People's Struggles and the Role of the New Camera

Palash Biswas

Dear Sanju (Sanjay Joshi),

I have just returned from Nagpur and I have a busy schedule ahead.I may not join you in New Delhi. But I am with you all despite some differences with JSM.It would have been very opportune to interact with you all in the national convention. I am not joining but my presence should be felt as I consider this movement the best thing happened for alternative media movement for which many of us fought for almost four decades.

As Ms Arundhati Ray is the best person to define and explain the affairs of zionist corporate imperialism in the context of Indian people, the nation, the society and culture and ultimately the humanity and the galaxy and I hope that she would address the issues with surgical precison.

I would be happy if the new camera is used to break the traditional format of cinema to make escape routes out of this infinite valley of death which is altogether an infinite carbon mono oxide gas chamber.

We must opt for micro format of cinema as it seems rather very important to replicate the aggressive marketing strategy of ad films and zingles which capture the market brainwashing and controlling the psyche of the people.

I am fortunate to have a filmmaker friend like Joshy Joseph right in Kolkata who has an excellent expertise to make one shot films conveying the urgency of the issue with proper blend of blood, meat, bones and the heart and mind.We have  a very committed filmmaker Rajiv Kumar in our friend circle.Recently I discussed the issue with Kashturi and ranu Ghosh and other filmakers in Kolkata,New Delhi and Mumbai.

Since the bleeding and divided geopolitics which we know as South Asia, the shifted war zone of unipolar globe is made of ninety percent complete illiterate or semi literate people who may not understand the print in its classic format, since false information and hate campaign have been technically boosted with scientific effects unbound and finally because information explosion coincided with religious communal blind nationalism tsunami in and economy of ethnic cleansing banking on apartheid,we have to opt for visual media as we have almost failed to communicate via alternative print media as well as social networking inflicted virally with free flow of black money and foreign capital.

The convention is beginning with a right note as our old friend Akhilendra Pratap Singh would be still on hunger strike focusing the issues of our concern.

You must plan for large scale bring your film festivals which may encourage low cost filmmaking with vision and commitment.

I talked to Samayantar editor Pankaj Bisht earlier in the morning on the very issue .He is also very optimistic with Cinema of Resistance. But Pankajda and me feel that the long long docu films and docu features may not serve our cause at present. It is no use to screen only old films.

In Kolkata, Cinema of Resistance screened films like Gari Lohardaga and there was an excellent presentation on migration of songs.Kolkata witnessed most current films on Maruti suzuki strike,Mujaffarnagar riots and Odisha land grab exposing the corporate hegemony. Here you are,you are already on the right track. But you have to be focused on,I insist,Films like Bideshia in Mumbai would not serve the cause and not even the films alike that on south city mall directed by ranu Ghosh and even those spectacular films directed by Anand Patwardhan would be useful to initiate the wanted interactive visual conversation which is all about the Cinema on resistance as I assume. We must be disillusioned and strategically reformatted genre  breaking urgency should be felt to strike the bull`s eye.i should clarify that I am illusioned with all Patwardhan films, but I want to change his aesthetics not his vision.

Since I have been working with Joshy Joseph ,I know very well what I am trying to say.

I hope that you should just begin the debate and Cinema of Resistance is potential enough to execute all our dream projects which should be extended to all Indian villages, slums, tribal areas, valleys and islands.

thanking you.

Yours faithfully

3rd National Convention of CINEMA OF RESISTANCE

Dear Friends,

The Cinema of Resistance initiative, organized by 'The Group' – the cinema collective of Jan Sanskriti Manch – has entered into the 9th year of its activities. Beginning from 2006, we have organized 35 film festivals and innumerable smaller film screenings till date. The crux of the matter being that ever since the 1st Gorakhpur Film Festival in March 2006 till today, we have been able to follow the model of negating big sponsorships of all kinds and relying on peoples' contributions instead. Our model has allowed us to spread the movement that sparked off in Uttar Pradesh all the way to Bihar, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Haryana, West Bengal, Odisha, Delhi and now to a few cities in South India as well.

To sharpen the Cinema of Resistance initiative and to formulate policy and planning to organize it better, we would be holding the 3rd National Convention in New Delhi during February 15-16, 2014. Apart from the Delegate Sessions scheduled for the above two days, we would be holding an Open Session on the evening of 15th February. The theme for the Open Session is "People's Struggles and the Role of the New Camera". Speakers in this session would include Arundhati Roy, Ashok Bhowmick, Sanjay Kak, Sanjay Joshi, Manoj Singh, Amitabh Patra, Mohammad Aslam and Shailendra Pratap Singh Bhati. Kasturi will conduct the session and Uma Chakravarti will chair it.

All of you are cordially invited to attend and participate.

: Months of planning. Coordinating. Promoting. Thinking. Failing. When all these are put together what we got was a grand success.

Cinema Of Resistance presents 1st Kolkata People's Film Festival.

Kolkata has seen something beyond dhoom 5 and paglu 3 this time, and yes I must say there are still few people who loves alternative movies, who loves resisting movies, who loves movies of class struggle and common warfare.

    Waiting for next year's.

And thanks to all the volunteers who worked so hard to put up this big show.

And special mention goes to the captain of the ship Kas Turi without whom nothing would have been possible. — with Sanjay Joshi and 9 others at Jadavpur University.
