 | CHANDIGARH: Reserving its decision on age criteria for school admissions, Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday asked the five respondent schools ' Sacred Heart, Carmel Convent, St John's, St Anne's and Strawberry Fields ' not to hold any draw of lots for admissions in their schools till the pronouncement of the court verdict. Expressing anguish over the issue, Justice Mahesh Grover while reserving the order, said, ''It is very sad that the issue pertaining to admissions in pre-nursery classes has reached the court.'' Apparently miffed over the legal fight over admissions in kindergarten classes, Justice Grover said it was really unfortunate that mad rush for admissions in such classes like pre-nursery, LKG, etc has echoed before the high court. Justice Grover was hearing the bunch of petitions filed by several minor kids through their parents seeking direction to Chandigarh administration and some of the private schools to consider the candidature of children who are minimum of three-plus years of age by treating them eligible for LKG and pre-nursery for the academic year 2011-12. Earlier the court had asked UT education department and the abovementioned private schools to respond to the contentions of the petitioners. When the matter came for hearing before the HC, the respondent schools, except Strawberry Fields, pleaded that there is no question of making any change in the criteria of admissions at this juncture and any change at this point of time will be like opening of Pandora box, which will delay the entire admission process of this year. Counsel for these schools, senior advocate ML Sarin also pleaded that being minority institution they can fix their own criteria and the administration cannot interfere in that. However, Strawberry Field School expressed its solidarity with the petitioners and informed the court that one-time exception can be given this year and suggested the court that six months' time in the age criteria of 3-plus years can be added so that maximum students can be adjusted this session. Clearing their stand, UT counsel informed that they had never issued any circular directing private schools to follow specific criteria and any circular issue by them was just informative in nature.
