Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel. Power, Light & Lubricants in India (Base: 1993-94 = 100) Review for the week ended 7th August, 2010 (16 Shravana, 1932 Saka)
New Delhi: August 19, 2010.
The WPI for the week ended 7th August, 2010 in respect of 'Primary Articles' and 'Fuel. Power, Light & Lubricants' is given below:
PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02%)
The index for this major group declined by 0.1 percent to 307.8 (Provisional) from 308.0 (Provisional) for the previous week.
The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 14.85 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 07/08/2010 (over 08/08/2009) as compared to 15.66 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 31/07/2010) and 7.85 percent during the corresponding week (ended 08/08/2009) of the previous year.
The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-
The index for 'Food Articles' group rose by 0.2 percent to 298.6 (Provisional) from 298.1 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of maize (2%) and tea, rice, fish-marine and condiments & spices (1% each). However, the prices of moong and masur (2% each) and urad and bajra (1% each) declined.
The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group declined by 0.6 percent to 287.7 (Provisional) from 289.5 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of soyabean (14%), raw silk (4%) and fodder and gingelly seed (1% each). However, the prices of groundnut seed (2%) and copra and raw rubber (1% each) moved up.
FUEL, POWER, LIGHT & LUBRICANTS (Weight 14.23%)
The index for this major group declined by 0.1 percent to 385.9 (Provisional) from 386.2 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of naphtha (3%). However, the prices of aviation turbine fuel (3%) and furnace oil (2%) moved up. The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis stood at 12.57 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 07/08/2010 over 08/08/2009 as compared to 12.66 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 31/07/2010) and (-)9.88 percent during the corresponding week (ended 08/08/2009) of the previous year.

PM Greets the Nation on NAVROZ – the Parsi New Year
New Delhi: August 19, 2010.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has greeted the nation and especially the members of the Parsi community on the joyous occasion of Navroz – the Parsi new year.
In his message, the Prime Minster has said that Navroz is the most important part of the Gahambar celebration of nature and the seasons, a festival dedicated to renewal and righteousness. He said Prophet Zarathushtra's teachings of human values and respect for the environment are relevant today and hoped that the Navroz will usher in happiness and prosperity to all Parsis and to the Nation.

World Bank's Assistance for Mumbai Suburban Railway System
New Delhi: August 19, 2010.
World Bank has approved a loan of $430 million for financing Mumbai Urban Transport Project – II (MUTP II). MUTP II Project consists of the following works:
1. 5th & 6th Lines CSTM-Kurla.
2. 5th & 6th Lines Thane-Diva.
3. 6th Line Mumbai Central-Borivali.
4. Extension of Harbour Line from Andheri to Goregaon.
5. DC to AC Conversion.
6. EMU procurement and manufacture.
7. Maintenance facilities for EMUs.
8. Stabling Lines for EMUs.
9. Technical studies and institutional strengthening studies.
10. Resettlement and rehabilitation of project affected households
11. Station improvement & trespassing control.
The project is expected to be completed by 2014-15.
The World Bank loan will be used to finance procurement of electrics for manufacture of EMU rakes, part funding of DC to AC conversion on Central Railway, technical studies and institutional strengthening studies. The other works mentioned above are also part of MUTP II, but they will be funded by Ministry of Railways and Government of Maharashtra.

Modernization of Passengers Amenities at Railway Stations
New Delhi: August 19, 2010.
Upgradation/modernization of passenger amenities at Railway Stations is a continuous process. Presently, 1029 stations have been identified for upgradation/modernization under various schemes including Adarsh station scheme.
Works of Upgradation/modernization of stations are undertaken under Plan Head 'Passenger Amenities'. An allocation of `1302 crore has been made under this Plan Head out of Railways own fund for the year 2010-11.
All the works regarding modernization/upgradation of the identified stations under various schemes are planned to be completed by June, 2011.

Ministry of Railways
Railways Plan to Provide Bottled Drinking Water at Cheaper Rates to Passengers
New Delhi: August 19, 2010.
With a view to cater the increasing demand, in addition to the existing Rail Neer plants at Nangloi and Danapur, two additional plants are under commissioning at Ambernath (near Mumbai) and Palur (near Chennai) respectively. Further as per Budget announcement, Railways plan to provide bottled drinking water at cheaper rates to passengers through 6 more water bottling plants, proposed to be set up through Public Private Partnership (PPP0 route.
Out of 168 nominated stations for supply of Rail Neer, it was not supplied to 70 stations between May and June 2010. The demand for packaged drinking water peaks in summer months and priority is given to the supply of Rail Neer in trains, and as a result supply to static units at certain stations other than New Delhi station had to be discontinued in the months of May and June 200 with approval of competent authorities of IRCTC.

Transportation of Edible Salt by Railways
New Delhi: August 19, 2010.
During current financial year i.e. from April-July, 2010 Western Railway has loaded 371 rakes of edible salt as against 359 rakes of edible salt loaded during the corresponding period of last year, registering a growth of 3.3 per cent. Railways is making all efforts to meet the demand for transportation of salt, and have inducted high capacity BCNHL wagons which can carry about 40 per cent of additional cargo n each train. Induction of such train will help in faster evacuation of salt. Railway also inducts BOXN wagons for loading of salt whenever necessary.
Request from the State Government of Gujarat was received to increase number of rakes for transportation of salt from Gujarat.
