The Supreme Court and Second Amendment Rights
Watch Live Online Today
(7/22/2010) 7:00 p.m. PT (10:00 ET)

I am delighted to invite you to join with us online today as we bring to you live our very special program, "The Supreme Court and the Battle for Second Amendment Rights," celebrating our Constitution's latest victory. This program will be broadcast in a free LIVE stream from the Independent Institute's conference center in Oakland, Calif.

In 2008 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a landmark decision that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to "keep and bear arms" (Heller v. District of Columbia). Last month, a second, historic decision by the Court in McDonald v. Chicago overturns the ban on handguns by the city of Chicago and elsewhere. Now, where do we go from here?

Our program will feature Independent Institute Research Fellow Stephen P. Halbrook (author of the books, Securing Civil Rights and The Founders' Second Amendment, which were cited six times in the McDonald ruling) and Donald E. J. Kilmer, Jr. (Professor of Constitutional Law at Lincoln Law School of San Jose and attorney at law), as they discuss the Second and Fourteenth Amendments and what it means to take the Bill of Rights seriously.

We will begin broadcasting at approximately 7:00 p.m. PT. (10:00 ET). Please tune in here.

For more information or for media inquiries, please contact Lindsay Boyd at 510.632.1366, ext. 116, or media@independent.org.
