--Presidential Alerts issued by the president or by FEMA; Imminent Threat Alerts to be included in text messages or via wireless alert 07 Feb 2011 The FCC is planning an upgrade to national Emergency Alert System (EAS) tests by including presidential announcements in the system. Lisa Fowlkes, deputy chief of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau of the FCC, said that the FCC is also looking at how wireless broadband could also enhance the EAS. Fowlkes said the CMAS is slated to begin deployment in April 2012.

Israeli cmdr. urges readiness for war 08 Feb 2011 The Israeli army chief has urged Tel Aviv to make preparations for an all-out war over the recent developments across the Middle East, a report says. Israel's Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi has said that given the recent revolution protests across Middle East, Israel must prepare for a battle in several theaters, Ynetnews quoted him as saying on Monday. The outgoing military chief also said, "The connection between the different players requires us to contend with more than one theater."

'US sends warships, troops to Egypt' 07 Feb 2011 The US is sending warships, including one with 800 troops, and other military assets to Egypt as the revolution in the North African country gains momentum. Officials in Washington have stated that the move is to be prepared in case of an evacuation of Americans from Egypt. The Pentagon has dismissed widespread assumptions that military intervention in Cairo is being contemplated, asserting that the objective of the deployment is mainly for the evacuation of US citizens in case the situation in Egypt further deteriorates.

Rumsfeld says now: "I made a misstatement." What he meant to say is there were 'suspect sites'. 'US unable to account for Iraq funds' 08 Feb 2011 The US Defense Department cannot account for how it spent funds that belonged to the reconstruction of war-torn Iraq due to poor record keeping, a report says. The Pentagon, entrusted with spending $9.1 billion on reconstruction projects in 2011, has failed to elucidate the whereabouts of this year's money, a Press TV correspondent reported on Monday. The US military agency has also refused to send any representatives to Iraq's Supreme Audit Court to explain such an inappropriate use and undetected loss.

Marine gets six years in prison for skimming $1.69 million from Iraqi aid 07 Feb 2011 A Marine captain was sentenced Monday to six years in federal prison for skimming $1.69 million from government contracts meant to assist the economic development of Iraq. Eric Schmidt was a logistics officer for the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Marine Division dealing with contracts for Iraqi firms, officials said. He was sentenced in federal court in Riverside after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and filing a false tax return.

US-led forces kill 2 Afghan civilians 07 Feb 2011 US-led forces have killed two Afghan civilians and seriously injured another one in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province, a foreign company announces. The Central Asia Development Group (CADG) said Monday that the foreign forces killed two Afghan employees of the Singapore-based engineering firm last week. CADG added that another Afghan civilian hired by the company was injured by "friendly fire" from US-led security forces on February 3.

2 US-led soldiers killed in Afghan war 07 Feb 2011 A powerful roadside bomb explosion has killed two US-led foreign soldier and an Afghan interpreter in troubled southern Afghanistan. The attack took place on Monday at the customs office in Kandahar Province. Another foreign soldier was wounded in the attack. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the bombing. A spokesman for the militants has claimed that 13 foreign troops died in the attack.

Pakistanis angered by US efforts to have 'diplomat' released 07 Feb 2011 A protest rally has taken place in the Pakistan city of Lahore against US citizen [Blackwater mercenary] Raymond Davis. Hundreds of Pakistanis have held a demonstration against the man they believe was responsible for the deaths of Pakistanis in a shooting incident last month. Pakistani lawyers, rights groups and political activists rallied in front of the US consulate in Lahore.

Activists plan 2nd Gaza-bound flotilla 08 Feb 2011 International activists are planning to send an aid convoy to the blockaded Gaza Strip on the anniversary of Tel Aviv's deadly attack on a humanitarian mission. The mission has been organized by Spanish activists Manuel Tapial and Laura Arau and is expected to set off from the country to the Palestinian coastal sliver in the spring, Press TV correspondent Sonia Labboun reported on Monday from the Spanish capital, Madrid.

'Gaza patients in critical condition' 07 Feb 2011 The Gaza Health Ministry has warned that the current shortage of medicine due to Israel's blockade has caused a serious health disaster for Palestinian patients. According to the ministry, more than 170 medicines and 140 medical consumables are currently out of stock, a Press TV correspondent in Gaza said on Sunday. According to the ministry, both Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) are to be blamed for the increase in the deaths of patients who are in dire need of medicines.

Milan judge frees former Guantanamo inmate convicted of association with terrorism aim --'Both the defence and the prosecution asked the judge to take into account his illegal and inhumane detention at Guantanamo.' 07 Feb 2011 A judge on Monday ordered that a Tunisian convicted of criminal association with the aim of terrorism must be freed from jail, citing time served at Guantanamo. Adel Ben Mabrouk and another Guantanamo inmate were transferred to Italy in November 2009 as part of the U.S. administration's bid to shut down the prison. Mabrouk's defence lawyer, Giuseppina Regina, said she and prosecutors made a joint appeal to the judge to take into consideration the eight years Mabrouk spent in Guantanamo in "inhumane conditions," plus a year and a half in Italian prison.

Bush fears arrest, scraps Swiss visit --Court officials: Criminal complaints against Bush lodged in Geneva 07 Feb 2011 Former US President [sic] George W Bush has reportedly cancelled a visit to Switzerland amid concerns that he could be arrested for allegedly authorising the torture of prisoners. Human rights groups in the country have been calling for the Swiss government to arrest Bush over allegations he had ordered the torture of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay.

Wikileaks' Julian Assange 'would be denied justice' 07 Feb 2011 There is a risk of "denial of justice" if Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is tried for rape in Sweden, his lawyer has told a UK extradition hearing. Geoffrey Robertson QC told the court that there was a risk his client may be extradited to the US, or even Guantanamo Bay, and could face the death penalty as a result. However, Clare Montgomery QC, representing the Swedish authorities, said the country provided "protection against that sort of threat and violation" taking place. She said the European Court of Human Rights would intervene if Mr Assange was to face the prospect of "inhuman or degrading treatment or an unfair trial" in the US.

Anonymous hackers attack US security firm HBGary 07 Feb 2011 Online activist group Anonymous has targeted an American security firm that claimed to know the identities of its leaders. The secretive organisation is being investigated in several countries over strikes on Visa, PayPal and others. Over the weekend Aaron Barr, head of HBGary Federal, said he had discovered the names of its most senior figures. The group retaliated overnight by breaking into the company's website and hijacking his Twitter account. [Awesome!]

Newark, NJ, airport loses power for 90 minutes 07 Feb 2011 A 90-minute power outage at Newark Liberty International Airport messed with airlines' schedules Monday afternoon and also affected 20,000 customers in neighboring towns. Residual delays were expected as a result of the outage, said Ron Marsico, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport. Flights were allowed to land during the outage, but security checkpoints had to close and the monorail that moves among all three terminals also had been affected, Marsico said.

DPS building in Phoenix evacuated after bomb threat 06 Feb 2011 Arizona Department of Public safety officials evacuated their headquarters Sunday night after a bomb threat, authorities said. A Phoenix police spokesman, Sgt. Steve Martos, said an individual called 911 from a cellphone in the area of 21st Avenue and Thomas Road and referenced a "bomb" and a police "building."

GOP Would Chop FDA, USDA Food Safety Budgets 07 Feb 2011 Key House Republicans released a proposal late last week to cut $58 billion from the federal budget for the second half of Fiscal Year 2011. Food safety programs at both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture could face steep cuts. Under the plan, the committee that oversees both FDA and USDA budgets is asked to cut spending by 14 percent, compared with fiscal year 2010, which comes out to $3.2 billion. Record Low Arctic Sea Ice Extent for January 08 Feb 2011 The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has reported that Arctic sea ice was at its lowest extent ever recorded for January (since satellite records began)... NSIDC reported that ice extent was unusually low in Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait, and Davis Strait in the early winter. Normally frozen over by late November, these areas did not completely freeze until mid-January 2011. The Labrador Sea was also unusually ice-free.

Previous lead stories: US may extend stay in Iraq 05 Feb 2011 American officials suggest that tens of thousands of US troops in Iraq may extend their stay in the country well beyond the 2011 withdrawal deadline. US Ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey said on Friday that more US military forces may be needed to counter what he called "threats to Iraq's stability, [and they] will remain in 2012." The prospects of a longer US military stay in Iraq contradict the clauses of a 2008 agreement between Baghdad and Washington.

Egypt denies vice president targeted in shooting 06 Feb 2011 Egypt's government is denying that the newly named vice president was targeted in an assassination attempt. A government statement says a stray bullet from an exchange of fire between "criminal elements" struck the lead car in Vice President [CIA torture point-man] Omar Suleiman's motorcade as it moved through an area of disturbances on Jan. 28. The statement said Saturday that the vice president was not injured. It said there was no evidence he was intentionally targeted and referred to the shooting as a random incident.

Obama Administration Distances Self From Own Envoy to Mubarak 05 Feb 2011 The Obama administration on Saturday distanced itself from comments about Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak made by a man the president had used as an envoy to Mubarak just days before. Saying he was speaking for himself, former U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Frank Wisner said at a security conference in Munich, Germany, that "President Mubarak remains utterly critical in the days ahead as we sort our way toward the future." Wisner said that Mubarak "must stay in office in order to steer those changes through. ...This is an ideal moment for him to show the way forward."
