Kolkata welcomes CWG Queen's Baton Relay!
With monsoon rains bringing the temperature down, hundreds of sports enthusiasts hit the streets here Sunday cheering the Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay that saw the participation of past and present sporting stalwarts.Indian soccer captain Bhaichung Bhutia and former cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly were among a galaxy of sports stars who took part in the relay that began from the gates of the magnificent Victoria Memorial, constructed by then India's British rulers as a tribute to Queen Victoria in 1921. It is now a museum and a prime tourist attraction of the city.
Friendship, unlike other relationships that we get by virtue of birth,is chosen by us and is one of the most pious and valued relationships that we forge. My friend Film Maker Rajiv Kumar Visited us at Home today and we were unaware of the Celebration. Though he did not forget to bring some Roses with him!We have not visited our Home Town Nainital years. 26 th to 28th September are the dates scheduled for Naintal film Festivals, Rajiv suggested to Visit Nainital once again to meet the Old Friends. I am afraid that I may not.Nevertheless, Friendship day, cherishing the spirit of this dynamic relationship, was celebrated with great zeal and lot of fanfare across India on Sunday. While we have lost our roots in the society as well as family, it is amusing to Celebrate digital Friendship days with Social Networking Post Modern! And mind you, it is amidst the background of Economic Ethnic Cleansing with IPL Scam, Swiss bank Accounts , Commonwealth colonisation and Out right Exclusion with enhanced Discrimination!People in New Delhi also celebrated the occasion with lot of gusto and enthusiasm.Apart from honouring friends,a group of people also came together and planted trees to hail their friendship with nature.
The reports from the Himalayas suggest an Imminent disastrous Monsoon once again. Kashmir boils in Political Turmoil as Gorkhaland Movement seems Volcanic. Himachal and Uttrakhand Ecology is destroyed for Energy projects amidst heavy Monsoon. I had to visit Shimla in august and I had to cancel the Programme at the last moment on health grounds. But it proved too heavy a Monsoon there this season. It's the time for kanwarias to flood the highway leading to Haridwar again. Thousands of orange-robed men with bamboo staffs slung across their shoulders carrying decorated earthen pots are marching on National-Highway-58, from New Delhi to Dehradun. While,Once a power surplus state, Meghalaya today has earned the dubious distinction of having the highest electricity deficit in the country at 32 percent.
COMMONWEALTH Games to Replicate IPL Scam and Kalmadi Emerges as Reincarnated Lalit Modi to Divert Tax Payers Money !Just remember how the CGOC Chairman ha d reacted on Aiyer`s questing of the justification of the Event! kalmadi had branded Aiyer an Anti National. What India would achieve in the Games sustaining British Raj Colonialism in the Free Market Democracy, we would see later, but the Skeletons do tumble from the Cup Boards much before the Queens Baton returns New Delhi!Hit by allegations of corruption in the Commonwealth Games, the government today promised to take action against those found guilty even as another venue was inaugurated with a leaking roof.
The Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, who was forced to address an hour-long press conference to rebutt charges of financial bunglings yesterday, was issuing clarifications yet again.
Hundreds of school children in colourful attire waved at the celebrities as West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan flagged off the relay and handed over the baton to the sporting heroes.
The baton, which has already traversed several parts of India, then passed from one player to another and finally Bhutia started running with it as a large number of security personnel virtually ringed him.
"It feels great to be here," said Ganguly.
Asian Games double gold winner athlete Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, ace swimmer Bula Chaudhury, former soccer greats P.K. Banerjee and Chuni Goswamai and hockey Olympian Gurbux Singh were among 38 sports personalities who carried the baton on the relay route.
Leading actors of the Bengali film industry Rituparana Sengupta, Dev and Subhasree were also present and seemed bubbling with enthusiasm as the relay began after the crowd danced to the tune of folk and fusion music.
Joining in the gala, a band of Eastern Frontier Rifles mesmerised the audience with their soothing tunes.
"It's a wonderful experience to be a part of such a grand ceremony," said Rituparana.
The Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton arrived in Kolkata Sunday afternoon from Agartala and was received with much fanfare at the NSC Bose International Airport by state sports minister Kanti Ganguly.
The baton was then put in an open jeep accompanied by famed sportspersons like former soccer star Tulsidas Balaram, athletes Soma Biswas and Sikdar.
The Indian Olympic Association chief insisted that the UK-based firm at the center of a corruption row that has hit OC was recommended by the Indian High Commission despite an embarrassing denial issued by it earlier.
The Indian High Commission had denied recommending A M Films, the little-known UK-based firm which allegedly received lakhs of pounds for providing its "services" during the Queen's Baton Relay in London.
Kalmadi refuted the claim and asserted that the High Commission's protocol official Raju Sebastian made the recommendation and even produced letters indicative of OC's communication with the High Commission.
However, Sebastian has been dubbed in reports as "too junior an official to make any recommendation on behalf of the High Commission".
"The Organising Committee would like to clarify that we had written to Mr Vikrant Ratan, the first secretary (Protocol) of the Indian High Commission, to provide us the list of agencies for transportation, accommodation and other services and their approved rates.
Meanwhile,Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC), Sunday denied the assertion of the Indian High Commission in London that the controversial firm AM Films was not recommended by them and produced letters of communication with them as evidence. The firm is allegedlly being probed by the British government for transfer of 247,000 pounds from CGOC to AM Films for their services during Queen's Baton Relay in October 2009. British authorities allege irregularities in the payment by CGOC.On the other hand,Newly inaugurated stadium for CWG leaks!
Rainwater on Sunday seeped through the roof of a newly inaugurated stadium in India's capital New Delhi, meant for hosting weightlifting matches during the Commonwealth Games. However,Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy, who inaugurated the stadium in the presence of sports minister M.S.Gill,downplayed the leaks and said that it is being monitored carefully.
The minister also lamented that a huge pile of debris, which is lying outside the stadium, has not been cleared yet due to lack of labour force.
The Indian High Commission Saturday denied Kalmadi's claim that it had recommended London-based firm to CGOC.
Kalmadi, who refuted the allegations in a press conference Saturday, hit back Sunday maintaining that it was the Indian High Commission which had recommended AM Films and its sister company for hiring cars and putting up mobile screens and toilets in London for the event.
Kalmadi released three letters, one written by him to the Indian High Commission and the other two which one Raju Sebastian from the mission wrote to the CGOC in response to his letter.
'It is being reported by the media that the Indian High Commission in London has denied that they recommended M/S Am Cars to the organising committee for providing various services for the function. They have also said that Mr. Raju Sebatsian is too junior an official to make any recommendation on behalf of the Indian High Commission,' Kalmadi said in a statement.
'The OC would like to clarify that we had written to Vikrant Ratan, the first secretary (Protocol) of the Indian High Commission, to provide us the list of agencies for transportation, accommodation and other services and their approved rates.
'In response, Mr. Raju Sebastian of the (Protocol Division), giving reference to our mail to the first secretary, informed that the approved vendors for transport art M/S AM Car & Van and the Chauffer Company. He also indicated the approved rates of the High Commission for accommodation and transportation. The copies of the mails received from Indian High Commission (Mr. Raju Sebastian) are enclosed,' Kalmadi said in the statement.
'This clearly indicates that the Indian High Commission had recommended M/S AM Car & Vans to the Organising Committee for the Queen's Baton Rally function in London.'
Graft allegations in Games projects to be examined: Reddy
Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, who heads the Group of Ministers overseeing the preparations for the Commonwealth Games, said the government would 'seriously look into' the allegations of corruption in the construction projects of the Oct 3-14 Games.A Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) report has pointed towards financial irregularities, poor quality of work and fake certificates being granted.
'The CVC has made preliminary remarks. I assure that nobody would be spared. We will seriously look into it,' Reddy said after inaugurating of the Weightlifting venue at the JawaharLal Nehru Stadium complex here Sunday.
Reddy, however, said there is nothing to worry about.
'The Group of Ministers meets every week and looks at every aspect of the Games. I welcome the criticism but at times people exaggerate small issues. I appeal to the media to point out facts and shortcomings so that these can be set right. There is nothing to worry about,' he said.
'This is the last lap of the race. These are inevitable problems and were faced even during the Beijing Olympics. We must not underplay our achievements.'
About the venue, Reddy said: 'This is not only for weightlifting. This is the largest auditorium in Delhi and we can have other events here as well. The money spent for CWG is not meant for the Games alone. The stadiums can be used later.'
The auditorium, with a seating capacity of more than 2,100, will be used as a convention center cum opera house during the legacy period.
Indian watchdog alleges graft in Commonwealth Games works
(AFP) – 3 days ago
NEW DELHI — An Indian anti-corruption body has found a host of problems with construction work for the New Delhi Commonwealth Games, including the use of poor quality materials and dubious contracts.
The chief technical examiner from the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) inspected 15 sites around the national capital and found a number of irregularities and suspect practices by contractors and public bodies.
These include the use of sub-standard concrete and anti-corrosive coatings for steel, fabricated test reports, poor quality control over much-vaunted streetscaping in the capital and the awarding of contracts at inflated prices.
He also found that many organisations were attempting without justification to charge higher rates to finish work in a hurry as the city rushes to be finished on time after repeatedly failing to meet construction deadlines.
"Almost all organisations executing works ... have considered inadmissible factors to jack up the reasonable price," said a statement on the CVC website.
With barely 66 days left to go before the opening of the Commonwealth Games in October, Delhi still resembles a giant construction site, with mounds of debris surrounding dug-up roads and walkways across the city.
"We have found corruption and other procedural irregularities in many Games-related construction projects," an unnamed CVC official told the Press Trust of India news agency.
The corruption could amount to 200 million rupees (4.3 million dollars) in the projects analysed, which included a number of stadiums as well as Games-related bridges and flyovers, the official said.
A number of recent press reports have focused on apparent problems with the construction quality of sporting venues.
In one instance on July 26, just three weeks after it was inaugurated, the ceiling at the Commonwealth Games swimming pool gave way just before a test event was to take place at the venue.
The allegations put pressure on the much-criticised chairman of the Commonwealth Games organising committee, Suresh Kalmadi.
"It's not my business, construction of the venue etcetera is not my business at all and most of the things in the report are about construction," he told the Times Now news channel in reaction.
The 12-day sporting extravaganza involving 71 nations, mostly from the former British empire, is already the most expensive Commonwealth Games in history, with an infrastructure and organising budget of two billion dollars.
Earlier this week, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit threatened to to take severe action against companies if they failed to meet construction deadlines.
"The contractors who fail to complete the projects by August 31 will not only be penalised but also be blacklisted. At the same time they will have to ensure quality of the works," she told reporters."
A total of 42 labourers have died in connection with work on various Commonwealth Games sites in the capital, the government said this week.

RSS worried over use of term 'Hindu terror'
NAGPUR: A rattled RSS has voiced worries over the usage of the term "Hindu terror" and appealed to all Hindu social and religious leaders to work to remove the blot of a terror tag given by some to the religion.RSS ideologue M G alias Baburao Vaidya alleged that the term of Hindu terror was being used to woo Muslim votes in the country in an attempt to defame Hindus.
"The word Hindu terror has earned its place in the media and no one knows who invented it. Though somebody gives credit to NCP president Sharad Pawar, others say it was Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh who has coined the concept," Vaidya wrote in his weekly column in a local Marathi daily.
Vaidya admitted that Abhinav Bharat and Sanatan Sanstha, a Goa based right wing Hindu organisation, have been accused by the government of involvement in violence and some arrests made. But, he noted that none of the accused have been convicted by the courts till date.
Those who had earlier claimed that terrorism has nothing to do with religion were now giving "Hindu terror" tag to the Hindu community to justify that terrorism was not just restricted to Islam but also to other religion (Hinduism), he said.
Vaidya called upon all religious and social leaders to take initiative to remove the terror blot on Hindus.
"Swami Vishweshatitha of Uddipi, Dr Pandya of Gayatri Parivar, noted Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev and Dayanand Saraswati of Coimbatore should tell the government to take steps to ensure that Hindus are not defamed," he said.
"Should we call it Congress terror when 3000 Sikhs were massacred in Delhi during 1984 when riots broke out after the assassination of Indira Gandhi," Vaidya asked.
Vaidya's comments came agaisnt the backdrop of a leading RSS functionary Ram Madhav's reported remarks that the RSS's image could be "sullied" by the propaganda on Hindu terror.
The spotlight has turned to Hindu terror in the months since the 2008 Malegaon blasts.
Madhav has said that discussions are underway within the top brass of RSS on how to come up with a "coherent response" to the charges against Hindu groups.

British PM rules out return of the Kohinoor
MUMBAI MIRROR, Jul 30, 2010, 11.28am ISTNEW DELHI: British Prime Minister David Cameron, who is on a three-day visit to India, has clearly ruled out the return of the Kohinoor diamond to India, saying if such demands were agreed to, it would lead to empty rooms in British Museums.
"I know there is also a great argument about the original provenance of the Kohinoor diamond. I'm afraid this will disappoint viewers, but it's going to have to stay put," Cameron said in an interview to a news channel.
The issue about the fabled diamond , which was mined in the Deccan and is now part of the British crown jewels, had been raised by British MP of Indian origin Keith Vaz just before Cameron began his two-day visit to India.
Cameron, however, pointed out that the return of the diamond would set a precedent, which could lead to the emptying of museums in Britain.
"What tends to happen with these questions is that if you say yes to one, you suddenly find the British Museum will be emptied," he asserted.
Besides the Koh-i-Noor, other Indian treasures acquired by the UK include:
THE AMRAVATI RAILINGS
These limestone plaques once covered the façade of a "stupa" – a temple built to house Buddhist relics – in south-eastern India.
BUDDHA SAKYAMUNI
The Sultanganj Buddha, known as the Birmingham Buddha, is a 2.3m tall bronze statue of the caped deity that was discovered upside-down in a bricked-up cavity by British railway engineer E B Harris in northeast India in 1861. AGENCIES
India wants UK to return Kohinoor, other artifacts
LONDON: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has joined an international network for the return of priceless artifacts taken away during British rule, including the Kohinoor diamond and the Sultanganj Buddha.ASI Director-General Gautam Sengupta said the list of India's treasures held abroad was "too long to handle" and there was a need for a "diplomatic and legal campaign" for their restitution from institutions, including the British Museum, the Royal Collection and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
Speaking to The Independent, Sengupta said that after decades of unsuccessful unilateral lobbying, India was looking to join a campaign with the support of UNESCO, and other countries with longstanding complaints about the foreign ownership of their artistic riches, including Egypt and Greece.
"As efforts so far to reclaim stolen treasures have proved futile, UNESCO support is required for launching an international campaign to achieve this end.
"Not only India, various other countries like Mexico, Peru, China, Bolivia, Cyprus and Guatemala also the voiced the same concern to get back their stolen and looted antiquities and to join the international campaign," Sengupta said.
While underlining the need to be "realistic" about the chances of large numbers of items being returned, Sengupta told the newspaper that a list of "unique items" that should be returned to their home countries was being drawn up by each of the participating countries.
"Once this list is ready, these countries will jointly initiate a series of steps, including a diplomatic and legal campaign to get back the lost treasures," he added.
Rita McLean, head of the Birmingham Museum, said: "We have not received any official request for the return of the Sultanganj Buddha. Any requests for restitution will be treated on a case-by-case basis."
According to the newspaper report, the British Museum said it was satisfied that the objects highlighted by the Indian authorities had been acquired legitimately.

"Khatri Sick" PM — Brahminist darling — is cause of current all-round crisis & confusion
The country is under a terrible confusion and chaos created by its micro-minority ruling class (15%). This crisis is deliberately created by the Brahminists so that we, the victims of their slow, painless blood-sucking operation, will not make out who actually is doing it. This centuries-old operation is being carried out by the enemy keeping us dirt poor. Hence illiterate and unthinking.Only the poverty-stricken Eastern part of India with predominant Tribal and Dalit population — reduced to bones and skin — has started getting angry and protesting. The Brahminist blood-suckers quickly made use of the opportunity and took over the leadership calling them Naxalites and Maoists. Leading them are Brahmins, Reddis and Khammas. It is these oppressors who named our people fighting for human rights as Naxalites and Maoists.
Dantewada massacre: The Dantewada massacre of 76 CRPF (reserve police) men in the dense Chhattisgarh forest on April 6, 2010 — a four-decade-old conflict between the Brahminical state and the starving people of India — brought the whole contradiction once again to the centre stage with parliament opposition members demanding the head of the Home Minister, the Tamil Chidambaram Chettiar.
But in the dust and din raised on the Dantewada disaster the most important point was missed. If the so-called Maoists are the dust poor wretched of the earth, whom the ruling Brahminists have deliberately abandoned and forgotten, the CRPF men who died unsung, unwept also belonged to the same category.
The Brahminist strategy is so fine and flawless that it is making brothers fight brothers as they sip whiskey watching in cool comfort the stupid IPL cricket in metropolitan cities.
Chettiar had the licence to kill: Their enjoyment has no limit. But remember all those who laugh today will have to pay through their nose tomorrow.
The parliament debate on Dantewada massacre was furious. Even the Congress upper caste leaders like Digvijay Singh and Manishankar Iyer rightly demanded the Chettiar's head. But the confident Chettiar defended himself because he had the licence to kill — authorised by his boss.
Gujarati Bania hailed as Mahatma: Did not the same Chettiar play havoc as the Finance Minister? Did he not give free hand to the Marwadi monsters and Dalal Street dagalbajis to loot and murder? Did he not then also have the licence to kill? Except DV, did anybody else in India demand his skull? DV proved right then. And it will prove right again today. The micro-minority Tamil Chettiars belong to a blood-sucker money-lender class. What else we can expect from such a class — except looting, shooting and blood-sucking?
Did not India's blood-sucker ruling class hail the Gujarati Bania as "Father of the Nation" and Mahatma who deceived all of us?
The logic of this land ruled by our blessed Brahminists is truth-seekers like Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who fought and died for the liberation of the oppressed, are called traitors but money-mongering monsters are called mahatmas.
Look at another fellow. Human Resources Minister Kapil Sibal, the darling of the dragons, who came out with two "wonder projects" — a red carpet welcome to foreign universities (DV April 16, 2010 p.7: "Foreign universities will expand India's vast intellectual desert) and free, compulsory and universal education up to 8th standard (DV May 1, 2010 p.10: "Khatri Sick's another false promise"). If the first is to please the Brahminist rulers, the second one is to deceive the over 60% of the innocent masses of India kept illiterate even after 63 years of "independence". Why Sibal is trying to deceive our innocent producers of wealth when no funds are provided to implement the project?
The answer is Kapil Sibal has the permission from his boss.
Israeli hold on Defence Ministry: India's entire Defence setup is controlled by the Zionist-Jew Israel. The Syrian Christian A.K. Antony is the Defence Minister. Muslims who form 20% of India and those outside have been protesting the invasion of Mossad and the Zionist-Jews into India.
The Abhinav Bharat, the Chitpavan super- Hindu terrorist gang, has already announced the setting up its shadow govt. in Israel, the homeland of their cousins, and launched the "Bombay terrorist attack" killing the police officer Karkare. (See also p.23).
S.M. Mushrif in his book has said the Intelligence Bureau was fully aware of the Bombay terrorist attack of 2008.
Why the IB, which is directly under the Khatri Sick PM, found fault with the upright police officer Karkare for arresting the Abhinav Bharat leaders who killed hundreds of Muslims in Malegaon and other places? How did top Army officers permit the Abhinav Bharat to steal RDX explosives which is available only with the Army? Why the Bombay "terrorist attack" was not prevented though the IB was in possession of the information of the attack five days in advance?
Who blocked the IB from informing the Bombay police and plunged Bombay in blood bath?
Show boy made Foreign Minister: Shashi Tharoor, a silly Nair buffoon from Kerala, since dismissed, is too small a person to be mentioned in DV. He was a nuisance to the United Nations as its under secretary in New York. Who brought him to India, gave him a Congress ticket and made him a Minister?
But what is worrying is the selection of a show boy S.M. Krishna as the Foreign Minister who proved to be a total misfit.
Sachar Commission gave the report long, long back recommending reservation to Muslims which they fully deserve as India's most persecuted religious community.
But who came in the way of its implementation?
Women's Reservation Bill: Look at the Women's Reservation Bill to which over 85% of Indians are opposed. The BJP Govt. headed by Vajpayee tried to push it but failed. Who did it this time and suffered humiliation in the Rajya Sabha?
The pure Brahmana Jati Party (BJP) itself has now backed out of the Bill fearing revolt within. Who is behind the Congress Party pushing this notorious Bill cheered by the 15% anti-women upper castes? (DV Edit April 1, 2009: "Democracy subverted: Women's Bill further strengthens Brahminical rule").
This is the problem of having a PM who cannot get elected even to the lowest panchayat post. Is it possible to rule a 1,300-million-strong country getting orders from World Bank Zionist-Jews?
The ruling class is against SC/ST reservations, it is against reservations to Muslims and Dalit Christians. It is against OBC reservation as recommended by the Mandal Commission. When it is opposed to reservation itself as a principle why it is seeking reservation to their women? Look at the mischief. Who is the mischief-maker behind this Bill?
India's total isolation: Who caused the total isolation of India in the world? Why all the countries surrounding India —including the Budhist Lanka and the Hindu Nepal — are hating India while all of them love China and offered it all the facilities? Even the USA, where the Brahminists keep their heart, has started going away after Obama took over as President.
When China has already become a super power, which is feared even by USA and others, why India is treated like a worm? Why every UN agency and govt. of the world is finding fault with India for neglecting the welfare and well-being of its 85% the have-nots? Why India has not fulfilled even a single goal fixed by the UN under the Millennium Development Goals (MDG)?
Who caused the deliberate neglect of this over 85% massive majority producers of wealth? And converted India into a heaven for fascists, frauds and fiends?
The unanimous opinion is the "Khatri Sick".
Vajpayee was much better: The Brahmana Jati Party (BJP) had a two-term rule, also under a multi-party coalition headed by the Vaidik Vajpayee. DV was very critical of his prime ministership.
But compared to the Khatri Sick, we feel the Brahmin Vajpayee was much better.
The entire Brahminical ruling class abandoned their favourite BJP and plumped for the Congress only because it was assured of their blue-eyed boy, Khatri Sick, becoming the next PM. They did it and the PM is serving the cause of these blood-suckers going out of the way — even at the peril of ruining the health and happiness of the people.
Cricket loving crooks: This less than 15% upper castes, who today are busy with their sex-drink-entertainment-cum-multi-million dollar fraud through their stupid cricket, are the greatest admirers of the Khatri Sick.
They love him even more than their darling, pure Brahmin Vajpayee. They manipulated and managed the Congress Party victory only because they were assured that the Khatri Sick would ensure free and uninterrupted opportunity to suck of our blood.(See also p. 25)
Why the poor not getting angry: Yes. The poor, oppressed Moolnivasi Bahujans (85%) cannot and do not know how their blood is being sucked. The entire countryside is devastated. Yet they are sleeping. Slaves enjoying their slavery.
The Muslims (15%) are threatened and silenced by calling them terrorists and thousands thrown into jails.
The SC/ST/BCs (65%) are mesmerised by using two powerful weapons: (1) the Hindu opium called religion which tells the poor, oppressed, starving SC/ST/BCs — who are not Hindu and never Hindu but sworn enemies of Hindu — that their suffering is due to past karma which they can overcome by going to the Brahmin temples, put their little money there and get the blessings of the god (meaning the Brahmins). By this tricky process, the Moolnivasi will become further poor and his money enriching the Bhoodevatas.
(2) TV in every language of India giving day and night entertainment, a poison that will further damage and destroy the brain. Rulers are supplying cheap if not free colour TV to every house so that they stop thinking.
This is what is happening to the "Father of India", Dr. Ambedkar's Moolnivasi Bahujan Bharat.
The Khatri Sick is the cause of all the problems — the fall and slow death of India.
He is fully supported by the Zionist-Jews controlling America because he is their nominee as a former World Bank man. He is faithfully following their dictates causing the slow death of India. As the "Jews of India" do not belong to India, they don't care what happens to this country. Since the Jews and the "Jews of India" are cousins, they are backing him to the hilt — but killing the Bahujan Bharat.
But who will reach our voice to Delhi? We have no media of our own.
Who encouraged the gamblers: The ruling class (15%) is encouraged to become man-eaters, ruthless gamblers and fraudsters by our corrupt Brahminical "national" toilet papers. The latest instance of their highway robbery is the IPL cricket which turned into gambling and looting. How could these rascals get the courage to flout every law of the land — unless they were confident of the blessings from the highest authority of the land?
We have nothing personal against the PM. It is purely ideological. The ruling class may ask: "How can you criticise a person who leads such a simple life?" Yes. We agree. Money corruption is the last among the four varieties of corruption (India's Intellectual Desert, DSA-1999, Rs. 50). The worst form of corruption is intellectual dishonesty which generates all other three types of corruption. That is our charge.

Gill, Reddy downplay concerns over stadiums
Sports Minister M.S. Gill and Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, who heads the Group of Ministers overseeing the preparations for the Commonwealth Games, Sunday downplayed concerns related to the stadiums being constructed or renovated for the Oct 3-14 mega event.
Saying there are no flaws in the structures, Gill has directed officers to oversee any problems and rectify them.
Reddy, who inaugurated the weightlifting venue inside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex Sunday, said they welcome the criticism coming their way but sometimes this was 'exaggerated'.
Explaining the status of stadiums constructed by his ministry through the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Gill said these all are complex state-of-the-art structures with high levels of structural design.
He said CPWD and Sport Authority of India (SAI) officials have been asked to depute a senior officer each in all the stadiums to look out for any faults and rectify them.
'Nothing will be left unattended. We have directed them to post responsible officers till the Games. They will re-check everything and do whatever has to be done,' Gill said.
Even as Gill spoke, rain water trickled down from the dome shaped ceiling of the weightlifting venue, built at a cost of $800 million.
'There is no serious flaw in the roof or in the design of any of the stadiums. These are complex engineering structures. But we are answerable and open to any criticism. If there is anything sub-standard used for the stadiums, we will replace it,' Gill said.
In the last couple of weeks, doubts have surfaced over the quality of the stadiums. A section of the false ceiling at the Yamuna Sports Complex, scheduled to hold the table tennis event of the Commonwealth Games, collapsed after heavy rains.
There were also problems at the S.P Mukherjee Swimming Complex, which hosted a test event last week, as a part of the false ceiling was broken and a swimmer was hurt after a cover on the water drainage system around the swimming pool came off. The vice president of world swimming federation (FINA), Sam Ramsamy, who was here for the test event, has expressed his concern, calling the work 'shoddy'.
The government agencies have drawn a lot of flak for rushing through their work at the last minute which has left many loopholes in the structures. There is debris and construction material lying outside almost every facility.
'I agree that there is debris around the Nehru Stadium, but it the track which is important,' Gill said.
'Delhi has taken this opportunity to host the Games and it should be in the forefront in the 21st century because India has spent lavishly.'
Reddy said the Group of Ministers meets every week and looks at every aspect of the Games.
'I welcome the criticism but at times people exaggerate small issues.
Commonwealth Games: Are we playing a cruel joke?
By Soroor Ahmed, TwoCircles.net,
We know that Delhi has been virtually made beggar-free on the eve of the Commonwealth Games as their presence would show the country in a poor light. But we do not know how much India has begged to host the 2010 sporting extravaganza in its capital? We know that an advanced country like Canada had to wait for 30 long years to pay back the loans it took for organizing 1976 Montreal Olympics. But we do not know how long will India take to return the money it borrows for such events. And finally the entire world knows that today poor Greece is a bankrupt nation and the economists are almost unanimous in blaming the 2004 Athens Olympics for this disaster.
However, thanks to the former Union minister of Sports, Mani Shankar Aiyar, a large section of countrymen and women now know that India will be spending something around Rs 35,000 crore on this 12-day long sporting event between October 3 and 14.
While Aiyar, a columnist and a Rajya Sabha MP of the ruling Congress party, told newspersons outside Parliament on July 27 that he would be unhappy if the Commonwealth Games succeeds others in India may not share his view in toto. But then very few right-thinking people would agree with the rebuttal of the Chairman of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Suresh Kalmadi, who dubbed his remarks as 'irresponsible' and 'anti-national'.
While the expression anti-national definitely needs a better definition Aiyar, as a responsible citizen, has every right to ask "if the Commonwealth Games are successful, they will further organise Asian Games and other events."
In a democracy he has the right to say "Just imagine if we would have spent the Rs 35,000 crore in providing training to the children, we would have won medals in every international sporting event."
There may be no dearth of people who would not appreciate the tone and tenor of his statement but he has emerged as the man who had at least triggered a debate on the wasteful expenditure in the country where 77 per cent survives on less than half a dollar a day––or mere Rs 20.
True there are ways to promote games and sports, but may one ask whether the tally of medals have increased in Olympics or other international competition in the last four decades when we have hosted so many international events––the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games etc. Instead except cricket––and possibly lawn tennis and badminton due to individual brilliance––we have gone from bad to worse. We have lost the game of hockey and our athlete are no match to that of many tiny Third World countries––not to speak of China, Japan or Koreas, and of course West.
We have hundreds of literally starving former sportsmen and women running tea-stalls, pulling rickshaws or driving autos or working as fourth grade employees in any unorganize sector. Yet in this poor country the game of rich––cricket, lawn tennis, badminton––get promotion and sponsor. Nobody bothers to bring back the footballing glory at least at the Asian Games level––though it is the game of poor.
This electricity-starved country is busy building stadium after stadium with flood-light arrangements, most of them to play day-night matches and IPL tournament. Can n't these games be played in the day time as in the past? We do not have electricity for our irrigation and for the study of children. Most of our towns are just areas of darkness. During 2007 Champions Cup Cricket Tournament when Jaipur was hosting day-night match after match villagers in Sriganganagar in the same state, Rajasthan, were protesting for lack of irrigation facilities. In fact one of them even got killed in the police firing.
While we are unable to rehabilitate and pay compensation to lakhs of people displaced for constructing dams in the name of producing electricity we are trying our level best to compete with countries which has surplus-power and water.
Our misplaced priority to compete with West and China is driving many in our establishment crazy. We do not want to learn how badly events like Olympics or World Cups have bled the economy of the countries like Canada, Greece and many others white.
For Commonwealth Games, which is nothing but a symbol of British slavery, we will built beautiful stadiums for many of the games which is not played in India. And we all know what will happen to them after the 12-day sporting jamboree––they will simply fall into disuse.
Like Commonwealth Games the Olympics are nothing but the way to assert the westernism over rest of the world. The very notion of reviving the Games in 1896 in Athens is to restore the glory of European West. Since the Christianized Europe has nothing to boast of in 2,000 years of history it fell back on the pre-Christian pagan era to revive its so-called supremacy. Thus if Olympic reminds the world of the western concept of superiority the Commonwealth Games recalls the so-called grandeur and magnificence of the British Raj. And perhaps no country paid the price of these false pretense as dearly as Greece itself. It was neither in the position of holding such show in 1896 nor in 2004, yet was encouraged and even helped by the western masters to do so for obvious reasons.
But then such huge events are reality now and one can not simply wish them away. What we need is to understand the larger design behind them, take part in them, make players more competitive and win more and more medals.
However, we in India, instead of improving our sports get trapped into the agenda of those who are running the show. We go beyond our means to build colossal infrastructure costing thousands of crores just for the players of other countries to play and win medals.
Foreign journalists can now apply online for accreditation
Following a directive from the Prime Minister's Office, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has initiated steps to simplify accreditation procedures for foreign journalists in India. They will now be able to apply for it online from their respective countries even while applying for a visa, officials said.
'We have taken steps to cut down on the time taken for security clearance,' Neelam Kapur, principal director general, PIB, told IANS.
Since accreditation process for Indian journalists was already available online, it was felt that the facility should be extended to foreign journalists too, Kapur said.
Sources said that the move follows a complaint by a Japanese journalist during the prime minister's press conference in May about problems in getting PIB accreditation for foreign journalist.
The prime minister had told the journalist that he will certainly look into the issue.
The procedures for accreditation of foreign journalists were reviewed about a month back at a meeting of officials of the home, external affairs and information and broadcasting ministries.
Foreign journalists will be required to make an accreditation request when they apply for a long-term journalist visa and it will be forwarded by the respective Indian mission to New Delhi for security clearances.
PM to release stamp on Muslim League leader
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will release a commemorative stamp in honour of late Indian Union Muslim League(IUML) leader Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal here Monday, party president and union Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed said.
Ahamed told IANS that the commemorative stamp would be released by the prime minister at a function at his residence.
Thangal's brother and president of the party's Kerala unit Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, union ministers, ministers from Kerala, MPs and senior leaders of the party will attend the function, Ahamed said.
Thangal, who was considered as the spiritual leader of the party, died Aug 1, 2009.
Kiran Bedi, Ramesh Chandra Agrawal given Tarun Kranti award
Bhopal, Aug 1 (PTI) Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi and Dainik Bhaskar Newspaper Group Chairman Ramesh Chandra Agrawal were today conferred the first Tarun Kranti award at a function here. The award is constituted by Tarun Kranti Manch - a Jain organisation.
Madhya Pradesh Governor Rameshwar Thakur gave away the awards in presence of Digamber Jain Seer Tarun Sagar Maharaj, a release by the organisation stated. Bedi was given the award for women empowerment while Agrawal bagged it for constructive journalism, it added.
CPI(M) welcomes CCS meeting on Kashmir
The state CPI(M) today welcomed the decision to convene a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to discuss the situation in Kashmir and said an immediate political initiative on unconventional lines was the need of the hour. "What is required is immediate political initiative not on routine lines but with an aim to creating confidence among the people of Kashmir," CPI(M) state secretary M Y Tarigami said in a statement here.
He said there was also a need to devise a mechanism that would respond to grievances of the people in the state. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has convened a meeting of the CCS to discuss the situation in Kashmir in the wake of fresh violence in the valley which has claimed the lives of seven persons in the last three days.
'Reduce wholesale tariff for direct-to-home operators''
The DTH association of India today asked telecom regulator TRAI to bring down the wholesale tariff for direct-to-home operators to 10-20 per cent of non-CAS cable tariff from the existing 35 per cent. Welcoming the new tariff order announced by TRAI, the Association noted that the telecom regulator has pointed out that the effective wholesale tariff for a DTH operator was 2.47 times that of non-CAS cable tariff.
"In order to create a level-playing field, we strongly recommend that the ceiling of 35 per cent be brought down to a realistic level of 10-20 per cent of the non-CAS cable tariff," a statement from DTH association said here. The association also demanded the intervention of TRAI in regulating the HD channel distribution as the absence of regulations governing the wholesale tariff for HD channels could make negotiations between the DTH operators and broadcasters "very difficult".
They also opposed the proposed nine per cent increase in the wholesale tariff for cable platform. "The DTH platforms have to compete with the cable platform in the market and the DTH wholesale tariff is linked to the non-CAS cable tariff, so the proposed increase would directly impact the DTH industry," they said.
On July 22, TRAI had announced subscribers of DTH services would be able to pick and choose the channels they want to watch but have to pay a minimum of Rs 150 per month for a bouquet of channels of their choice. In its tariff order for 2010, the broadcast regulator also included provisions to protect the consumers from rise in rates, like no increase in subscription charges in the first six months of enrolling.
The rates can, however, be decreased in those six months and the consumer can opt for any other service provided by the DTH operators. With a view to provide some relief to the operators, the order has fixed Rs 150 as the minimum monthly subscription that a consumer will need to shell out for any number of channels.
The channels of Doordarshan should be a compulsory part of each bouquet, it said.
It's official - Tharoor a divorcee
It's official now. Former minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor has divorced his Canadian wife, Christa Giles.
The parliament record of the Thiruvananthapuram MP, which till last week had Christa Tharoor's name against a column to indicate marital status, mentions his status as divorcee now.
The development comes amidst reports that Tharoor is planning to marry his long-time companion Sunanda Pushkar.
The Malayalam media is full of details about the impending marriage of the former UN diplomat to the Dubai-based businesswoman on Aug 17, which is the Malayalam New Year Day.
Newshounds from the Kerala media say the Tharoor-Pushkar marriage will be solemnized in an auditorium in the premises of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, built by the royal family of Travancore.
Book Talk: Coorg inspires debut novel from Indian financier
When private equity professional Sarita Mandanna set out to write a novel, it seemed natural to set it in the forests of Coorg, a region in southern India the British colonialists called the "Scotland of India." It was where she spent her childhood, surrounded by coffee plantations and the dense jungles that come vividly to life in her saga of star-crossed lovers in the early 20th century."Tiger Hills," just launched in India, was five years in the making for Mandanna and involved hours of research at the New York Public Library.
Mandanna, a vice president of New York-based Equifin Capital, also caused a buzz after reportedly bagging the highest advance ever paid by Penguin India for a debut novel.
Mandanna, who worked in Hong Kong after leaving India and before moving to the United States, spoke to Reuters by telephone about the novel and why she meant it as a tribute to Coorg:
Q: Coorg is almost like a character in the novel. Was it this setting that inspired you?
A: "I do belong to Coorg. The family is from there and we trace our roots back there for generations. I love Coorg with a passion. It's home, a place that I feel absolutely rooted to. A number of debut novelists end up writing what they know and love best and that definitely was the case for me. When I began to write, I knew the setting was going to be Coorg and that would form the backdrop as well. It's also a part of the country that you don't see very often talked about or read about -- that was kind of my ode in a sense to a place that I deeply cherish."
Q: How autobiographical is "Tiger Hills"?
A: "Being from Coorg and belonging to Coorg and having a lot of family and friends there, I was acutely conscious of not mirroring reality in any shape or form at all and kind of inadvertently ending up ruffling feathers or offending someone. It's a purely fictional story, the characters are all fictional as well. Having said that, whenever you create something you always do draw in some form or measure on personal experience or memory or observation. Some of the characters are probably a composite of people I have seen or met or heard of but in aggregate "Tiger Hills" is absolutely imaginary."
Q: When you sat down to write "Tiger Hills," did you have this epic structure in mind - a novel spanning half a century?
A: "I did. I knew I wanted to write something that had a long narrative arc. I wanted it to be the span of one person's life and I really wanted to explore the evolution of that person and people around her as well. The length of it was pretty much set in my head. But the story itself and the characters - it was a very organic process, it almost kind of evolved as I was writing."
Q: "Tiger Hills" has a very cinematic quality to it. Any offers from Bollywood or Hollywood yet?
A: "Nothing as yet but it's interesting that you say that because when I conceived the novel, it was in a very visual format. There were two or three scenes that I saw very clearly in my head. The novel germinated in a very visual format and it was in the actual kind of transforming image to word that the story actually began to take shape. When I wrote the book, it was like I saw this movie first and transcribed that to paper."
Q: Tell us about your research for the novel.
A: "The whole process took over five years to do. Research included talking with people -- great grand aunts, people well into their 90s, talking about their childhood and just having them talk and trying to recreate this period. The other thing was looking through old Coorg folk songs and finding one piece about hunting or something like that and using that."
Q: Where did you do your research?
A: "I spent a lot of time in the New York Public Library going through memoirs of people who had lived there at that time. Memoirs of planters, these huge dreary books on coffee planting and I would pore through them, trying to get something that I could use out of that. The physical backdrop of Coorg, I was fortunate there because a lot of the facade hasn't really changed. It's only now that Coorg is becoming increasingly commercialised and a tourist destination."
Q: How did you balance writing with your work as an investment banker?
A: "I was actually doing private equity which also was long hours. It wasn't an easy process. I did it because I wanted to. It was pretty much excluding everything else from my life. It was just work and working on "Tiger Hills." I began sleeping very little. Towards the end, I was surviving on three-four hours of sleep a night, working constantly over the weekends as well and every other spare hour spent at the laptop working on the novel."

Indian economy moving fast towards $2 trillion mark
The Indian economy would grow to $1.72 trillion in 2011-12, moving closer towards the $2 trillion mark, according to an assessment by the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC).The country's gross domestic product (GDP) at the market and current prices was measured at $1.31 trillion in 2009-10 and is estimated to be $1.52 trillion in the current fiscal, the PMEAC said in its latest economic outlook.
Pegging the GDP growth at nine%, the economy would reach a level of $1.72 trillion in 2011-12, it said.
If the nine% growth trend is maintained, India would become $2 trillion economy in 2013-14 fiscal.
In the assessment, the PMEAC, headed by noted economist C Rangarajan, said that it is imperative for India "to preserve conditions that will enable it to return to the 9% growth trajectory".
After slowing down to 6.7% in 2008-09 and 7.4% in 2009-10, the Indian economy is projected to expand at 8.5% this fiscal and by nine% in 2011-12.
According to experts, services and manufacturing sectors will remain the key drivers pushing the coveted growth to $two trillion mark.
"Services sectors particularly transportation and telecom sectors will lead the growth. Rising income levels and aspirations of people will further the industrial output," CRISIL's chief economist D K Joshi said.
In the first two months of current fiscal, the industrial production recorded an annual growth of 14%. "The lead indicators of service sector also suggest increased economic activity," Reserve Bank Governor D Subbarao said in the first quarter credit policy review.
If the tax reforms are implemented as planned from next fiscal, the economy would get further push.
"The gain from GST will propel the country from one-trillion dollar economy to two trillion-dollar economy in a short span of time," finance minister Pranab Mukherjee recently said.
Before the global economic slowdown since 2008, the Indian economy grew by over nine% for three years in a row from 2005-06 to 2007-08 and expansion was maintained by industry and services sectors.
