Woman dies after giving birth

A woman who gave birth to twins early on Friday died of complications after she was allegedly refused admission by two government hospitals in the city.

Usha Tanti, 40, lived with her husband Titu, 50, in a shanty off Mayo Road. Titu said his wife gave birth to a boy and a girl at home shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Usha's condition started deteriorating and Titu took her to Chittaranjan Shishu Sadan, where she had been going for pregnancy check-ups. "But the doctor denied admission and referred my wife to Shambhunath Pandit Hospital." Titu alleged they were turned back there, too. "We went back but Usha was dead," he said.

Both hospitals denied the charges against them. Chittaranjan Shishu Sadan superintendent Asish Mukhopadhyay said: "After a probe, we have found out no one was refused admission."

A senior health official said two teams were sent to the hospitals to investigate. "Both teams concluded that the allegations are untrue," he said.
