Press Council chairman Justice Markandeya Katju's labelling of the Indian news media as "anti-people" has few takers among the ones who count the most: news consumers. Barely 31% back his view. On the contrary, their trust in the news media is as high as 92%; over 61% prefer an independent media instead of a regulated media; and 66% believe the road ahead is self-regulation, not one dictated by the government. However, Justice Katju's view that the media was diverting people's attention by focusing on trivia and gossip found resonance among TV watchers (59%). These are some of the key findings of a five-city opinion poll conducted for Outlook by MDRA. Other major findings:
- 76% feel media is fair and accurate in coverage
- 64% feel media should be free to choose the content it wants to publish or air
- 43.8% believe media houses should be free to own assets across media
The poll was conducted among 516 respondents in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Calcutta and Hyderabad on November 22-23.

| Nov 26, 2011 07:46 PM 2 | I dont know about the other respondents, but personally, I feel that media deserves what they got - trusting and eulogising a judge to be free from humane biases. The Indian judiciary is at the heart of the rot in the Indian democracy. And Katju is only a part of it. |

Here is christian media, hindu media muslim media, paid news, forged news. Despite all these media is as necessary as police. Media doesnt need a 'REGULATOR'. But it surely needs a autonomous ( free from govt's and media's control) watchdog which can prosecute media persons for their fraudulant, unlawful and unethical acts. Moreover there must be provision of strict punishment/imprisonment in IPC. |
