Doctors, Lawyers Protest Kashmir Killings

"Asking the world community to awaken its conscience on the persecution in Kashmir where, according to him, even young boys were being imprisoned under draconian laws, Ronga called for global pressure on India to uphold human rights."

Srinagar, July 23, KONS: Even as shops and businesses remained closed in Kashmir on Saturday as well, doctors and lawyers held protest demonstrations against the killing of civilians in police and paramilitary action, with the legal fraternity threatening fast-unto-death unless the detained leaders of the High Court Bar Association were released.
Nearly 12 persons were injured and half-a-dozen cars damaged in violent incidents in Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag, while curfew was imposed in Kupwara to prevent demonstrations, even as the police rounded up three more separatist leaders belonging to the Muslim League.
In its ongoing "Quit Kashmir" campaign launched against a long series of civilian killings, the Hurriyat (G) had asked the valley's doctors and lawyers to register their protest today with public demonstrations to "convey to India that Kashmiris were determined to secure their legitimate rights."
Doctors from the Government Medical College here took out a procession from the campus decrying civilian killings and state terrorism.
Carrying placards bearing slogans for freedom and against mass killings, the doctors marched on the road, resisting attempts by the police to stop them.
But the marchers dispersed after pressing on with their procession for some time.
Doctors and paramedical staff of other medical colleges and government hospitals also held protests against civilian killings.
Kashmir's lawyers began a march from the lower court complex here, but the police padlocked the main gain, preventing the procession from spilling out into the streets.
The lawyers, carrying pro-freedom placards, held strong demonstrations, and demanded the release of their president, Mian Abdul Qayoom, general secretary, Ghulam Nabi Shaheen, Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, and other pro-freedom leaders and activist.
The former Bar Association president, Nazir Ahmad Ronga, said that lawyers were being targeted under a systematic conspiracy to stifle voices raised against human rights violations.
Asking the world community to awaken its conscience on the persecution in Kashmir where, according to him, even young boys were being imprisoned under draconian laws, Ronga called for global pressure on India to uphold human rights.
Ronga demanded the release of Qayoom and Shaheen within twenty four hours, failing which, he said, that lawyers would go on a fast-unto-death for which the government would be entirely responsible.
Meanwhile, Srinagar remained free of government restrictions, and people, particularly in the old city quarters, ventured outdoors without being stopped by forces personnel deployed in the streets.
In the afternoon, stone-pelters were reported to have appeared in Fateh Kadal and Bohri Kadal and targeted forces personnel present in the areas.
The latter resorted to severe cane-charging and tear gassing, chasing away the violent mobs, and imposed strict curbs in the localities to prevent violence from breaking out again.
Though shops and business establishments remained closed today as well and public transport continued to keep off the roads, the streets were busy with private vehicles.
