KPT TO CONSTRUCT DEEPER DRAFT PORT NEAR SAGAR ISLAND

Kolkata, July 6,2010

 

The Kolkata Port Trust (KPT) will construct a Container Terminal in Diamond Harbour, near Kolkata, four berths at Shalukkhali, near Haldia and a Deeper Draft Port at the vicinity of Sagar Island. These projects were announced by the Minister of State for Shipping, Shri Mukul Roy at a press conference in Kolkata today. Shri Madan Lal Meena, the newly appointed Chairman of  KPT was also present on the occasion. The work of the Container Terminal at Diamond Harbour and the Haldia Dock-II at Shalukkhali are expected to be complete by December, 2011, the Minister added.

 

For both these projects, Shri Roy informed that the Railway Minister has generously agreed to provide all kinds of cooperation regarding rail connectivity. The Haldia Dock-II project at Shalukkhali is expected to cost Rs.580-600 crores, the Minister stated.

 

A feasibility study team under the Chairmanship of Secretary, Ministry of Shipping has already been constituted for the proposed Deeper Draft Port near Sagar Island. Shri Roy iterated that for this project also, the Railway Minister has agreed to cooperate in providing rail-road connectivity upto Kachuberia via Kakdwip and Lot no. 8. A meeting between Chairman, KPT and Chairman, Railway Board to discuss modalities of rail-road connectivity has also been fixed by the Railway Minister in New Delhi on Thursday, Shri Roy underlined.

 

The Minister of State for Shipping also informed that on Friday, Kolkata Port Trust will sign an MoU with Kolkata Municipal Corporation for undertaking the beautification project of Kolkata riverfront from Kashipur to Garden Reach.  The Kolkata Dock Labour Board has merged with the KPT from today and thereby benefitting 7000 pensioners and around 340 employees of the Dock Labour Board, the Minister stated.
