KASHMIR MARTYRS DAY – July 13th

Washington, D.C. July 13h, 2010.

Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Executive Director, Kashmiri American Council/Kashmir Center, made an imperative appeal for the world powers to recognize the long-standing wishes and asperitaions of the Kashmiri people as they observe Martyrs Day today, July 13th.  Kashmiris, throughout the world, will observe the Kashmir Martyrs Day to reaffirm their resolve to continue their struggle for self-determination and pay homage to the 100,000 innocent men, women and children killed brutally within the past 20 years.

Dr Fai, commenting on the tragic day, stated `It was on July 13, 1931, that the foreign occupying Dogra troops shot dead 22 Kashmiris, in cold blood, in front of Srinagar Central Jail.' Since that ominous day, Kashmiris have organized peaceful protests,  seminars and conferences throughout the world.  In Srinagar, `a massive march will take place towards the martyrs' graveyard at Naqashband Sahib.'  This march has been approved by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as well as Syed Ali Gilani and Mohammad Yasin Malik. These leaders have agreed that, after reaching the martyrs' graveyard, the people will continue their march towards the United Nations Observers' Office in Sonawar.  Commenting on the scheduled march, Dr. Fai reiterated `that the United Nations must recognize the legitimate Kashmiri demand for self-determination.'

Dr. Fai appealed to the world powers to persuade India to release immediately Mian Abdul Qayyum, the President of Kashmir Bar Association and other leaders including Syed Ali Geelani, Shabir Ahmed Shah and Ghulam Nabi Sumji.

The Kashmiri American Council is committed to finding a just and lasting peace to the Kashmir dispute through a fair and impartial plebiscite and urges the international community to seize this moment. It urges an inquiry into the murder and rape of Asiya and Neelofar Jan of Shopian.  As well, the KAC wishes to enter into public record that India has not undertaken investigations into the unmarked and unnamed mass graves in Kashmir. Lastly, the KAC urges an impartial investigation into the recent brutal murders of 17 young men and women in the preceding few weeks.
