenwriter Jaideep Sahni to create a film about the Indian Women's Hockey Team.[8] Director Shamit Amin noted the lack of coverage of the women's team by the media and stated that "there are a lot of odds these players are up against".[16]
The media often compared hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi (who faced accusations of throwing the match against Pakistan during the 1982 Asian Games) with the character of Kabir Khan in the media.[9][17][18][19][20] In response Negi commented that, "this movie is not a documentary of Mir Ranjan Negi's life".[21] Sahani has also stated that he was unaware of Negi's tribulations while writing the script and that the resemblance with Negi's life was coincidental.[10][22] Negi joined the production team after his name was suggested by the national coach of the women's team Maharaj Krishan Kaushik, who was with the team when it won the Commonwealth Games' gold in 2002.
The screenplay drew from interviews with current members of the women's field hockey team as well as the coaches. Kaushik later noted that:
- Many of the incidents shown in the movie are true. How the coach actually throws a girl out when she is not listening, and then goes out himself and there are three to four other girls also standing there because they disobeyed his instructions. This happened with Pritam Siwach [...] The scene where they start fighting, happened to us when we were returning from a game in Bangalore, and some boys started passing comments [...] The actual game-situations we had to actually challenge another team after being disallowed from participating in an international tournament's qualifiers, and give it in writing, that we will qualify [...] And lastly the coach's portrayal, he goes to the match on a scooter. The team wins, but he still returns on a scooter. So the Coach's stature and status, you know, is always here.[22]
In addition, Sahni noted that, "the story of Chak De was deeply inspired by the real life story of ex Chief National Coach Maharaj Krishan Kaushik and his Indian Women's hockey team's real feat of winning the Commonwealth and many other championships."[23]
[edit] Development
After Sahini approached them both, Kaushik and Negi became involved with the development of the film. Sahini first met with Kaushik and later recalled that, "M K Kaushik and his girls taught us all we knew about hockey. Then he recommended Negi to us, because when we finished writing and finished casting, we needed someone to train the girls. Negi assembled a team of hockey players to train the girls."[22] Kaushik also states in the same interview that, "I taught him everything about the game, starting from how the camp is conducted, how the girls come from different backgrounds and cultures, the psychological factors involved. Also how the coach faces pressure to select girls from different states and teams."[22]
Sahini then contacted Negi and asked him to coach the actors portraying the hockey team. While not initially enthusiastic about being involved in the film, Negi changed his mind after reading the screenplay. Negi coached the cast stating, "I trained the girls for six months. Waking up at 4, traveling from Kandivili to Churchgate. We would retire around 11 in the night. It was tiring. But we were on a mission [...] They couldn't run; couldn't hold the hockey sticks. I ensured none of them [would have to] cut their nails or eye-brows (as the players do). The girls have worked very hard. I salute them."[9] Some of the actors however, such as Chitrashi, Sandia, and Raynia were cast because they were actual hockey players.[24] ReelSports, under the direction of Sport Action Director Rob Miller,[25][26] also worked with Negi to train the girls and Shahrukh Khan for the film. Of working with Khan, Negi recalled that everything was planned, "including the penalty stroke that SRK missed. That shot alone took us nearly 20 hours as I was keen that it should be very realistic. I took the help of a lot of my former teammates. But more importantly, it was so easy working with SRK. He is unbelievably modest and was willing to do as many re-takes as we wanted."[27]
Chak De! India was filmed in India and Australia. The Australian portions were filmed in Sydney and Melbourne and used 90 hockey players cast by ReelSports Solutions and 9000 extras.[28]
[edit] Chak De girls
Shortly after the film's release, the media began referring to the 16 actresses who portrayed members of the team as the Chak De girls. [29][30] The panel of judges at the Star Screen Awards also used this term when they awarded the 2008 Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress to the Chak De girls. [31]
- Aliya Bose (Anaitha Nair), senior player, from West Bengal.
- Balbir Kaur (Tanya Abrol), from Punjab.
- Bindia Naik (Shilpa Shukla), senior player from Maharashtra. As the most experienced member of the team, Bindia is condescending towards everyone but her two best friends, Alia and Gunjun. She attempts to overthrow Khan after he refuses to give her power equal to her experience.
- Gul Iqbal (Arya Menon), from Uttar Pradesh
- Gunjun Lakhani (Shubhi Mehta), senior player from Andhra Pradesh.
- Komal Chautala (Chitrashi Rawat), from Haryana. Komal's character is based on Mamta Kharab, the current captain of the Indian Women's Hockey Team.[32]

- Molly Zimik (Masochon "Chon Chon" Zimik), from Manipur. Mary and Molly are from North-East India and are initially treated as "foreign" by their teammates.

[edit] Release
[edit] Box office
Chak De! India was released worldwide on 10 August 2007. It became the third top grossing movie of 2007 in India, with revenues of Rs 67,69,00,000 domestically,[11] and was declared a "Blockbuster."[11] In the U.S, it opened at number 20, in the UK charts at number 11, and in Australia at number 12.[33] It earned a total Rs 35 million in the United Kingdom, Rs 47.5 million in North America, and Rs 35 million for the rest of the overseas proceeds.[34]
[edit] Critical reception
The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave Chak De! India a rating of 80%, based upon 5 reviews (4 fresh and 1 rotten).[35]
Chak De! India was critically acclaimed in India and abroad. Subhash K. Jha (film critic and author of The Essential Guide to Bollywood) gave the film a rave review stating, "First things first. Chak De India is an outright winner. A triumph of the spirit. And of craftsmanship. While director Shimit Amin has crafted a film with immense staying power , and exception integrity and gusto, the thought-process behind the endearing endeavour harks back to a series of well-crafted Hollywood films about the team spirit, the low-spirited tream and the burnt-out disgraced and exiled coach who motivates the team and galvanizes his own dormant spirit into a wide-alert status." [36] Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India gave the film 4 out of 4 stars and argues that it has "great performances by a bunch of unknowns, a gritty pace and a marvellous restraint make Chakde India an unbridled ode to patriotism without any hysterical chest-beating. And yes, for all you SRK fans and bashers, this time the verdict gotta be unanimous: Chakde Shah Rukh! Can you better this?"[3] India Today describes Chak De! India as, "the most feisty girl power movie to have come out of Bollywood ever. The girls, from the truculent Haryanvi Komal to the angry Bindiya, from the Punjabi Balbir to the very proper Punjabi, Chandigarh ki kudi Preeti, may be drawn from stereotypes but they shatter them with aggressive performances, staring Khan in the eye, almost defeating the Indian men's hockey team, assaulting a gang of boys and showing the six-time Australian team a thing or two about how to win." [37] Sudhish Kamath of The Hindu asks "when did we last make a solid ensemble film about sports — one that's not about a few players saving the day but about the triumph of teamwork? 'Chak De' is that rare film where the hero watches from the stands and lets a bunch of 'what's-her-name-again' girls do all the winning [...] At another level, 'Chak De' is about women's liberation. It is one of the best feminist films of our times. Next, the girls themselves are the closest we've seen to a representation of India in any sports movie we've seen. They are not 16 pretty young things. The casting is first-rate. The rawness in the performances actually makes you forget these are actors. Though we begin by warming up to the ethnic/race differences among the players, soon enough, Amin skirts their inter-racial conflicts behind the uniform, the great leveller."[38]
Anil Sinanan of The Times adds that, "First time director Shimit Amin has fashioned a gripping film: we keep rooting for our girls even though it is fairly obvious what the final result will be. This is achieved via a script which eliminates most of the usual trappings of the formula, and focuses on the game. Romance is absent, parents are sidelined and no one breaks out into song and dance, Lagaan-style whilst training."[2] Jaspreet Pandohar of The BBC gave Chak De! India 4 out of 5 stars stating that, "while the tale of the sporting underdog is hardly new, Jaideep Sahni's screenplay offers a rare look at a popular Indian sport often overshadowed by cricket. But it's not the type of bat and ball, or the number of practice sessions that are at issue here. Instead, the gender and personal prejudices of the players underpin the story."[39] Andy Webster of The New York Times argues that the film gave a fresh look to the conventional underdog sports film and compared the premise to the win at the FIFA Women's World Cup.[40] Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter argues that the film is "definitely Bollywood, ashamed of neither sentimentality nor predictability. Yet its sharp-eyed view of Indian society makes for a world of difference from old-style, sugar-coated Bollywood films."[41] Derek Elley of Variety describes the film as "a patriotic heartwarmer that scores some old-fashioned entertainment goals" and that it "is almost an anthem for India's new-found economic clout and its recent 60th-anniversary celebrations of independence from U.K. rule -- and it gets a stirring title song from composing team Salim-Sulaiman and lyricist Jaideep Sahni (who also scripted). Thus, it's hardly a surprise when the team of 16 girls from all over India finally get it together to beat the bejeezus out of their international opponents." [42] Apart from critics, Chak De! India tied with Taare Zameen Par for best film of 2007 according to various Bollywood movie directors such as Madhur Bhandarkar, David Dhawan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Anurag Basu, and Sriram Raghavan.[12]
On 30 August 2007, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences requested a copy of the Chak De! India script for a place in the Margaret Herrick library.[43]
[edit] Awards
Chak De! India has won numerous awards including eight for Best Film from: The Apsara Film & Television Producers Guild, The Australian Indian Film Festival, The Billie Awards, The International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), The Star Screen Awards, The UNFPA-Laadli Media Awards, The V. Shantaram Awards, and The Zee Cine Awards. It also received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.[13]
[edit] Special screenings
Chak De! India was screened on 30 May 2009 at the opening of the SPAR Cup in Durban, South Africa in order to welcome the Indian Women's National Field Hockey Team.[44] The SPAR Cup is a lead up to the 2009 Hockey Champions Challenge in October. India competed against three other teams: Hockeyroos, Las Leonas, and the South African Women's National Field Hockey Team.[45]
[edit] Impact
[edit] Suspension of IHF
The suspension of the Indian Hockey Federation in April 2008 emphasized the film's influence. India Today used the film to label the event in two articles titled, "Operation Chak De impact: Jothikumaran resigns" [46] and "Operation Chak de impact: Furore in Lok Sabha."[47] The Indiatimes, in an article titled, "Five wise men set for a 'Chak De' act" also argued, "It looks like Indian hockey has done a real 'Chak de' this time around."[48] In addition, former hockey player, Aslam Sher Khan, who was appointed by the Indian Olympic Association to head a committee which will replace the IHF, pointed to the film as a model to work towards. He stated in an interview, "We have to make a Team India as you have seen in bollywood blockbuster Chak De! India. There are players from several parts of the country. We have to unite them to make a powerful force." [14] In another interview, he emphasized that he wants "to create a Chak De effect" on hockey in India.[49]

Sex Scandal Hits Women's Field Hockey
By Vibhuti Agarwal
India's national sport has been rocked by fresh controversy after a member of the women's national field hockey team complained to the sport's leading body about alleged sexual harassment by the coaching staff.
- AFP/Getty Images
- Members of the national women hockey team wear black bands as a mark of protest against the delay in payment of their dues during a practice session in Bhopal on January 21, 2010.
Narinder Batra, the secretary general of Hockey India – the sport's governing body here — told India Real Time Wednesday that a videographer for the Indian women's hockey team was sacked following allegations of sexual exploitation against him, chief coach M. K. Kaushik and other members of the support staff.
Mr. Batra explained that the decision was taken by Hockey India's four-member panel constituted after a national team player, Ranjitha Devi, accused the entire backroom staff of pressurizing team members for sexual favors.
In the wake of the accusations, Mr. Kaushik, the chief coach, has submitted his resignation and also withdrawn himself from the Asian Champions Trophy in South Korea that begins July 27, Mr. Batra said. Mr. Kaushik could face a life ban from the sports if the allegations prove true. He could not be reached for comment.
This is not the first time the country's national sport has been making headlines for the wrong reasons. In January this year, the national 22-man hockey squad had boycotted training in the western city of Pune over demands that they be paid for past victories and strong performances in competitions and international matches.
The crisis threatened to embarrass India for the hockey World Cup that was held in New Delhi in February and for the Commonwealth Games in the capital later this year. Their demand, however, was met by the field-hockey authorities after Indian conglomerate Sahara India, which sponsors the team, said it would release $200,000 to be distributed among the striking players.
Women's hockey traditionally has had a much lower profile. But the women's sport shot to prominence with the Bollywood film Chak de India, released in 2007, starring Shahrukh Khan. But the scandal threatens to undermine the gains in the sport's popularity that the film – a feel-good tale about an Indian women's hockey squad – brought to the sport.
"It is a shameful chapter in Indian hockey," said Mr. Batra.
Mr. Batra said he received an unidentified email last week alleging that a team videographer on tours of China and Canada brought girls to his hotel room. The email also accused other staff members of seeking favors from women hockey players.
"I must talk to the coach and the girl who has made the allegations of sexual harassment separately," Vidya Stokes, the president of Hockey India, told television news channels Wednesday. "The assistant coach will travel with the team in the meantime. Hopefully, everything would be sorted out soon," Ms. Stokes said.
K.P.S. Gill, the former chief of the now-defunct India Hockey Federation, told India Real Time that a police case should be registered and a wide-ranging inquiry should be held. "Only one lady has complained so far; others will also come out if they are assured of justice," he said.
A New Delhi-based hockey writer, K. Arumugam, said the controversy saying it is a setback to women's hockey — a sport that has been played in India since the early 1920s. In 1948, the All India Women Hockey Federation was formed and the team entered the international arena in 1950s.
"This sends a wrong message throughout the country," Mr. Arumugam said. "No one will send their daughters to play hockey for the country."

[edit] Hockey India
Hockey India is the governing body of hockey in India. It was formed after Indian Hockey Federation was dismissed in April 2009 by Indian Olympic Association. International Hockey Federation has planned to host 2010 Men's Hockey World Cup in India in Delhi and said that India may lose it if it does not form its governing body in hockey. Therefore Hockey India was formed
[edit] New Committee (IOA)
The Indian Olympic Association appointed a new five-member national selection committee. This panel will work in conjunction with the International Hockey Federation in managing hockey in India.[2] The panel was headed by Aslam Sher Khan, a former MP and former hockey captain and includes Ashok Kumar, Ajit Pal Singh, Zafar Iqbal and Dhanraj Pillay. Aslam Sher Khan has now been replaced by Ajit Pal Singh as the chairman of the national selection committee. Aslam Sher Khan was highly displeased by this decision, though he remained as a selector.[3][4]
In a 30 April 2008 interview with India Today, Khan indicated the impact of the 2007 film about the National Women's Hockey Team, Chak De India, on his future strategy by stating that he wants "to create a 'Chak De' effect" within Indian hockey.[5]

[edit] National men's team
The Indian Hockey Team is the national men's hockey team of India. It was the first non-European team to be a part of the International Hockey Federation. In 1928, the team won its first Olympic gold medal. From 1928 to 1956, the Indian men's team remained unbeaten in the Olympics, garnering six gold medals in a row. The Indian team has won a total of eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Olympics.
On 9 March 2008, India lost 2-0 to Britain at Santiago, Chile in the final of one of the three qualifying tournaments for the Beijing Olympics. With only the winner advancing to the 12-team event,[6] the Indian men's team was eliminated from the Beijing Olympics competition. This is the first time that the Indian men's team did not participate in the Olympics since 1928.[7]

The Indian Women's Hockey Team is the national women's team representing hockey in India. Captain Suraj Lata Devi led the team to the Gold for three consecutive years: during the 2002 Commonwealth Games (the event which inspired the 2007 Bollywood hit film, Chak De India), the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, and the 2004 Hockey Asia Cup. They were referred to as the "Jassi (Jasjeet) jaisi koi nahi" or "Golden girls of hockey," after winning the 2004 Hockey Asia Cup.[8]
On 24 April 2008, India lost 2-1 to the United States during the 2008 Women's Field Hockey Olympic Qualifier. The team was thus eliminated from the Beijing Olympics competition. On 29 April 2008, following the suspension of the Indian Hockey Federation, [9] The Hindustan Times revealed that 16 days before leaving for the games, a report found many of the players to be unfit for international competition. The report was quoted as stating, "Eleven girls are suffering from different injuries and are under treatment and thus not fit for international competition of Olympic qualifying standards." [10] On June 27, 2009, India became the first winner of the women's Champions Challenge II in hockey history after they defeated Belgium 6-3 in the final in Kazan, Russia.[11]
