Indian Railways Carry 218.25 Million Tonnes of Freight During April-June 2010

New Delhi: July 12, 2010.

 

Indian Railways have carried 218.25 million tonnes of revenue earning freight traffic during April-June 2010. The freight carried shows an increase of 5.16 million tonnes over the freight traffic of 213.09 million tonnes actually carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 2.42 per cent.

 

During the month of June 2010, the revenue earning freight traffic carried by Indian Railways was 71.85 million tonnes. There is an increase of 0.32 million tonnes over the actual freight traffic of 71.53 million tonnes carried by the Indian Railways during the same period last year, showing an increase of 0.45 per cent.

Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production and Use-based Index (Base 1993-94=100) for the month of May, 2010

New Delhi: July 12, 2010.

 

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of May 2010 have been released by the Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The General Index stands at 312.6, which is 11.5% higher as compared to the level in the month of May 2009. The cumulative growth for the period April-May 2010-11 stands at 14.0% over the corresponding period of the previous year.

 

2.            The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of May 2010 stand at 199.4, 335.3, and 252.2 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 8.7%, 12.3% and 6.4% as compared to May 2009. The cumulative growth during April-May, 2010-11 over the corresponding period of 2009-10 in the three sectors have been 10.2%, 15.1% and 6.6% respectively, which moved the overall growth in the General Index to 14.0%.

 

3.            In terms of industries, as many as fifteen (15) out of the seventeen (17) industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-1987) have shown positive growth during the month of May 2010 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. The industry group 'Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery and Equipment'  have shown the highest growth of 39.8%, followed by 27.6% in 'Other Manufacturing Industries' and 26.9% in 'Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except cotton)'.  On the other hand, the industry group 'Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures' have shown a negative growth of 5.7% followed by 3.0% in 'Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products'.

 

4.            As per Use-based classification, the Sectoral growth rates in May 2010 over May 2009 are 7.9% in Basic goods, 34.3% in Capital goods and 10.2% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 23.7% and 2.4% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 8.2%.

 

5.            Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for May 2010, the indices for April 2010 have undergone the first revision and those for February 2010 have undergone the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. (It may be noted that revised indices (first revision) in respect of March 2010 have already been released in June 2010 and these indices shall undergo final (second) revision in August 2010).

 

6.            Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of May 2010, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
