MANI SHANKAR AIYAR LED BUSINESS DELEGATION TO BANGLADESH

Kolkata, July15, 2010

Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar, MP, led a 33 member business delegation to Bangladesh from 10-14 July, 2010. Addressing a press conference at the end of the tour, today, in Kolkata, Shri Aiyar termed the outcome of the visit as "very satisfactory".  33 leading businessmen of North Eastern states participated in the delegation. The visit was jointly organized by Merchants' Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata and the Indo-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and associated chambers in Bangladesh.

Shri Aiyar defined that the idea of taking the delegation to Bangladesh was to invite all Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to invest in any of the eight North Eastern states and not only in West Bengal. Shri Aiyar underlined that the Government of India's intention is to put North Eastern region in the arrowhead of development. The delegation met the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Smt. Sk. Hasina and the Shipping Minister and the Commerce Minister of Bangladesh. A press note issued by the Bangladesh side at the end of the visit quoted the Prime Minister Smt. Hasina as saying " All roads, rail and river connections with India is being revived in order that Bangladesh reap the benefits of being a natural transit country", Shri Aiyar pointed out.

It was agreed that the next plenary of business persons from India and Bangladesh would be held in Agartala within the next six months.
