Sibal apologises to Anand over citizenship row!

If Viswanathan Anand's Nationality May be Questioned What Should be Destined for Refugees, Tribals, underclasses and Slum dwellers, Minorities in  PRIVATE Sector Monitored Unique Identity Project  Ethnic Cleansing Covered up with Caste Census Super Duper Parliamentary Drama Enacted by Co Opted Slaves of Money Machine Hegemony Manusmriti!World chess champion Viswanathan Anand being denied an honorary doctorate by the Ministry of Human Resource Development questioning his nationality evoked a strong reaction.

Just for his status, Anand is lucky NOT to be DEPORTED as it has been the case for the Resettled refugees in Orissa and elsewhere!

World Chess Champion Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand [ Images ] on Tuesday termed the controversy over his nationality as disappointing but said he does not want to stretch the issue too far and would prefer to move on.But the Partition Victims, Displaced Tribal People and Undreclasses, Minorities and Underclasses Countriwide do suffer from the taruma of being deprived of Citizenship and DEPORTED since the Citizenship amendment Act cancelled Citizenship as Natural Right and violated United nation`s charter of Human rights as well as Interantional laws. I have been writing often on this issue as our people the Black Untouchables have been selected for the Economic Ethnic Cleansing.

"When the whole thing came about it was disappointing but I think by now I understand that these are bureaucratic things which happen and you can see the funny side of it. The silver lining is that people now know that I am really an Indian completely," Anand told TV channels.

I have Warning of this AGENDA Hidden since last years, speaking and writing and the POINT IS Proved. But majority masses under Hiberantion and the Politics so betraying we may NOT Escape the Destiny Predestined in Free Market Democracy!

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday apologised to chess wizard Viswanathan Anand over the controversy on conferring an honorary doctorate to him and made it clear that his nationality was never questioned by the ministry.

Blog: Vishy is more Indian than those who doubt his Indianness

Anand has now agreed to accept the honour, Sibal said. In the wake of media reports that Anand was denied the honour proposed by the University of Hyderabad after the HRD Ministry raised questions over his nationality, Sibal spoke to him over telephone and expressed regrets.

"I told him that the honorary degree could be conferred today itself. He indicated to me that he had some problem about this evening. Then I told him any date of his convenience for the function was okay. He has accepted it," he told a hurriedly-convened press conference here.

Replying to questions on reports that the ministry had raised doubts over the nationality of Anand, who had made Spain his second home for some years now but holds an Indian passport, he said, "There is no question, there is no issue. There is no question of nationality (about Anand)."

He said he had cleared the file on Anand's name on May 22 but there were five other names. "When I went to the Visitor it came back to me with reference to an individual. Then the university event was over. This issue arose when another file came regarding a foreigner. If I had known I would have put my foot down.

"We have dealt with the matter as expeditiously as possible. It is for Viswanathan Anand to decide. He will be conferred the doctorate. He has accepted it," Sibal said.

"Procedural error has led to problems regarding doctorate to Anand...immediate corrective action was taken...I told him that we are sorry for what has transpired," he said.

"It should not take time (to implement such decisions) but sometime it happens," he said.

Hailing Anand for his achievements, Sibal said, "Viswanathan Anand has done India proud like Arjun Atwal (who won a top professional golf championship in the US yesterday). We should be proud of those who climb the heights of global excellence."

Coinciding with the International Conference on Maths currently on here, the University was planning to honour Anand along with Harvard University mathematician David Mumford.

World chess champion Viswanathan Anand may have brought laurels to India many a time but doubts have been cast over his nationality, throwing a dampener on University of Hyderbad's plans to honour him with a doctorate.

The Human Resource Development Ministry at the Centre has withheld clearance for the University's proposal to honour Anand along with renowned mathematician David Mumford of Harvard University here yesterday, coinciding with the International Conference on Maths currently on here.

Hailing from Tamil Nadu, Anand made Spain his second home for some years now but continues to hold an Indian passport.

Even after a series of clarifications, including submission of his passport copy, the ministry has kept the file on hold. But with the clearance being withheld, the ceremony has been put on hold

"The honorary doctorate to Viswanathan Anand has not been stalled or denied. It has only been delayed.

D.V. Sundar, Secretary, All India Chess Federation, termed the decision as ridiculous. "He (Anand) is a Padma Vibhushan. The Government of India has given several cash awards to him and he has taken part in numerous tournaments in his career representing India.

"His parents are in Chennai and he has a home here. He has a base in Madrid (Spain) because chess is played more in European countries. He is an Indian citizen first and foremost."

Indian Political Parties led by the Zionsist Brahamins have done everything to destroy the Black Untouchables and their psyche is inflicted with Inhuman ANTIPATHY against us. But since Anand is such a National Icon, the Oppsition is out of the Den to voice anger once again. But they would be SILENT all over agin if Half of the Population and Majority SC, ST OBC masses do land in the No Men`s Land!
Opposition members in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday expressed unhappiness over the humiliation meted out to Viswanathan Anand by raking up a controversy over the nationality of the chess icon.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Shahnawaz Hussain (BJP) said it was a matter of regret that questions have been raised over the nationality of Anand, who has been the first recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.

Amid cries of "shame, shame" from opposition members, he said it was no way to treat icons like Anand who have been honoured with civilian awards like Padmashree for bringing laurels to the county time and again.

Red-faced over denial of clearance to the University of Hyderabad to confer an honorary doctorate on Anand citing doubts over his nationality, HRD minister Kapil Sibal rang him up yesterday to apologise for the embarrassment caused to him.

HRD ministry accepts what world knows: Anand a proud Indian

TNN, Aug 25, 2010, 01.55am IST

NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD: He's a master with black and white. But as Viswanathan Anand must have just realized, babus in Delhi love grey.

A day after messy moves on the chess champion's citizenship by HRD ministry bureaucrats came to the fore, minister Kapil Sibal said there is no doubt Anand is Indian, not Spanish.

"I have apologized to Anand about this," Sibal said on Tuesday, doing damage control and clearing the road for University of Hyderabad to confer an honorary doctorate on the man who is arguably India's greatest sportsperson ever.

Arjun Atwal holed a six-foot putt on the final hole to clinch victory in the Wyndham Championship and become the first Indian to win on the US Tour.

On a rollercoaster final day at the Sedgefield Country Club, the overnight leader saw his three shot lead evaporate in an event that essentially became a putting contest.
However, birdies at the 14th and 16th got Atwal to 20 under par for the first time and pars at the final two holes were enough to seal the victory and a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
The 37-year-old, who led the first round with a 61, birdied the third and fourth to move to 19 under par but a crowded leaderboard meant more than a dozen players were in with a realistic chance of victory.
Former US Open champion Lucas Glover was the player to emerge from the pack as the Indian's biggest danger, a run of six birdies in the first nine holes seeing the American to the turn in 29.
But from there it was all downhill for the Ryder Cup hopeful, who immediately gave one back at the 10th after hooking his tee shot, and another went at the 14th when he fluffed a chip.

Cold

Atwal's putter had also gone cold and when he failed to get up and down from a bunker at the 12th there were seven players tied for the lead on 18 under par.
That didn't last long though, as Atwal sank a 15-footer at the 14th moments before Justin Leonard canned a third birdie in succession at the penultimate hole.
But the former Open champion gave one back at the final hole, where playing partner David Toms sank a 25-foot putt to set the target at 19-under with a final round of 64.
Atwal got lucky at the par-five 15th when he hooked his second beyond the stands, only for his drop to give him a simple chip to the green, and although his birdie attempt fell just short, he made no mistake at the short 16th following a fine tee shot to take sole possession of the lead.
Another birdie effort just stayed above ground at the penultimate hole, but after missing the fairway at the 18th Atwal fired his second into the spectators' tent behind the green.
Again, the free drop proved to his liking and although his chip came up short, he held his nerve to clinch his first title on American soil with a closing round of 67, while he also became the first Monday qualifier to win the ensuing tournament in 24 years.
"It feels great, I have no words to describe it," said Atwal, a multiple winner on the Asia Tour who had lost his US playing rights in July after failing to secure enough winnings on a medical exemption.
"I just grinded it today. I was so nervous over that putt and so glad it went in."

Anand's parents declined to comment.

Harika disappointed

Chess players in Hyderabad expressed disappointment at the way Anand's nationality was questioned.

Women Grand Master Dronavalli Harika said, "Anand has always played for India and whatever he has achieved has been for our country. He could have easily opted for citizenship of any other country but he preferred to remain an Indian.

"There can be no doubt about his patriotism. I am not sure if the issue is a result of ill treatment or misunderstanding, but it should never have happened."

International Master Lanka Ravi felt that Anand's nationality should never have been questioned. "It has put Indian sports and more importantly, a champion like Anand in poor light for no fault of his.

"He won the world championship for India, not for himself alone. In such a case, officials should have been very careful in responding, especially as this has happened during the International Congress of Mathematicians. It is disgraceful and could have been easily avoided."

Bindra upset

Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra was upset about the treatment meted out to Anand. "Whatever has happened is unfortunate. Care must be taken to respect our heroes who toil for the glory of India,'' Bindra said.

Anand on Tuesday found himself embroiled in a row after the University of Hyderabad delayed its plan to confer an honorary doctorate on him following questions raised by the Union Human Resources Development Ministry over his nationality.

"I have often trained in Spain but I never gave away my citizenship. That's always been clear. So I don't really know why this came up especially after we clarified the matter," he said.

"I don't want to analyse this too much. The mistake happened, the minister has apologised. I think we should leave it at that. I think we should move on," he added.
The four-time world champion Indian said he decided to decline the doctorate for now simply because he was busy and wanted to have a proper ceremony.

"I accepted the minister's apology. There was no issue in that. It was just that the day was simply filled up.

Actually the main reason I came to Hyderabad was for this simultaneous chess game. I had to focus on my commitments here and then it looked like it would be a rushed ceremony so I thought we should do it properly sometime later. So, I will accept the doctorate in due course of time," Anand said.

Anand denied honorary doctorate by bureaucracy

HRD Ministry questions chess champion's nationality; embarrassment to EOC of International Congress of Mathematicians

Viswanathan Anand: "I want my country back."
Hyderabad: The inexplicable bureaucratic stalling by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and the consequent falling through, of the proposal to award an honorary doctorate to world chess champion Viswanathan Anand and Prof. David Mumford of Harvard University has caused a major embarrassment to the Executive Organising Committee (EOC) of the ongoing International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2010 in Hyderabad.
The proposal to honour Mr. Anand had been mooted by the EOC about a year ago. This was enthusiastically supported by the central University of Hyderabad (UoH), which was to confer the doctorate on Monday at a special convocation.
Indeed, Mr. Anand, who is scheduled to play simultaneous chess with 40 mathematicians on Tuesday, arrived in the city on Sunday itself in the belief that the function to honour him was going to take place as scheduled. Though Mr. Anand is supposed to have taken the incident quite sportingly, he is apparently a little upset at the Delhi babudom raising issues about his nationality. "I want my country back," a somewhat annoyed Mr. Anand is supposed to have remarked.
From the sequence of events it would seem that there was some deliberate effort by the MHRD to kill the idea. The germ of the idea, which included asking Mr. Anand to play with mathematicians, was sown as far back as four years ago after the previous ICM in Madrid at a dinner gathering, organised by the Indian Embassy, to which Mr. Anand had also been invited. Following this, the initiative was taken by M.S. Raghunathan, Chairman of the EOC, to write to Mr. Anand seeking his approval and then having the proposal cleared by the EOC as well as the organising committee of the ICM 2010.
After this, the EOC forwarded its proposal to the UoH and the proposal was fully backed by the Vice-Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor, in turn, put up the proposal before the executive bodies of the university. The university Executive Committee (EC) cleared the proposal about six months ago. Meanwhile, the EOC had also conceived of the idea of similarly honouring Prof. Mumford, a world renowned algebraic geometrician from Harvard University and long-term friend and associate of Indian mathematicians.
This was followed by the approvals being cleared by Chancellor R. Chidambaram, which took about three months. The proposals were then forwarded to the MHRD by June 2010, according to Prof. Rajat Tandon of the Department of Mathematics of the UoH, who is also the secretary of the EOC.
This set in motion a continuous battle of wits between the Ministry bureaucracy and the university. MHRD director R.D. Sahay apparently first questioned Mr. Anand's nationality and said the process required clearance by the Home Ministry as well as the Ministry of External Affairs. He apparently also questioned the university on holding a special convocation ceremony just to accommodate the convenience of foreigners!
The EOC rebutted the Ministry's contention on Mr. Anand's nationality and alongside sent all the details of Prof. Mumford. The Ministry questioning Mr. Anand's nationality apparently annoyed his wife so much that she immediately faxed Mr. Anand's passport on July 30. This too was immediately forwarded to the Ministry.
Then began a series of exchanges between the university Registrar and the Ministry with charges being made by the Ministry that the papers sent by the university were incomplete, with the claims of a different document ostensibly missing every time. But after repeated faxing of all the documents, about over two weeks ago, Mr. Sahay apparently finally agreed that the set of documents for the two proposals was complete, Prof. Tandon said.
However, nothing seems to be happening beyond that. This forced the EOC to impress upon the office of President, who is the Visitor to the university, to call for the documents from the Ministry to give the final mandatory signature. But even this did not seem to have had any effect on the Ministry. As a result, the entire proposal had to be shelved late on Sunday night after the EOC gave up all hopes of any chance of a positive result. While Mr. Anand was forced to spend an entire day in his hotel room, Prof. Mumford decided to leave on Sunday night itself for a travel around the country.

Viswanathan Anand, (Tamil: விசுவநாதன் ஆனந்த்; pronounced IPA: [ʋiʃʋəˈn̪aːt̪ən ˈaːnən̪d̪]; born 11 December 1969) is an Indian chess Grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion.

He held the FIDE World Chess Championship from 2000 to 2002, at a time when the world title was split. He became the undisputed World Champion in 2007 and defended his title against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008. With this win, he became the first player in chess history to have won the World Championship in three different formats: Knockout, Tournament, and Match. He then successfully defended his title in the World Chess Championship 2010 against Veselin Topalov. As the reigning champion, he will face the winner of the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship 2012.

Anand is one of five players in history to break the 2800 mark on the FIDE rating list, and in April 2007 at the age of 37, he became the world number-one for the first time. [edit] Personal life

Anand was born on 11 December 1969 in Mayiladuthurai, a small town in Tamil Nadu, India. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to Chennai, erstwhile Madras, where he grew up.[1] His father, Viswanathan Iyer, is a retired General Manager of Southern Railways, and his mother Susheela, housewife and chess/film/club aficionado and an influential socialite. He has an elder brother, Shivakumar who is a manager at Crompton Greaves in India and an elder sister Anuradha who is a teacher at the University of Michigan.[2][3] Anand is 11 years younger than his sister and 13 years younger than his brother.

He was taught to play chess by his mother. He described his start in chess in a conversation with Susan Polgar:

I started when I was six. My mother taught me how to play. In fact, my mother used to do a lot for my chess. We moved to the Philippines shortly afterward. I joined the club in India and we moved to the Philippines for a year. And there they had a TV program that was on in the afternoon, one to two or something like that, when I was in school. So she would write down all the games that they showed and the puzzles, and in the evening we solved them together.

Of course my mother and her family used to play some chess, and she used to play with her younger brother, so she had some background in chess, but she never went to a club or anything like that.

So we solved all these puzzles and sent in our answers together. And they gave the prize of a book to the winner. And over the course of many months, I won so many prizes. At one point they just said take all the books you want, but don't send in any more entries.[4]

Anand did his schooling in Don Bosco, Egmore, Chennai and holds a degree in commerce from Loyola College, Chennai. His hobbies are reading, swimming, and listening to music. He is married to Aruna Anand and lives in Collado Mediano in Spain.[5]

In August 2010, Anand joined Board of Directors of Olympic Gold Quest, a foundation for promoting and supporting the India's elite sportspersons and potential young talent.[6][7][8]

[edit] Controversies

Anand's was denied honorary doctrate on confusions over his citizenship, however later Kapil Sibal, Minister of Human Resource Development apologised and said "There is no issue on the matter as Anand has agreed to accept the degree at a convenient time depending on his availability".[9]

[edit] Chess career

[edit] Early career

Anand's rise in the Indian chess world was meteoric. National level success came early for him when he won the National Sub-Junior Chess Championship with a score of 9/9 in 1983 at the age of fourteen. He became the youngest Indian to win the International Master title at the age of fifteen, in 1984. At the age of sixteen he became the national chess champion and won that title two more times. He played games at blitz speed. In 1987, he became the first Indian to win the World Junior Chess Championship. In 1988, at the age of eighteen, he became India's first Grandmaster by winning Shakti Finance International chess tournament held in Coimbatore, India. He was awarded Padma Shri at the age of 18.

Anand at the Manila Olympiad 1992, age 22

"Vishy", as he is sometimes called by his friends, burst upon the upper echelons of the chess scene in the early 1990s, winning such tournaments as Reggio Emilia 1991 (ahead of Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov). Playing at such a high level did not slow him down, and he continued to play games at blitz speed.

In the World Chess Championship 1993 cycle Anand qualified for his first Candidates Tournament, winning his first match but narrowly losing his quarter-final match to Anatoly Karpov.[10]

In 1994–95 Anand and Gata Kamsky dominated the qualifying cycles for the rival FIDE and PCA world championships. In the FIDE cycle (FIDE World Chess Championship 1996), Anand lost his quarter-final match to Kamsky after leading early.[11] Kamsky went on to lose the 1996 FIDE championship match against Karpov.

In the 1995 PCA cycle, Anand won matches against Oleg Romanishin and Michael Adams without a loss, then avenged his FIDE loss by defeating Gata Kamsky in the Candidates final.[12] In 1995, he played the PCA World Chess Championship 1995 against Kasparov in New York City's World Trade Center. After an opening run of eight draws (a record for the opening of a world championship match), Anand won game nine with a powerful exchange sacrifice, but then lost four of the next five. He lost the match 10½–7½.

In the 1998 FIDE cycle, the reigning champion Karpov was granted direct seeding by FIDE into the final against the winner of the seven-round single elimination Candidates tournament. The psychological and physical advantage gained by Karpov from this decision caused significant controversy, leading to the withdrawal of future World Champion Vladimir Kramnik from the candidates tournament. Anand won the candidates tournament, defeating Michael Adams in the final, and immediately faced a well-rested Karpov for the championship. Despite this tremendous disadvantage for Anand, which he described as being "brought in a coffin" to play Karpov,[13] Anand was able to draw the regular match 3-3, forcing a rapid playoff. However, the rapid playoff was won 2-0 by Karpov, allowing him to defend his FIDE championship.

[edit] World Chess Champion

[edit] FIDE World Chess Champion 2000

After several near misses, Anand won the FIDE World Chess Championship in 2000 for the first time after defeating Alexei Shirov 3½–0½ in the final match held at Tehran, thereby becoming the first Indian to win that title.

He failed to defend the title in 2002, losing in the semifinals to Vassily Ivanchuk. The 2002 FIDE world championship was ultimately won by Ruslan Ponomariov. Anand tied for second with Peter Svidler in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2005 with 8½ points out of 14 games, 1½ points behind the winner, Veselin Topalov.

[edit] World Chess Champion 2007

In September 2007 Anand became World Champion again by winning that year's FIDE World Championship Tournament held in Mexico City. He won the double round-robin tournament with a final score of 9 out of 14 points, a full point ahead of joint second place finishers Vladimir Kramnik and Boris Gelfand.

In 2000, when Anand won the FIDE World Championship, there was also the rival "Classical" World Championship, held by Kramnik. By 2007, the world championship had been reunified, so Anand's victory in Mexico City made him undisputed World Chess Champion. He became the first undisputed champion to win the title in a tournament, rather than in matchplay, since Mikhail Botvinnik in 1948.

In October 2007, Anand said he liked the double round robin championship format (as used in the 2007 championship in Mexico City), and that the right of Kramnik to automatically challenge for the title was "ridiculous".[14]

[edit] World Chess Champion 2008

Anand convincingly defended the title against Kramnik in the World Chess Championship 2008 held between October 14 and October 29 in Bonn, Germany. The winner was to be the first to score 6½ points in the twelve-game match.[15] Anand won by scoring 6½ points in 11 games, having won three of the first six games (two with the black pieces).[16] After the tenth game, Anand led 6–4 and needed only a draw in either of the last two games to win the match. In the eleventh game, Kramnik played the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defense. Once the players traded queens, Kramnik offered a draw after 24 moves since he had no winning chances in the endgame.[17]

On his winning the championship his mother—and his first coach—said "To me, it was like the first chess match he won in a school tournament. It's just the same, only the degree has changed." [19]

Responding to Anand's win, Garry Kasparov said "A great result for Anand and for chess. Vishy deserved the win in every way and I'm very happy for him. It will not be easy for the younger generation to push him aside... Anand out-prepared Kramnik completely. In this way it reminded me of my match with Kramnik in London 2000. Like I was then, Kramnik may have been very well prepared for this match, but we never saw it." [20]

[edit] World Chess Champion 2010

Prior to the World Chess Championship 2010, Anand, who had booked on the flight Frankfurt-Sofia on April 16, was stranded due to the cancellation of all flights following the volcano ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull. Anand asked for a three day postponement, which the Bulgarian organisers refused on April 19. Anand eventually reached Sofia on April 20, after an exhausting 40-hour road journey.[21] Consequently, the first game was delayed by one day.[22]

The match consisted of 12 games. After 11 games the score was tied at 5½-5½. Anand won game 12 on the Black side of a Queen's Gambit Declined to win the match and retain the World Championship. In game 12, after Topalov's dubious 31st and 32nd moves, Anand was able to achieve a strong attack against Topalov's relatively exposed king. Topalov subsequently resigned.

[edit] World Chess Championship 2012

As a result of Anand's victory in the World Chess Championship 2010, he will defend his title in the World Chess Championship 2012, tentatively scheduled to be held in London, England. His opponent will be determined by the winner of the Candidates Matches to be played in 2011.

[edit] FIDE World Rapid Chess Champion 2003

In October 2003, the governing body of chess, FIDE, organized a rapid time control tournament in Cap d'Agde[23][24] and billed it as the World Rapid Chess Championship. Each player had 25 minutes at the start of the game, with an additional ten seconds after each move. Anand won this event ahead of ten of the other top twelve players in the world, beating Kramnik in the final. His main recent titles in this category are at: Corsica (six years in a row from 1999 through 2005), Chess Classic (nine years in a row from 2000 through 2008), Leon 2005, Eurotel 2002, Fujitsu Giants 2002 and the Melody Amber (five times, and he won the rapid portion of Melody Amber seven times). In the Melody Amber 2007, Anand did not lose a single game in the rapid section, and scored 8½ /11, two more than the runners-up, for a performance in the rapid section of 2939.[25] In most tournament time control games that Anand plays, he has more time left than his opponent at the end of the game. He lost on time in one game, to Gata Kamsky. Otherwise, he took advantage of the rule allowing players in time trouble to use dashes instead of the move notation during the last four minutes only once, in the game Anand versus Svidler at the MTel Masters 2006.[26]

[edit] Other results

Anand won three consecutive Advanced Chess tournaments in Leon, Spain, after Garry Kasparov introduced this form of chess in 1998, and is widely recognized as the world's best Advanced Chess player, where humans may consult a computer to aid in their calculation of variations.

Anand has won the Chess Oscar in 1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. The Chess Oscar is awarded to the year's best player according to a worldwide poll of leading chess critics, writers, and journalists conducted by the Russian chess magazine 64.

His game collection, My Best Games of Chess, was published in the year 1998 and was updated in 2001.

Anand's recent tournament successes include the Corus chess tournament in 2006 (tied with Veselin Topalov), Dortmund in 2004, and Linares in 2007 and 2008. He has won the annual event Monaco Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess Championships in years 1994, 1997, 2003, 2005 and 2006. He is the only player to have won five titles of the Corus chess tournament. He is also the only player to win the blind and rapid sections of the Amber tournament in the same year (twice: in 1997 and 2005). He is the first player to have achieved victories in each of the three big chess supertournaments: Corus (1989, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2006), Linares (1998, 2007, 2008), Dortmund (1996, 2000, 2004).

In 2007 he won the Grenkeleasing Rapid championship, which he won for the tenth time defeating Armenian GM Levon Aronian. Incidentally, just a few days before Aronian had defeated Anand in the Chess960 final.

In March 2007, Anand won the Linares chess tournament and it was widely believed that he would be ranked world No.1 in the FIDE Elo rating list for April 2007. However, Anand was placed No.2 in the initial list released because the Linares result was not included. FIDE subsequently announced that the Linares results would be included after all,[27] making Anand number one in the April 2007 list.[28]

Anand won the Mainz 2008 Supertournament Championship by defeating rising star Magnus Carlsen, earning his eleventh title in that event.[29]

[edit] Rating

In the April 2007 FIDE Elo rating list, Anand was ranked first in the world for the first time,[30] and (as of July 2008[update]) he held the number one spot in all ratings lists but one since then until July 2008, the exception being the January 2008 list, where he was rated #2 behind Vladimir Kramnik (equal rating, but Kramnik held the #1 spot due to more games played).[31] He dropped to #5 in the October 2008 list, the first time he had been outside the top 3 since July 1996.[32]

In 2010, Anand announced that he would increase his tournament schedule, beginning in late 2010, in an effort to regain the world number-one ranking from Magnus Carlsen.[33][34]

[edit] Personality

Anand has been viewed as an unassuming, benevolent person with a reputation of refraining from political and psychological ploys as much as possible in order to focus solely on the chessboard.[13] This has made him a well-liked figure throughout the chess world for two decades, evidenced by the fact that Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Magnus Carlsen, all rivals for the World Championship throughout Anand's career, each aided him in preparing for the World Chess Championship 2010.[35][36] Anand is sometimes known as the 'Tiger of Madras'.[37]

It is disappointing but want to move on: Viswanathan Anand

World Chess Champion Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand on Tuesday termed the controversy over his nationality as disappointing but said he does not want to stretch the issue too far and would prefer to move on. "When the whole thing came about it was disappointing but I think by now I understand

that these are bureaucratic things which happen and you can see the funny side of it. The silver lining is that people now know that I am really an Indian completely," Anand told TV channels.
So I don't really know
why this came up especially after we clarified the matter," he said.
"I don't want to analyse this too much. The mistake happened, the minister has apologised. I think we should leave
it at that. I think we should move on," he added.
The four-time world champion Indian said he decided to decline the doctorate for now simply because he was busy and
wanted to have a proper ceremony.
"I accepted the minister's apology. There was no issue in that. It was just that the day was simply filled up.
"Actually the main reason I came to Hyderabad was for this simultaneous chess game. I had to focus on my commitments here and then it looked like it would be a rushed ceremony so I thought we should do it properly sometime later. So, I will accept the doctorate in due course of time," Anand said.

'Insensitive bureaucratic obstructions' to be blamed: varsity

COOL AS EVER: Unfazed by the controversy surrounding him , Grand Master Viswanathan Anand played simultaneous chess with 40 mathematicians at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad on Tuesday. He defeated all his opponents in a game that lasted over three hours. One game was drawn.
HYDERABAD: World chess champion Viswanathan Anand has refused to accept the honorary doctorate, which was to have been conferred on him by the University of Hyderabad (UoH) at a special convocation at the ongoing International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2010 here on Tuesday.
"There is no way he is going to take the award now and during this congress," Mr. Anand's agent, Abraham Kuruvilla, told reporters soon after the ICM's executive organising committee (EOC) and UoH, a central university, issued a strongly-worded statement, criticising the "insensitive bureaucratic obstructions."
EOC secretary Rajat Tandon said all arrangements were made for conferring the doctorate, but "Mr. Anand has changed his mind and he doesn't want any controversy."
Hopes of Mr. Anand accepting the doctorate were rekindled after Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal spoke to him over telephone and apologised, but they were short-lived when EOC chairman M.S. Raghunathan declared that the Grand Master would not be conferred the doctorate "at least in this edition of the ICM.''
In a statement, the EOC and the UoH expressed "sadness" over the fact that a special convocation to confer an honorary doctorate on "one of our greatest sports personalities'' Viswanathan Anand could not be held because of "insensitive bureaucratic obstructions." The EOC said it was deeply saddened by the "unfortunate turn of events" and conveyed its deep apology.
Mr. Anand, who flew in here on Sunday, appeared a little hurt over the developments questioning his nationality.
"I have always played under the Indian flag, held an Indian passport, right from the time I took my first overseas trip. I do not understand the issue. I am here to play against the mathematicians and to enjoy the Congress. So let us leave it at that," the statement quoted him as saying.
The Grand Master, however, was engaged in a more than three-hour contest with 40 mathematicians from across the globe. He was his usual self during a question-and-answer session with them. He lauded 10 opponents who held on tenaciously till the last moment.
The idea of conferring the doctorate was mooted as early as October 2009. The UoH enthusiastically took up the proposal, did the necessary background work and submitted it for clearance to the Human Resource Development Ministry. Despite repeated follow-ups by it, the Ministry did not forward the proposal to the President, who is also the Visitor of the university.

New Delhi:  Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra on Tuesday termed the row over Vishwanathan Anand's citizenship as "disappointing" and said the World chess champion should get the respect he deserves.

"Obviously what has happened is very disappointing. He is a big hero. I don't exactly know the details but he must get all the respect," Bindra told reporters here.

A move to confer an honorary doctorate on Anand by the University of Hyderabad was on Tuesday embroiled in controversy with the Union Human Resource Development Ministry raising doubts over his nationality as he holds an Indian passport but lives in Spain. The HRD Minister Kapil Sibal spoke to Anand and is understood to have urged him to accept the award. The University of Hyderabad then decided to confer the doctorate to Anand on a later date.Share on SocialGmail BuzzPrint

Sibal also apologised to Anand and made it clear that his nationality was never questioned by the ministry.

"I told him that the honorary degree could be conferred today itself. He indicated to me that he had some problem about this evening. Then I told him any date of his convenience for the function was okay. He has accepted it," Sibal told a press conference.
