Chidambaram says Railway Ministry's response to Sainthia train crash slow!Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday said relief teams reached the site of the train accident in West Bengal several hours late as they had to travel a long distance by road and suggested the use of helicopters and small planes. Addressing a meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority
(NDMA) in New Delhi, Chidmabaram said he was told that the first batch of three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams could leave their base only two-and-a-half hours after the accident that occurred at around 2 am.The second batch of two teams could leave only seven hours late, Chidambaram said adding that the relief teams had to drive 220 km.

Mamata being the most Convincing Human Face of economic ethnc cleansing, it is well understanable that the UPA should defend her follies and faults! Pranab Mukherjee is well fit in this distinct Role. Hoever,Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday accused the Railway Ministry of responding slowly to Monday's train collision at Sainthia station in West Bengal.Ridiculing West Bengal's ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front for demanding her resignation in the wake of the Sainthia train accident, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday again hinted at a conspiracy behind the tragedy.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today suggested CPI(M)'s hand in the train accident in Sainthia and the Jnaneswari Express mishap and ruled out resigning on moral grounds.
"I am prepared to resign if the CPI(M) guarantees that it will not indulge in sabotage," she said slamming the Marxists for demanding her resignation in the wake of Monday's accident in Birbhum district which left 66 persons dead.
Banerjee, who had resigned twice earlier as union minister, said people were ringing her up to tell her not to walk into CPI(M)'s trap by quitting.
"They have been planning sabotage. They are trying to ruin the (reputation of) Railways by letting cockroaches into food.
It is time for the CPI(M) to go. The Jnaneswari Express accident took place on May 28 two before the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections," she pointed out.
Banerjee was addressing her party's mammoth Martyr's Day rally organised in the memory of 13 Youth Congress workers killed in a police firing here on this day in 1993.
"The accident at Sainthia occurred on July 19 before our Martyr's Day rally today. Both took place around 2:00 am. Many people were killed. This should be probed. The CBI is investigating the earlier accident.
"They (Marxists) are not planning development, but opening clips on tracks. Some comrades are drawing up scientific plans. After the Jnaneswari (accident) they strung up a poster claiming that it was an accident. Who were behind it should be investigated. It is sabotage," she said.
'The Gyaneshwari Express tragedy happened May 28, two days before the Kolkata civic polls. I went to the spot and learnt certain things about who is behind this. Now the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting a probe,' Banerjee told a huge rally in the heart of the city.
'Again two days before our July 21 rally, the Sainthia train accident happened. Both incidents happened around the same time - 2 a.m. Investigation is on regarding the Sainthia disaster. So I won't say anything. But comrades, do you think we eat grass?' she asked.
The Trinamool Congress leader said if people wanted her to resign, she would do that in two minutes.
'But the more the CPI-M demands my resignation, I get more phone calls from people urging me not to fall into the CPI-M trap. They plead with me not to resign,' she said.
Banerjee said she had earlier twice resigned from the union ministry.
'But in 2001, I lost the assembly polls only because I had resigned as railway minister. People did not like it. People still remember this. And they continue to ask me why should I resign.
'Now the CPI-M wants my resignation. They did not resign when they killed 60,000 opposition workers during their 33-year rule. Their only activity is now centred around creating problems for me. They are allergic to me,' Banerjee said.
The minister said the CPI-M was now on its last legs and it was time for the Communists to go. 'No amount of conspiracy can keep them in power,' she said.
She said that while CPI-M leaders made crores worth of property during their long innings in West Bengal, she does not even drink a cup of tea using railway money.
'They have beaten me up so many times. Now they are trying to damage the railways. They cannot do it. They themselves will suffer,' she said.
Banerjee said she could not sleep for the last two days due to the rail accident. 'I have fever also.'
Over 200 people have been killed in West Bengal in two train tragedies in less than two months.
At least 148 were killed May 28 when the Mumbai-bound Gyaneshwari Express derailed after a Maoist sabotage and was hit by a freight train near Jhargram in West Midnapore district.
Sixtysix people were killed when the engine of the Sealdah-bound Uttar Banga Express ploughed through three compartments of the stationary Vananchal Express at Sainthia station early Monday.
Mamata accuses CPM of 'scientific rail sabotage'
CNN-IBNPosted on Jul 21, 2010 at 18:11 | Updated Jul 21, 2010 at 18:19
Kolkata: Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has blamed Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) for both the Gyaneshwari Express and Sainthia rail disasters.
Addressing the martyr's day rally organised in the memory of 13 Youth Congress workers killed in a police firing in Kolkata on this day in 1993, Mamata targeted her opponents who have been asking her to choose between Railways and West Bengal politics and claimed that CPI-M activists were scientifically planning to sabotage railways.
"On May 30 the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections took place and on May 28 CPI-M orchestrated the Gyaneshwari train accident. The locals told me the CPI-M is behind it, the CBI probe is on. The accident at Sainthia occurred on July 19 before our Martyr's Day rally today. Both took place around 2:00 am. Many people were killed. This should be probed. The CBI is investigating the earlier accident. They (Marxists) are notplanning development, but opening clips on tracks. Some comrades are drawing up scientific plans. After the Gyaneshwari (accident) they strung up a poster claiming that it was an accident. Who were behind it should be investigated. It is sabotage," she said.

New Delhi/Kolkata: Congress president Sonia Gandhi expressed "her deep grief and anguish" over the train tragedy in West Bengal and wished speedy recovery to the injured.
A statement from All India Congress Committee (AICC) said, "While conveying her deep condolences to the bereaved families, she also wished speedy recovery for the injured."
RJD chief Lalu Prasad said, "It's unfortunate that incidents like these are happening so often. Utmost caution is needed and adequate compensation must be given."
"I don't understand why such accidents are taking place," Prasad said. "This is a sad incident and a serious lapse." Prasad, however, parried a question about allegations that Mamata was concentrating onWest Bengal politics ignoring her department.
Lok Jan Shakti party president Ram Vilas Pawswan was more scathing in his attack on Mamata. He said, "No Maoist attack, nothing. It's happened because of Railway's negligence. Mamata has to decide her priorities - whether it'sWest Bengal or Railways. This attitude can not go on." The former Railway Minister demanded a judicial probe into the incident.
BJP raised eyebrows about the capability and willingness of Mamata in providing safety to passengers and suggested that if she continued to use her office for playing politics inWest Bengal she should be made "minister without portfolio".
"Mamata Banerjee should concentrate on Railways. If she is using the Railways as a platform for politics in West Bengal, it is better to make her a minister without portfolio," BJP spokesperson Tarun Vijay said.
Five major train accidents have taken place since Banerjee took over as the Railway Minister in 2009. When asked if BJP would demand her resignation, the spokesperson said at the moment the party only wanted an inquiry into the latest incident.
CPI(M) leader Basudeb Acharya in Kolkata accused Mamata of not taking "any initiative" to maintain and modernise the public transport service.
"Maintenance is not done properly. The Railway Minister has no time for this and has not taken any initiative," said Acharya, a former chairman of the railway standing committee and party leader in Lok Sabha.
He claimed that work on upgrading the signal system in the route where the accident took place had come to a halt for a year now and the old system was still in place. He also said that there was shortage of staff and vacancies were not filled up in the Railways. There was also delay in beginning rescue work at Sainthia.

Indians those who are not communists do not have any idea of West Bengal Communism. Innocent Indians can not feel the horrible days and nights through which Nandigram residents passed. The communists can do anything for political power. They will not allow the power to be snatched from them. The time has come which Bengalis have anticipated long back. Entire West Bengal will be on fire. Innocent people will be lynched to death openly in the streets by communists workers. Law and Order will fail completely till the the election result is declared and CPM voted out of power. Immediate President rule is the only answer.

Completely agreed with the point. Mamata Banerjee should be made central minister without portfolios. She has no time for the Rail Ministry, as she is pre-occupied with the politics in West Bengal.

I would say she is not fit for either of them, not for Bengal Politics & not for Railways. She should take retirement instead of holding any other portfolio.

its a pity that even today the lives of the thousands of people traveling in a train are on the mercy of the driver. There is no technology being used or system in place to avoid such disasters if the driver is not cautious. How can this go on like this ?
Though I say this, but I really doubt that this is the case. There must be some other reasons, such as mistakes by more than just the driver which caused this incident. Why the other train came on the same track when the other train was yet to leave ? Who gave this permission ? The station master must be asked these questions and be held responsible if proven guilty.

Those that criticise must have an alternative to solve the problem. In a cauldron like India where the government has a responsibility to offer cheap rail travel to the masses, events like these do happen. Privatisation of the railways is a good idea and one can expect efficiency. Efficiency needs new equipment and money and moreover the number of trains will have to be curtailed to give breathing space so that trains that run far in between will have clear lines and fewer stops to be on time. All these costs money and tickets and tariffs will have to be doubled or tripled. In such a situation the poor will be marginalised and will suffer. I will agree that madam Banerjee has taken too much in her plate and she will have to guide her party to victory over the Communists in Bengal. I think that this is more important a task for her and the Union goberment than the Railway Ministry : at least for the moment. Our sympathies from Oz goes to all that had lost their loved ones in this catastrophe and may they find comfort in this their hour of grief. E&OE

Chidambaram said the first relief train after the Sainthia accident reached the site two and a half hours late. The second relief train was late by seven hours.
Chidambaram said there was a clear gap of mobility in case of the disaster relief teams. While the home minister did not name Mamata, the reference was obvious.
"So we need to increase our capacity to be able to move disaster relief teams quickly, which means perhaps helicopters and small planes. All this would cost money," he said.
Sixty-three people were killed and over 150 people injured early Monday when the engine of the Uttar Banga Express ploughed through three compartments of the stationary Vananchal Express at Sainthia station in West Bengal's Birbhum district.
Chidambaram said that in the past one-and-a-half years, the capacity to deal with natural disasters like floods, cyclone and fires have "vastly improved". "But there are some other cases (accidents), I think our response should be better."
"More lives are being saved, more relief and aid are being rushed to the affected people" in the recent past, he said.
In case of natural disasters, the situation has been brought under control within a few days, he said. "I compliment the NDMA and the NDRF for this improvement," Chidambaram said.
A home ministry spokesperson, meanwhile, said Chidambaram had not criticised the railway ministry for any delay in relief operations but was only pointing out that the NDRF teams arrived late because of their journey by road.
The spokesperson said there was "no basis" for politicising the issue.
The accident caused the death of over 66 people and injuries to over 90.
G7 task force asks Indian neighbours to check terror financing
A global task force, which tracks money laundering and terrorist financing across national borders, has advised India's neighbours including Pakistan to improve legal measures to curb the criminalisation of its financial channels. India is the latest member of the multi-national Financial Action
Task Force (FATF), an inter-governmental organisation founded in 1989 by the G7 (Group of seven industrialised nations) to develop policies to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.
"From India's point of view these recommendations by the powerful world financial body to India's neighbours is important as it will ensure a better and criminal free financial hub and network around the burgeoning economic power like us," a senior Revenue department official said.
"In June 2010, Pakistan made a high-level political commitment to work with the FATF and Asia Pacific Group (APG) to address its strategic Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating Financing of Terror (CFT) deficiencies.
"Pakistan has demonstrated progress in improving its AML and CFT regime, including enacting a permanent AML law. However, the FATF has determined that certain strategic AML and CFT deficiencies remain," the FATF said in its recommendations to the Islamic Republic nation.
Pakistan will work on implementing its action plan to address these deficiencies, including demonstrating adequate criminalisation of money laundering and terrorist financing, demonstrating adequate procedures to identify, freeze and confiscate terrorist assets, ensuring a fully operational and effectively functioning Financial Intelligence Unit.
The other measures that Pakistan need to work on, according to FATF, include "demonstrating effective regulation of money service providers, including an appropriate sanctions regime, and increasing the range of Money Laundering and Financing of Terror preventive measures for these services and improving and implementing effective controls for cross-border cash transactions."
India had successfully demonstrated these steps to combat criminalisation of money in it's financial channels during FATF's on-site visit to the country last year following which India became the 34th member of the body last month at Amsterdam.
The FATF has recommended similar measures for Indian neighbours like Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Nepal.
"The FATF encourages Pakistan to address its remaining deficiencies and continue the process of implementing its action plan," the body recommended.
The other prominent countries who have been suggested to work on their action plans include Indonesia, Thailand, Kenya, Morocco, Syria, Ecuador, Greece, Bolivia, Ethiopia and Turkey among others.
Mamata is 'politicking' over serious accident: CPI(M)
Castigating Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee for floating the "conspiracy" theory on the Sainthia train crash, CPI(M) today said the Trinamool Congress chief was trying to absolve herself of her responsibilities and "politicking" over a serious mishap. Pointing out that even Home Minister P
Chidambaram has regretted the enormous delay in rescue and relief teams reaching the accident site, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said "we too have been wanting to know for a long time what happened to the high-speed crane trains which should reach accident sites very fast".
"The delay in relief teams reaching the site has caused the loss of several lives. And instead, (Mamata) is floating the conspiracy theory. The Home Minister has for the second time wanted to know why there was a delay in relief and rescue operations," he said in response to questions.
Questions need to be asked as to where these crane trains were located and why was there a "major delay" in relief trains reaching the site, he said.
Earlier on Thursday, Home Minister P Chidambaram said he was informed that the first relief team left for the site about two and half hours after the accident and the second team could leave only seven hours later.
Asked about Union Minister Mukul Roy reportedly charging the CPI(M) with "scientific killing", Yechury said "it is not only ridiculous but absurd. We cannot stoop to that level. We are studying the question of privilege as such a public statement has come from a member of the Union Council of Ministers".
He said during the Jnaneshwari accident, Mamata had first spoken of a bomb explosion which was refuted by the Home Ministry. "She is politicking over a grave tragedy. She is not only doing a disservice to the nation, but to the Constitution as well on which she has taken oath".
Yechury said the Trinamool Congress has been "adopting such tactics to cover-up their misdoings and absolve themselves by making such wild allegations".
Referring to TC leaders' statements that the Jnaneshwari accident had taken place days ahead of the civic polls to indicate "conspiracy", the CPI(M) leader said "but who gained these elections? It was the Trinamool. So, the needle of suspicion should be on them."
Yechury had earlier asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to "take a call" on the issue of railway safety over an unprecedented number of train accidents and charged Banerjee with being "highly irresponsible" for suggesting sabotage behind the Sainthia accident.
"You have a Minister whose attention is elsewhere and the country is paying the price for that," he had said, adding "this is something which cannot be accepted in the collective responsibility of the Cabinet. The Prime Minister has to take a call".
The Human Face of UPA, Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Wednesday said she would request Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop the anti-Maoist joint operation in West Bengal as the state's ruling Left Front was using this to regain its politcal turf in the affected areas.
'I will meet the prime minister and appeal to him. He is a good man. I hope he will listen to me,' Banerjee said while addressing a mammoth Trinamool rally in the city hub.
She alleged that the state's ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) was utilising the joint operation in three Maoist-hit districts to regain its political turf in the area.
'I request the central government to stop the joint operation. The CPI-M is fulfilling its own political agenda by using the presence of the joint forces. In the name of the joint operations, policemen and tribal men and women are being murdered. We are not going to tolerate this,' she said.
Banerjee accused CPI-M ministers of opening arms camps in the Maoist-infested areas. 'I ask the CPI-M leaders whether they have opened arms camps at places like Goaltore and Salboni (of West Midnapore district)? If they can prove that I am lying, I will send my resignation from the railways ministry to them,' she said.
On June 18 last year, central paramilitary troopers and crack units of the West Bengal Police launched a joint anti-Maoist campaign aimed at freeing Lalgarh and its surrounding areas in West Midnapore district from the Left-wing rebels. In the second stage, the operation has been expanded to two other districts of Bankura and Purulia.
The Trinamool Congress, the second largest partner in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) central government, has been staunchly opposing the joint operation from the outset.
Banerjee also announced that her party would take out a march to Lalgarh Aug 9, urging people to oust the CPI-M led Left Front and appeal for restoration of peace.
PTI reports:
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee appealed to the Centre to halt anti-Maoist operations in the state, alleging that the ruling CPI(M) was "conducting its own operation" in its garb.
"I urge the Centre to stop the joint-operations because in its name, the CPI(M) is conducting its own operations. I will meet Prime Minister Mammohan Singh and appeal to him. He is a good man. I believe he will listen," Ms. Banerjee told a rally here.
The rally was held to mark 'Martyrs Day' to commemorate the 13 Youth Congress workers killed in police firing on this day in 1993. Ms. Banerjee was the Youth Congress president at the time.
Atrocities were being committed on tribals in the name of joint-operations at the behest of the CPI(M), she alleged.
The CPI(M) was supplying arms to party cadres in the name of joint-operations and setting up camps in Lalgarh and Salboni to terrorise people, Ms. Banerjee claimed.
Agencies report:
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday suggested CPI(M)'s hand in the train accident in Sainthia and the Jnaneswari Express mishap and ruled out resigning on moral grounds. "I am prepared to resign if the CPI(M) guarantees that it will not indulge in sabotage," she said slamming

Mamata should go
The early morning railway disaster at Sainthia in West Bengal that has left scores dead and many more critically injured may have been just an accident. However, it's still too early to be certain, as there are some unanswered questions and the Railways will conduct an investigation. But it's unlikely this tragedy will draw parallels with intentional damage as the Jnaneswari Express was sub-ject to last May. From the face of it, it looks like a human error — the driver of the Uttarbanga Express overshooting a signal, failing to slow down and ramming into the rear of the other train. That the trains were on the same track will also come under the scanner. The issue at hand, therefore, is not one single accident but the spate of railway accidents we've witnessed for a year, the conduct of the Union railway minister and a particular kind of politics that remains her trademark.Despite the ambitions of the railway budget, albeit much of it, as argued in these columns, misdirected, little has changed in the ground reality of railway services and passenger safety. Long-awaited technological upgrade vis-a-vis signalling and track maintenance hasn't come about, nor has a blueprint for minimising human error — something no large-scale public transportation service can altogether avoid. As India's largest single employer and a behemoth ferrying dependent passengers to and from every corner of this vast country, the Indian Railways are distinctly not a 21st century public utility. And having a railway minister at the helm least interested in her charge, engaged as she is in securing the political ground in her home state, only makes matters worse. (And you can only wonder how her constituents see her administrative skills.)
Which brings us to the inevitable — politics, Mamata Banerjee-style. Once again, the railway minister has irresponsibly hinted at conspiracy, as she had, more vehemently, after the Jnaneswari disaster. Hers is a brand of politics that confines itself to muckraking and name-calling, high-pitched rhetoric and shoddy public spectacles. Without any trace of substance, programme and delivery. She doesn't appreciate that Indian politics moved on long ago, and that she's a relic, albeit a unique relic. Her flawed response to the latest disaster is simply confirmation that the Railways cannot afford her at the helm.

17 opposition legislators suspended in Bihar
Seventeen opposition legislators were Wednesday suspended for unruly behaviour in the Bihar assembly while demanding Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's resignation over financial irregularities.Speaker Uday Narain Choudhary suspended the 17, mostly from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), a day after bedlam gripped the house was plunged into .
The assembly opened at 11 a.m. after being adjourned Tuesday afternoon following clashes between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and opposition members.
The opposition members trooped towards the speaker, shouted slogans against their suspension and demanded the resignation of Nitish Kumar.
The suspension will remain effective during the ongoing monsoon session till July 24.
Nitish Kumar's anti-BJP stunts to woo Muslim & Dalit votes may backfire in Bihar
In "Hindu India", everything is caste-based. Since politics is the essence of public life, everything under the election-based politics is also determined by caste.Did we not say that Caste is the life-breath of India? Read our book, Caste — A Nation Within the Nation, (Books for Change, 2002, Bangalore. For copies of the English, Hindi and Kannada version write to DV office. Rs. 140 each).
The tiny Kurmi jati OBC leader, Nitish Kumar, has been getting raving reviews in even foreign media about his "great development" efforts — of course after he buttered the Brahmins who started loving the OBC leader only after joining hands with their own Brahmana Jati Party (BJP).
Heartland of Budhism: But false media reports painting a rosy picture will not please the oppressed 90% of Bihar — perhaps the country's most backward state.
Once the heartland of Budhism, the ruthless upper castes crushed the backbone of the SC/ST/BCs for having fought Budhism. But after they failed to save Budhism, they enbloc became Muslims to continue their fight. The fight is continuing because the war against Brahminism is never ending.
The latest game played by Nitish Kumar is to woo the state's massive 17% Muslim who have totally deserted him.
Lalu cheats Bahujans: The oppressed Bahujans of Bihar once found a liberator in Lalu Prasad Yadav. We too met him in Patna, when as Chief Minister he was thrown into jail, to offer our support. But once the Yadav leader started flirting with the serpent, the oppressed Bahujans deserted him and he fell from grace.
Bihar continues to be one of the poorest states of India but blessed with a fertile soil, plentiful Ganga water, and every input. But Biharis are today fleeing to Calcutta, Bombay and lately Bangalore. A micro-minority of upper castes — Brahmins, Thakurs, Bhumihars — are ruthlessly ruling Bihar. Strangely, Baniyas in Bihar are backward.
Narendra Modi a liability: Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister, whose visit to Bihar provoked the current Bihar turmoil. Modi a Ganchi, an oil-crushing OBC fellow, is a liability to the party itself outside Gujarat. The Teli with hardly any caste strength did a magic in Gujart by hinduising (enslaving) Dalits and Triblas and using them to kill Muslims in the famous Gujarat Genocide -2002. With the solid support of the Dalits and Tribals, he crushed Muslims to please the Gujarat's powerful ruling castes — Brahmins, Banias and Patels — whom he made powerless. But this caste experiment cannot be launched in Bihar.
The Brahminical upper castes are using Nitish to outwit the populous Muslims and Yadavas but he cannot conduct this experiment as his own caste is a poor minority. Brahminical media gave him a big media build-up but one single rain washed out all the paint on his face.
Irshadul Haque adds from Patna: The present political game, being played by Nitish Kumar (Kurmi) and his political ally, the BJP, is nothing but a pressure tactic. After four and half years in power, Nitish is now thinking that he is the champion of Bihar politics and that only he can mobilize the masses. The "political turmoil" created by him is a part of his game plan. After the swabhiman rally of BJP in Patna, Nitish successfully tarnished BJP. He said BJP tried to malign his "secular figure" by publishing a photograph of Nitish holding his hand with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in local dailies. Consequently he also returned Rs. 5 crore, the aid given by the Modi Govt. during Kosi flood in Bihar in 2008. In fact, these are part of a game being played by JDU and BJP before the forthcoming assembly election in Oct.-Nov.2010.
Wooing Muslims: Nitish thinks this game can target both Lalu Prasad as well as the BJP. By returning the money to Narendra Modi and asking him not to come to Bihar for election campaign, Nitish wants to woo the 17% (1.4 crores) Muslims of Bihar. If the Muslims are polarized against Lalu then not only his party will enjoy Muslim support but also can get full majority. There are at least 60 out of the 243 Assembly seats where Muslims are dominant in Bihar. Secondly, he is also trying to put pressure on BJP that he can take credit for proving Narendra Modi as the Muslim Enemy No.1 as Lalu did it earlier by arresting L.K. Advani for his rath yatra (1990-91). After arresting Advani, Lalu got full support of Muslims.
Pasmanda gains upper hand: But it must be remembered that the year 2010 is not 1990. After 20 years political situation has changed. Now the Pasmanda Muslim movement has emerged as a major force in Bihar. Pasmanda Muslims are able to understand that "communalism" is not an issue on which they can be fooled. They know that (1) employment and (2) education are the main concern of Muslims. So Nitish is day -dreaming for his vote in the name of Narendra Modi.
Caste-based politics in Bihar has been a major factor in election. Nitish is a Kurmi which is only 3% of the population while Yadavs are 12%.
Upper caste revolt: In such a situation Nitish cannot do any magic in Bihar unless he gets support of the upper castes. But here also Nitish faces a revolt by two major upper castes. Bhumihar (3%) and Rajput also about 3% are against Nitish. His party state president, Lalan Singh, a Bhumihar leader, resigned from the party post and started Kisan Mahapanchayat against Nitish. Digvijay Singh, a Rajput and rebel JDU leader, successfully contested a parliamentary election as an independent and against Nitish. And the third dominant caste leader, Prabhunath Singh, also an MP, went against Nitish, At least six JD(U) MLAs joined Prabhunath Singh, a dominant muscleman of the Rajput caste.
Anti-Lalu wave: Only the 2.5% Brahmins have not taken their sword openly against him. But generally Brahmins have never been directly associated with the JDU. They have been the supporters of either BJP or the Congress. Nitish media management has been very strong. With Bhumihars against him, he might now lose the support of Bhumihar-dominated media.
Maha Dalit Commission: Nitish has never enjoyed the full support of any caste. He was riding on the anti-Lalu Yadav wave.
However, he has been trying to divide the Dalit votes. The 15% Dalit votes have been with Lalu and Ram Vilas (LJP), to some extent with the BSP and left wing local parties. But over the past four years, Nitish, by creating the "Maha Dalit Commission", has tried to polarize Dalit vote minus Paswan and Chamar castes. These two castes have almost 65% votes of total Dalit votes.
But it is too early to say that "Maha Dalits" will support him. This time, neither Lalu nor Ram Vilas are going to commit the same mistake as they did in 2005. In 2005 Assembly election, Lalu and Ram Vilas contested separately. But now at least Lalu has given this message by sending Ram Vilas Paswan to the Rajya Sabha that they are going to contest together. And hence this time Nitish will see rough weather in assembly election.

THUS SPAKE AMBEDKAR
None can define what is Hinduism
Again if he said that he is a Hindu because he believes in the caste system his answer cannot be accepted as satisfactory. It is quite true that no Hindu is interested in what his neighbour believes, but he is very much interested in knowing whether he can eat with him or take water from his hands. In other words it means that the caste system is an essential feature of Hinduism and a man who does not belong to a recognized Hindu caste cannot be a Hindu. While all this is true it must not be forgotten that observance of caste is not enough. Many Musalmans and many Christians observe caste if not in the matter of inter-dining certainly in the matter of inter-marriage. But they cannot be called Hindus on that account. Both elements must be present. He must be a Hindu and he must also observe caste. This brings us back to the old question who is a Hindu? It leaves us where we are.Is it not a question for every Hindu to consider why in the matter of his own religion his position is so embarrassing and so puzzling? Why is he not able to answer so simple a question which every Parsi, every Christian, and every Muslim can answer? Is it not time that he should ask himself what are the causes that has brought about this religious chaos?
RIDDLE NO.2
THE ORIGIN OF THE VEDAS — THE BRAHMINIC EXPLANATION OR AN EXERCISE IN THE ART OF CIRCUMLOCUTION
There is hardly any Hindu who does not regard the Vedas as the most sacred Book of his religion. And yet ask any Hindu what is the origin of the Vedas and it would be difficult to find one who can give a clear and a definite answer to the simple question. Of course, if Vedas are sanatan. But this is no answer to the question. For first of all what does the word sanatan means? The best explanation of the word sanatan is to be found in the commentary by Kalluka Bhatt on Chapter 1 shlokas 22-23 of the Manu Smriti. This is what Kulluka Bhatta defines the word sanatan.
"The word sanatana he says, eternally pre-existing. The doctrine of the superhuman origin of the Vedas is maintained by Manu. The same Vedas with (existed) in the previous mundane era (Kalpa) were preserved in the memory of the omniscient Brahma, who was one with the supreme spirit. It was those same Vedas that, in the beginning of he present Kalpa, he drew forth from Agni, Vayu and Surya; and this dogma, which is founded upon the Veda, is not to be questioned, for the Veda says, the Rig Veda comes from Agni, the Yajur Veda from Vayu, and the Sama Veda from Surya."
To understand the explanation by Kulluka Bhatt it is necessary to explain what Kalpa means.
A Kalpa is a reckoning of time adopted by the Vedic Brahmins. The Brahminic reckoning of time divides time into (1) Varsha, (2) Yuga, (3) Mahayuga,(4) Manvantara and (5) Kalpa.
Varsha is easy enough to understand. It corresponds to the term year.
What exactly the period of time covered by the term Yuga coves there is no unanimity.
A Mahayuga is a period covered by a group of four yugas: (1) Krita Yuga, (2) Treta Yuga, (3) Dwapar Yuga and (4) Kali Yuga. The four Yugas follow one another in a cycle, when the period of the first Yuga is spent it is followed by the second and so on in the order given. When the cycle is complete one Mahayuga is completed and a new Mahayuga opens. Every Mahayuga begins with the Krita Yuga and ends with Kali Yuga.
There is no uncertainty as to the time relation of a Mahayuga and a Kalpa. 71 Mahayugas make one Kalpa. There is however some uncertainty as to the time relation between Mahayuga and Manvantara. A Manvantara is equal to 71 Mahayugas "and something more". What exact period of time that "something more" means, the Brahmins have not been able to state categorically. Consequently the time relation between Manvantara and Kalpa is uncertain.
But this does not matter very much for our present purposes. For the present it is enough to confine our attention to Kalpa. ( To be continued)

Brahma's lust for Parvati
MANU-DHARMA, A CODE OF INJUSTICE TO NON-BRAHMINS
Manu Dharma Sastra is the weapon of the "highest caste" Brahmins. It has two main motives. First of all this enables the Brahmins to call themselves most superior to other castes and lead a happy life without doing any manual work. It has made the sons of the soil (Dravidians) as slaves to them forever. The non-Brahmins are deprived of their self-respect and decency. The second motive is to render injustice to all Dravidians as stipulated in the Manu' law. When such an order is set up permanently, the organisations such as the government, courts, constitutional acts etc. would naturally be dominated and monopolised by the Brahmin community. Such an arrangement would render all others as slaves for ever. This is the other motive of the Manu's code.It was clearly ordained that Manu's code or law should be strictly followed for a period of three thousand years.
The sudra (Dravidians) kings and other rulers took pride in proclaiming that they ruled the people as laid down in the Manu law. Thus the Brahmins sought the necessary safeguards to maintain the evil of casteism attached to others by birth.
British rule: After the advent of the British rule, which succeeded the Tamil kings, the Brahmins permitted only the Criminal Acts to be changed on the lines of Western countries. For all civil matters, Hindu law based on Manu's code alone was brought into force.
Can there be a law like Manu's law that provides a very favourable position only to one particular community? How could it be tolerated with the authority of our own law of the land? How can we permit the courts and judges to base their judgement on Manu's code?
Is there a country where the people of the land are termed as the sons of prostitutes? Is there a place where the toiling masses of the land are degraded by others of alien countries? Can you find a government, legislations or courts remaining a silent spectator to the injustice meted out to the majority of the population? Can you see anywhere people being so docile and negligent as here without trying to erase the disgrace? Nowhere else you can find selfish vested interests as you see in Tamil Nadu.
It is for the Tamil society to think loftily. Our freedom and rights lie in the eradication of disgrace attached to our births. So I humbly appeal to you all to think over these monstrocities. You will feel perturbed and agitated at the ill treatment given to us by the Manu's code.
Leave the aged and elderly people. The future is in the hands of the younger generation. I have compiled this book with the hope that our youngsters atleast would come forward to think on right lines and act with wisdom.
The origin of Manu's code: Brahma has been attributed as the author of Manusmriti. He made laws and gave them to Brigu, a first saint. Later the law was handed over to Maricha by Brigu. (Vol.1, sloka 58, Manu code).
Later on Manusmriti (orthodox varnasrama dharma) was let known to all the saints.
Brahma's lust: (1) According to a fable of Hindu religion Brahma acted as a priest to officiate the marriage of god Paramasiva with Parvathi. When Parvathi went round the sacred fire (omakundam) she held the end of the apron cloth with her left hand before going round. It enabled Brahma to have a clear look at the Parvathi's thighs. On seeing the thighs, Brahma became a victim of lust. Brahma's semen poured out. Brahma left the semen in a vessel near the sacred fire. Immediately Agasthiar was born.
(2) When Parvathi came around the sacred fire again, Brahma once again relished her thighs and he once again became a victim to lust and semen poured out once again. This time he left the semen on the green plants, creepers and trees. This time a number of saints (rishis) were born in no time. Of them Valkilliyathe was one. (To be continued)

The Birbhum train accident in the early hours of Monday could have been avoided if the track along which the Vananchal Express entered the station had been unhinged from the main lines, making any other entry impossible. The process is called creating an "isolation point", and is mandatory.
related stories
It was the job of the Sainthia station personnel to put in place the "isolation point" to insulate the platform from any intrusion from behind, said loco-pilots and assistant loco-pilots of the Eastern Railways.
"The isolation of tracks is mandatory when any train — be it a mail train, passenger or goods train — enters a station," a train guard said.
Pilots and guards at Sealdah station (in Kolkata) were unanimous that if the isolation point had been created, the Uttarbanga Express, which hit the Vananchal Express from behind, would have been automatically diverted to another track.
"Even if the second train was travelling at 90 kmph, as has been alleged, at most it would have been derailed by taking a different track at the isolation point. In that case, the passengers would have escaped with minor injuries," said Shymal Kumar Mukherjee, a guard of the Sealdah division.

trying to wash its hands off Monday's accident with the Railway Board Chairman holding the driver of the Uttarbanga Express, which rammed into the Vananchal Express, responsible.
The Railway Board Chairman was told to say this to save the Railways, Hore alleged after he was allowed to raise the issue by Speaker H A Halim.
Claiming that neither Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee nor the Railway Board had discharged their responsibilities, he demanded that the Minister should resign owning moral responsibility for the accident.
Senior CPI(M) member Rabin Mondol said that 15 train accidents had taken place in the country in the past one year.
When the Railway Minister had visited Sainthia station on Monday, Mondol said, the people had raised slogans demanding her resignation.
Trinamool Congress members strongly protested this and alleged that the House was being used for political purposes to criticise the Railway Minister.

67 legislators suspended in Bihar
Patna: Sixty-seven opposition legislators were suspended on Wednesday for unruly behaviour in the Bihar assembly while demanding Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's resignation over financial irregularities. The incident had prompted one of the members to throw a footwear at the speaker. Speaker Uday Narain Choudhary suspended the 67, mostly from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Left parties, a day after bedlam gripped the house.
The suspended legislators were forcibly removed by the marshals from the house. The assembly opened at 11 am after being adjourned on Tuesday afternoon following clashes between the ruling National Democratic Alliance and opposition members. The opposition members trooped towards the speaker, shouted slogans against their suspension and demanded the resignation of Nitish Kumar. The suspension will remain effective during the ongoing monsoon session till July 24.
The ruling NDA alleged that an opposition member threw a sandal at the speaker to protest suspension of opposition members. Protests continued outside the house also. A woman legislator created ruckus by breaking flower pots in the premises. On Tuesday, 14 opposition members of the Bihar Legislative Council were suspended for their unruly behaviour in the house during protests against alleged financial irregularities.
Here we have the entire story that happened in the Bihar assembly.
Politics in Bihar took another ugly turn on Wednesday when Opposition MLAs allegedly threw a pair of sandals at the Speaker after he suspended 16 of them for rowdy behaviour. As the watch and ward staff lifted RJD MLA Bablu Dev, one of the 16 MLAs suspended from the Assembly, his party colleagues ran towards him and a slipper was thrown at the Speaker Udai Narayan Choudhry. Choudhry then ordered that all MLAs protesting in the well of the House be removed.
Chaotic scenes were witnessed in both Houses of Bihar Legislature on Tuesday as Opposition members overturned desks and chairs, broke microphones and virtually came to blows with ruling alliance MLAs over the debate on the CAG report.
It was a free for all inside the Assembly on Tuesday, all because MLAs could not decide what to debate during working hours. The BJP and JD(U) wanted to discuss price rise and the failings of the Central government. "People have a right to debate, but not in this fashion. The government has a job to do, so has the Opposition, but they can't stop us from functioning in this way," Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said.
"This is unparliamentary, Nitish has attacked me. This incident (the ruckus) is an embarrassment and I condemn it," RJD chief Lalu Yadav said.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad was on Tuesday not allowed to enter the Bihar Assembly where opposition MLAs were on an indefinite dharna demanding the resignation of the Nitish Kumar government.
Around 80 Bihar Opposition members spent the night in the well of the two houses of the state legislature demanding the resignation of Nitish Kumar in the light of a CAG report highlighting alleged financial irregularities in the state. The Opposition MLAs and MLCs in Bihar said they would continue their dharna in both the Houses till their demand was met, apparently taking a cue from the Karnataka Opposition members, who were on a five-day-long dharna in the state Assembly demanding CBI probe into the alleged illegal mining in the state.
Last week, MLAs belonging to the Congress and the JD(S) made a tamasha of the Assembly by spending three nights in the House having biriyani, singing songs and sleeping on the floor. Thier demand? Handing over the illegal mining scandal involving the Reddy brothers to the CBI.
Congress and JD(S) MLAs, who do not share the same political ideology, were found sleeping together. Politics, after all, is a story of strange bedfellow.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Janardhana Reddy, the eldest of the Reddy brothers and a baron involved in iron ore minig, claimed that his family was as pure as 24 carat gold. Reddy said he was ready for not only a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), but also by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or any global investigation agency.
A few years ago, Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed pandemonium when a few MLAs allegedly tried to `disrobe' AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa.
Recently, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav almost came close to landing a blow on BJP leader Ananth Kumar in Parliament when the later called him a traitor.
