Gaza 'Flytilla' activists arrested for chanting 'Free Palestine' in Tel Aviv airport

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 05:56 AM PDT

RT crew filmed the arrest of pro-Gaza activists, who were detained for chanting "Free Palestine". Police in Israel detained several activists who arrived at Tel Aviv's international airport on Friday to show their support for activists arriving from abroad to take part in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The arrested protesters arrived in Tel Aviv from elsewhere in Israel. It comes as first Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists are being blocked in their attempts to reach Gaza by air and defy Israeli policies. Many are being stopped at European airports, while two American campaigners have been deported upon arrival in Tel Aviv. The move comes a week after a flotilla of a dozen ships bound for Gaza were prevented from leaving port in Greece.

Should China be 'contained'?

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 05:43 AM PDT

This month marks the 40th anniversary of Henry Kissinger's secret trip to Beijing, which launched the process of mending a 20-year breach in diplomatic relations between the United States and China. That trip, and President Richard Nixon's subsequent visit, represented a major Cold War realignment. The US and China put aside their intense hostility in a joint and successful effort to contain an expansionist Soviet Union.

Propaganda, The News, and What People Believe and Why

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 04:50 AM PDT

I believe perhaps the running of the two articles on the same theme below as natural companions might alert or illuminate the hard core believers of  Mainstream Media propaganda and/or so-called official stories,  to what is being done to them on a daily basis,  and on why people believe what they do and how hard facts belying fundamental beliefs usually seem to reinforce them in the gullible and thoughtless.

US Failure In Afghanistan

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 04:27 AM PDT

9/11 Commission stumbled across strong evidence of treason by Cheney. It was determined by experts that an energy weapon was used to bring down Twin Towers. Overwhelming evidence exist that collapse of towers and building 7 were instances of control demolition. The big question asked is as to why was building 7 that was not hit by plane, demolished 8 hours after the second tower collapsed?

US government openly admits arming Mexican drug gangs with 30,000 firearms but why? 060706swat3

It is now a widely-reported fact that under the Obama administration, U.S. federal agents actively placed over 30,000 fully-functional weapons into the hands of Mexican drug gangs, then halted all surveillance and tracking activities of where those weapons were going.

This is not a conspiracy theory, nor a piece of fiction. It is now an openly-admitted fact that this was pulled off by the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, more commonly called "ATF") under orders from Washington. The program was called "Fast and Furious."

The tactic of arresting Palestinian children

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 03:56 AM PDT

Dozens of Palestinian children clamoured excitedly in the East Jerusalem village of Silwan on June 26, each clutching the strings to as many helium-filled balloons as they could. Moments later, the children watched as the sky above this flashpoint Palestinian neighbourhood filled with red, green, black and white - the colours of the Palestinian flag - and the hundreds of balloons were taken away by the wind.

Technology and inequality

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:59 AM PDT

Until now, the relentless march of technology and globalisation has played out hugely in favour of high-skilled labour, helping to fuel record-high levels of income and wealth inequality around the world. Will the endgame be renewed class warfare, with populist governments coming to power, stretching the limits of income redistribution, and asserting greater state control over economic life?

Perpetual War, Corporate Greed, & Austerity for the Masses

BC Question: What will it take to bring Obama home? As the corporate/military U.S. Empire, headed by the nominally black Barack Obama, with the complicity of his Democrat[ic] and Republican party political pimps, rumbles along, crushing the economic needs, human rights, and aspirations of everyday Black, White, Brown, Red, and Yellow people in this nation and around the world, conditions for just plain ordinary people are worsening and deteriorating at lightning speed. Only the avaricious, blood-sucking, bloated rich are financially benefiting from the increasing misery of the masses of ordinary people.

Beware of Dr. Jihad

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

Splendid news: Our homeland security officials have sent fresh warnings to foreign governments that "human bombs" may try to board planes with surgically implanted explosives. The ticking terrorists are reportedly getting help from murder-minded Arab Muslim physicians trained in the West. Infidels beware: Dr. Jihad's version of the health care oath omits the "no" in "Do no harm."

The death docs may be using their expertise to play "Hide the IED" in body cavities that bomb-detection equipment cannot penetrate. At least one Saudi operative has been nabbed with explosives in his bum, and British intel picked up on Arab website chatter last year about possible breast-bomb inserts. Officials are now said to be on the lookout for physicians' notes requesting that passengers be allowed to carry syringes — which could carry detonation chemicals.

Caution: Negotiation Hazard Ahead!

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 08:46 PM PDT

Even during the long years of armed struggle, Palestinians aspired to a different and more effective method of dealing with Israel. At their 1988 Algiers conference, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) decided—perhaps belatedly—that the time for diplomatic negotiations had arrived. Relying on armed resistance alone was akin deploying an aircraft carrier without jet assisted take-off. In prolonged exile, and a financial pariah following the PLO's support of Suddam Hussein's 1990 invasion of Kuwait, the PLO—created by the Arab League—began negotiations with Israel.

Tangled elaborations of desire - Part 1: Walking in quicksand

Blue is the color of our childhood injuries, which produce our criminal histories. The beauty of blue in the sky is exhilarating, yet beauty is a drug that prevents us from fulfilling our function, which is always to spread light and ensure justice for all (if we ever hope to get it ourselves) through whatever means we may conjure. You must be colorized to your own unique astrological signature to be in balance. Nobody is, or ever was in balance, because our lives are built on quicksand, misunderstood information tailored to achieve maximum exploitation with the least effort, and this keeps everybody bleeding. It is the No. 1 human occupation.

Pakistani Politicians

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 07:40 PM PDT

Most Pakistani politicians suffer from verbal diarrhea: words fall from their mouths without any control. As a result of this widespread disease, one can never believe in what they say. They issue ultimatums and deadlines, they form and break alliances, they accuse each other of various crimes, but one can never know if any of this is true. None of this can be considered politics, no matter how one defines politics. It is, in fact, moral decay which has permeated to such an extent that it has become a norm, an acceptable mode of behavior which carries no consequences or so they think.

The aim of such negative propaganda is to weaken people's faith in the professional capabilities and competence of Army and ISI to defend national interests.

Will 2012 Be The Year That We See Mass Starvation In Africa? 12 Signs That The World Is Running Out Of Food

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 06:43 PM PDT

Tonight millions of American families will shovel huge piles of food into their mouths without even realizing that starvation is rapidly spreading in Africa.  Right now Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are experiencing the worst drought conditions that they have seen in 60 years.  Tens of thousands of African families have abandoned their homes as they desperately search for food and water.  Hundreds of thousands of farm animals have died because of the drought.  Considering the fact that approximately two-thirds of the people living in the region "make their living by raising goats, sheep, cattle and camels", the word "catastrophic" just is not sufficient to describe what is happening.  Every single day, thousands more head to Dadaab, the biggest refugee camp in the world.  Dadaab was originally designed to hold 90,000 people, but now over 360,000 precious people are camped there.  In addition, approximately 30,000 desperately hungry people are standing outside the fences waiting to be admitted.  It is projected that by the end of the year there will be over a half million people living in Dadaab.  Sadly, this is just the beginning.  According to the United Nations, there are already 10 million people in the region that are facing severe food shortages, and many fear that if the drought continues we could actually see mass starvation in Africa in 2012.

Flotilla in a mine field

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:57 PM PDT

The final report of the UN committee investigating last year's flotilla to Gaza has not yet been published. But from portions of the draft reported by Barak Ravid in Haaretz on Wednesday, it is clear that the committee, headed by Geoffrey Palmer, is not dealing solely with the dry facts. The committee is trying to present an "effective" truth - one meant not to hang the guilty parties, whoever they may be, but to help Turkey and Israel restore their relationship.

The making of religious Zionist extremists

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:57 PM PDT

Two central points were missed during the public debate about the Rabbi Dov Lior affair, which focused on the secondary question of whether it is appropriate to investigate a rabbi for remarks he made condoning "words of Torah." My response is no, it is not. If there is room for a criminal proceeding it must concentrate on the writers of the book Torat Hamelech. Nevertheless it is annoying that all those who are railing against the "crossing of lines" in the arrest of the rabbi, did not bother to protest at all, at least with the same fervor, the contents of those above mentioned "words of Torah." Ultimately we are referring to enthusiastic agreement with a book that draws a fine line between the value of the life of a Jew and the value of the life of a "gentile" - a book which expresses points of view according to which, during a war, it is possible to kill even babies in situations in which it is "clear that they will grow up to harm us."

Where is the political cottage cheese?

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:57 PM PDT

Revolutions are taking place in our region, corrupt regimes are collapsing, people are fighting for freedom of choice and expression, and in Syria blood is still being spilled. And in Israel, Twitter and Facebook, which spurred millions to fight against corrupt regimes, have managed to slightly lower the price of cottage cheese. It all started with a young father named Yitzhak Elrov, a cantor from the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak, who called on consumers to boycott cottage cheese until the price was lowered.

A halakhic state in fact

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:57 PM PDT

I'm puzzled by the shocked and outraged reactions to the refusal of rabbis Dov Lior and Yaakov Yosef to show up for interrogation, to the demonstrations in support of them, and to their fundamental claim that the law of the Torah is above the law of the state. Statements by politicians and writers along the lines of "no one is above the law" or "dina demalchuta dina" - a Talmudic acknowledgment of the civil government's authority - are completely fallacious.

A threat to the rule of law

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:57 PM PDT

The ecstatic followers who hoisted Rabbis Dov Lior and Yaakov Yosef on their shoulders upon their release from police questioning over possible incitement were not anarchists denying the rule of law, but a passionate group of citizens rejecting the legal culture of the state in favor of a different legal culture.

Still unresolved restitution

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:57 PM PDT

The process of Jewish property restitution in Lithuania has dragged on for a decade now. Late last month, however, the Seimas, the Lithuanian parliament, voted 82 to seven (with 16 abstentions ) to approve a bill for compensation for communal property stolen during the Holocaust. This is good news, to be sure, but in my opinion, it is also too little too late.

Ron Paul Statement on Belarus Democracy Reauthorization Act

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:42 PM PDT

I would like to know how many millions of taxpayer dollars the US government has wasted trying to overthrow the government in Belarus. I would like to know how much money has been squandered by US government-funded front organizations like the National Endowment for Democracy, the International Republican Institute, Freedom House, and others meddling like the old Soviet Union in the internal politics of a country that has neither threatened nor attacked the United States. It the arrogance of our foreign policy establishment that leads to this kind of schizophrenic legislation, where we demand that the rest of the world bend to the will of US foreign policy and we call it "democracy." We wonder why we are no longer loved and admired overseas.

The Scientific Dictatorship, Natural Law and the Abolition of Man

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 02:05 PM PDT

These words, penned by C.S. Lewis in his 1947 book The Abolition of Man, remind us that there truly exists a phenomenon called natural law, or the Tao as Lewis calls it. Natural law has been recognized for as long as history has been written. To deny it takes the conscious effort of a normal human being. The idea of inalienable rights – the foundation upon which the United States Declaration of Independence was written – springs from natural law. As the book of Romans tells us, "For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these… shew the work of the law written in their hearts…"

Negative Role of Media in Testing Times

Our media has created super hype over incidents of US helicopters assault in Abbottabad, Mehran naval base attack, Kharotabad incident in Quetta, killing of Sarfaraz Shah in Karachi at the hands of soldier of Sindh Rangers, and murder of journalist Saleem Shehzad. The wrath of media is focused on armed forces, particularly Army and ISI and it looks as if it has old scores to settle and is giving vent to its pent up resentment. It is not leaving any stone unturned to tarnish the high reputation and image of Army and ISI and its rancorous posturing is in harmony with biased foreign media which has a specific agenda.

Jewish Australian MP: Bring Israel's African Immigrants to Australia

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:09 AM PDT

Michael Danby, a Jewish MP in the Australian Parliament, has "enthusiastically agreed" to the idea of bringing to Australia thousands of Africans who have illegally immigrated to Israel ("Danny Danon: Send African Immigrants to Australia"; Jerusalem Post). The idea originated with Danny Danon, a Likud MP well known for his far right views. (Here he is in the NYTimes advocating that Israel annex the West Bank.)  Being a good rightist, Danon thinks that the immigrants are a threat to the Jewish identity of Israel: "The arrival of thousands of Muslim infiltrators to Israeli territory is a clear threat to the state's Jewish identity. … On the one hand, it treats the refugees and migrants in a humane way. On the other hand, it does not threaten Israel's future and our goal to maintain a clear and solid Jewish majority."

Shoot the messenger: EU blames debt panic on rating agencies

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:02 AM PDT

Unjustified and unfair ... but with the power to determine the fate of entire countries. That's the verdict of Germany's Finance Minister on the world's big three credit rating agencies after Portugal had it's debt downgraded to junk status. The move is having a disastrous effect on the EU - ripping apart the relative calm brought by a second Greek bailout. The panic is proving contagious, with fresh fears emerging that Ireland may also need another cash-injection. It comes as Germany, the EU's biggest economy, debates the very legality of the bailouts. For more on this RT's joined by Patrick Young, a writer and editor, from Torun in Poland.
