PRESS RELEASE  NHRC takes cognizance of midnight police action on sleeping protestors in Delhi; issues notices to Union Home Secretary, Delhi Chief Secretary and Delhi Police Commissioner  New Delhi, June 6th, 2011  The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, is pained to see media reports and complaints alleging unconstitutional police action in the midnight involving shelling of tear gas shells, lathicharge and forceful eviction of a large number of people sleeping under the pandal, the venue of a protest at Ramlila Ground in New Delhi on the 4th-5th June, 2011. There have been reports of injuries to several persons, including children, women and senior citizens. Several persons have been reported missing.   As the incident has a bearing on the people's human rights, the Commission issues notices to the Union Home Secretary, Chief Secretary, Government of NCT Delhi, and the Commissioner of Police, Delhi , calling for their reports within two weeks in the matter.   The concerned officers shall also inform the Commission specifically on the following points:-  1. Reasons for resorting to such an action in the midnight;   2. How many people have been injured and is there any proposal to compensate them;  3.
