NO Sympathy for the Toiling Masses in the Hegemony Politics of Death, Disaster, Purchasing Power, Ethnic cleansing and Global Phenomenon of Exclusion and Annihilation in the FREE MARKET BRAHAMINICAL Zionist Democracy!Theories of Political Conspiracy and Maoist Menace Endorsed by the Ruling Class Intensifies the Monopolistic Aggression with Further SEGREGATION!Apart from the National Experience of Naxal Repression, Sikh Genocide, Babari Mosque Demolition and Gujarat Genocide, I have Specific Personal Eyewitness Experiences of Riot Torn UP. How Political and corporate Interests VICTIMISE the Masses,we all know. Mamata is Correct alleging Political conspiracy but Neither as the Railway Minister of India nor as TMC Supremo, she may avoid her own responsibility. The Sabotage is Clear. Who did it? Railway FIR is quite as vague as the Railway Saftey. TMC Politicians as well as Intellectuals have launched an all out attack against CPIM and do not mention Maoists anywhere, in any Circumstances. Whether the Maoists have committed the Crime against Humanity, Irrespective of this TMC has a soft Corner for the Maoists, it is quite clear. Eventually, if Political interest on the eve of corporation Elections is in question, let me clear, Mamata got the space and time to Campaign even after the deadline past, but the TMC Intellectuals had to end their Press Conference abruptly interrupted by election Commission. In ultimate result, TMC has got the best Mileage in comparison to the Rival Marxists! PCPA leaders including Chhatradhar Mahato had been in alliance with TMC, it pays back Mamata with her Coin and BUCK transferring Nullifies , thus.Conclusively, the Political Parties XYZ have NO sympathy with the Masses and gets MILEAGE in any event or accident! It is proved once again! One of my SCRIBE friend prescribes CARPET Bombing for the UNCIVILISED Tribal Humanscape who stands against the State Power in Insurgency. Unfortunately, Indian Brahaminical Policy makers do follow  this line aborting Democratic Political Process!

It was Nostalgia quite Relevant which Enveloped me this morning as I got a Phone Call from Mumbai to which the Unfortunate Express Train Gyaneshwari Express Ambushed was Destined. And the Man Calling is a Mainstream Film Maker working on a Feature Film with Mithun Chakrabarti. Gaurav launched in JNU, New Delhi in 1990 after the suicide of the Dearest Poet. Gaurav despite living in kolkata is rooted in Banras and Bhojpuri Culture but entering JNU, he did know NOTHING about the Poet philosopher. But he got almost THREE Hundred Letters addressed to Gorakh Pandey which obliged him to know the Poet. No, as a film maker, he wants to Put Gorakh`s songs and Poems on Celluloid. We discussed One hour and Over and Sabita was Irritated!

Dear Gaurav Pandey Please read the Full text or Visit my Blogs to have the Poems and songs of Gorakh pandey!

It was Nostalgia afresh. The Prospective seems to be refined as the tragic suicide heralded Neoliberal Age as well as Free Market democracy. Most Amusing is the fact that Gorakh in his poems and songs did address the Global Phenomenon as he was deep rooted in Folk and Rural Excluded India despite being a Brahamin. He was every Intimate, informal and a TRUE Existentialist but he could Involve with the Dreams of revolution. He was quite an OUTSIDER in JNU as well as CPIML Parliamentary Politics which alienated him from Life as being a Philosopher by character he was Absolute Introvert to cope with the Developments! We did discuss a lot.In those days and during following decades we did treat Mahashweta Di as our lighthouse generation after Generation.

But the roles are changed meanwhile as the Romance with revolution turned out to be Total surrender to the Hegemony politics in Compromising Position! I know NOT what our dearest Gorakh could have done these days if he were ALIVE with Rajesh Rahul around!

Meanwhile, I had an Intense debate with my Co Passengers during one Hour Journey in Princep Ghat down local with some heated Exchange, Most of the People do understand the Political Drama and the Hidden agenda but they have NO Access to the process of Policy Making and legislation. Parties and Trade Unions remain Silent on Anti Trade Union Action of Air India management. Some TMC and CPIM elements did defend their leaders as we exposed them!

Mamta denies Maoists hand in mishap! The motorman of the Gyaneswari Express on Saturday filed a complaint with the Jhargram GRP against "unidentified miscreants" for the railway disaster in West Midnapore district.

Jhargram GRP superintendent of police Shankar Chakraborty said that that the complaint was filed "against unidentified miscreants" under sections 150 (maliciously wrecking or attempting to wreck a train) and 151 (damage to or destruction of certain railway properties) of the Railway Act.

Chakraborty said that the driver B K Das had also mentioned an explosion at the time of derailment.

The train derailed on Friday after being attacked by the Maoists in Jhargram, killing 98 people.

South Eastern Railway officials in Kolkata said the driver has mentioned that he had heard the sound of a blast and a felt a big jerk after which he applied the brakes.

The officials said that Das had handed over the complaint on Friday to the officer-in-charge of the Jhargram Railway Police, who could not register it immediately.

On whether Das had named the Maoists in his FIR, they said, "The driver has mentioned what he has experienced. How will he know who carried out the blasts?"

The DGP had also also spoken to Das on Friday, they said.

Railway minister Mamata Banerjee had on Friday spoken of a "bomb blast" on the railway tracks before the express went off the tracks between Khemasoli and Sardiya stations, 135 km from Howrah.

She had also mentioned that TNT and gelatine sticks had been found at the accident spot.

The DGP Bhupinder Singh had said that pendral clips were open along a 50-metre stretch at the accident spot and the blast theory was not confirmed.

Inspector general of police (law and order) Surojit Karpurokayastha said that according to preliminary investigation, fish plates were found removed at the derailment site.

In a Contrasting Statement issued in the first press conference after West Bengal train mishap by Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee, she completely backtracked from her yesterday's comments of a Maoists hand in the derailment of Mumbai bound Howarh-Kurla express.

In the press conference instead of giving any further inputs on Maoists hand in the incident she completely ignored the issue and tried to play political games by putting the blame on a political conspiracy for the incident.

It seems she is trying to get political mileage by blaming her political opponents ahead of the civic polls in West Bengal. Though she herself said that political interests should not be entertained out of this accident but now she herself seems to have forgotten her own medicine which she was giving to others.

Mamta also denied any kind of sabotage caused to the track as she said it is not possible to remove fish plates from that track which fixed with perfection.

In the meanwhile, the death toll is still on arise and has gone up to 137 as several people are still trapped inside the mangled coaches and the bodies are still being recovered from the wreckage of this coaches.

Moreover, the driver of the derailed train has filed an FIR and said in his statement that he heard a explosion on the track before the train came off track.

On the other hand,Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Friday said the train crash near Jhargram was caused by a sabotage engineered by Maoists and asked his administration to sensitise the security force for intensifying operation against the ultras.

"This is not the time for politics, the state government and the Railways are working together for the rescue of the train passengers," Bhattacharjee said. The Chief Minister was scheduled to address a meet-the-press programme organised by the Kolkata Press Club. But Bhattacharjee declined to take any question on political issues.

"As per the initial reports, the Maoists have done this. The operation against them will be intensified and all-out efforts will be made to free the state and the country from this danger," Bhattacharjee told reporters. "This is a difficult job but the government is confident to confront them."

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday alleged that there was a political conspiracy behind the Gyaneshwari Express disaster in West Midnapore and said the Centre has agreed for a CBI probe into it.

"From the Railways, we have requested the Union Home Ministry for a CBI investigation into the incident since it was in Jangalmahal where joint operation (against Maoists) is on. We have already sent a letter and the Centre has agreed to order it," Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata.

Without mentioning names she said, "Whoever did it, it was a political conspiracy. The accident has happened two days before the (civic) election. One may be politically against us, but I feel bad that the way the incident was engineered to fulfill one's political interest."

Sources in Delhi said the CBI is likely to probe the derailment which claimed over 100 lives and the Home Ministry is in touch with the Railway Ministry and the West Bengal government to hand over the investigation to the agency to unravel the conspiracy behind it.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) on Saturday lashed out at Trinamool Congress leader and railway minister Mamata Banerjee over the West Bengal train tragedy, saying she was seeking to shield the real culprits, suspected to be Maoists, with an eye on the upcoming civic polls in the state.

CPM leader Sitaram Yechury, in a hard-hitting statement, charged the railway minister of "cynically using" the train tragedy, in which more than 100 people were killed, for "petty partisan interests".

"The Union railway minister is seeking to cover up for the serious lapses of her leadership in the railway ministry and its failings in this tragic episode," he said.

He said Banerjee and sections of the pro-Trinamool Congress intellectuals in West Bengal were using the situation for partisan politics to "influence public opinion on the eve of the municipality elections in West Bengal".

"Instead of joining the collective efforts to provide relief and assistance to the victims of the recent ghastly rail accident in West Midnapore, sections of the pro-Trinamool Congress intellectuals in West Bengal have mounted an absurd and insidious charge against the CPM and the Left Front government that they conspired to cause this accident," Yechury said.

"This is reminiscent of Hitler and Nazi fascists setting the German Reichstag on fire and arresting Dimitrov, General Secretary of the Communist International on that charge. This was followed by a general witch-hunt against the Communists in Germany," the CPM politburo member said.

What is more surprising is that the Union railway minister has virtually echoed similar charges against the CPM and the Left Front government in West Bengal, Yechury said.

"As the railway minister it is her basic duty, to be discharged under the oath of our Constitution that she took while assuming office, to inform the country about the ministry's preliminary observations on the cause of the accident."

"She has rather chosen to shield the actual culprits by suggesting that the Maoists may not be behind the sabotage. This is indeed strange that she is saying all this while continuing to demand a CBI enquiry when the state government has already initiated a CID enquiry," he said.

He said the railway minister continues to maintain that there was a blast that led to the derailment, while the Union home minister has denied that possibility.

"It is clear that the Union railway minister is seeking to cover up for the serious lapses of her leadership in the railway ministry and its failings in this tragic episode. During the five months of this year the number of major railway accidents has been more than in any calendar year since 1980," he said.

"It is indeed tragic that instead of joining the country in the wake of a national tragedy these elements are cynically using the situation to further their petty partisan interests.

"All this is being done in order to influence public opinion on the eve of the municipality elections in West Bengal.

"The politically conscious people of West Bengal will surely see through this conspiracy and give a fitting rebuff to these diabolical designs," he added.

Pro-Trinamool supporters' meeting stopped by election commission

The West Bengal election commission today intervened and stopped a press conference held by pro-Trinamool Congress supporters at the Press Club after they pointed fingers at rival CPI(M) for the Gyaneshwari train disaster in West Midnapore district.

Commission secretary S N Roy chowdhury said the observations expressed at the press conference was in violation of the election code of conduct under section 126 of the People's Representation Act.

He said the commission chairperson Meera Pandey took
action after it received complaints about the observations made at the press conference and contacted the Kolkata policecommissioner Goutam Mohan Chakraborty.

The police commissioner lodged a complaint with the Maidan police station against the organisers, he said.

The supporters including painter Suvaprasana, Jogen Chowdhury and theatre personality Saoli Mitra, without naming the Marxist party, said the disaster had taken place just two days before the civic election, slated for tomorrow.

They condemned the disaster, but kept silent on the involvement of Maoists.

When journalists sought to put questions to them, they said there was not enough time for giving replies.

This made journalists insist that they were bound to answer questions as they were making one-sided allegations, leading to a heated exchange between the scribes and the TC supporters.

The police, at the direction of the election commission, then stepped in to end the programme.

The press club in a statement condemned the entry of the police.

Stating that police could not force entry into the club without permission from the authority concerned, it said the state election commission had no right to stop any exercise in the club as it was not a political forum where events were staged for political ends.

Carnage on tracks: Worst ever Maoist attack

The toll in the Mumbai-bound express train derailment by Maoists rose to 110 on Saturday morning as more bodies were pulled out from the wreckage of the mangled coaches with rescuers working throughout the night.

Kolkata: The West Bengal police tonight said Maoists were behind the Gyaneshwari Express derailment and claimed to have identified the culprits behind the incident that has claimed 141 lives so far.

"Those who did it are all members of Maoist squads. We have identified them and search is on to nab them," director general of police Bhupinder Singh told reporters in Kolkata.

He said two members of a Maoist squad, who were recently released on bail, had led the operation.

"We have information that the two, along with others of the squad, had gone to the site on the night of the incident and had opened the pendral clips and fishplates before the derailment occurred," he said, adding the Maoists also took help of the PCPA.

In reply to a question, he said that investigators probing the incident have collected a number of samples from the site and have not come across evidence of any explosion as claimed by the driver of the express train.

Besides the CID and the state police teams, a team of forensic experts were also at the site, he said.

Twelve railway linesmen posted in the Khemasuli-Saridha area were being questioned by investigators, the official said.

Asked to comment on the silence by Maoists following the incident, he said, "They speak only when they kill the police. They remain silent while killing civilians. They are waging a war against the state."

Thirteen coaches of the passenger train derailed in the wee hours on Friday as portions of the track was missing. A goods train coming from the opposite direction rammed into five of them, causing the maximum casualties.

Railways give in to Maoists: No passenger trains in night

New Delhi: Not keen to take any chance in view of observance of 'black week' from May 28 to June 2 by Maoists, Railway Ministry has decided to suspend running of passenger trains for seven hours in the night in Naxal- affected areas during that period.

Railways give in to Maoists: No passenger trains in night

The decision came after Maoists derailed the Howrah-Kurla Gyaneshwari Express in West Midnapore district of West Bengal in the wee hours of Thursday.

Passenger trains will not run from 10 pm to 5 am between Kharagpur-Tatanagar and Kharagpur-Adra sections of South Eastern Railway and the suspension of night run will remain in force till 5 am on June 3, the Railways said in a statement.

A day after the railway disaster, some mail and express trains on the section are running late or are being diverted, the statement added.

Army officer booked for civilian killings in Kashmir

Srinagar: An Indian Army major and four other people, including a Territorial Army soldier, have been booked for the murder of three civilians in a staged gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir April 30, police said Saturday.

The army said it will initiate a probe. The state government has already ordered a magisterial probe.

The bodies of the three civilians -- Shahzad Ahmad Khan, Riyaz Ahmad Lone and Muhammad Shafi Lone -- were Friday exhumed from a graveyard in Kalaroos village of Kupwara district and identified by their relatives in the presence of a magistrate.

Bashir Ahmad, a former special police officer, and his accomplice Fayaz Ahmad were arrested for the disappearance of the three men belonging to Nadihal village in Rafiabad of north Kashmir.

An angry mob in Nadihal village Saturday torched Lone's house.

Abbas Hussain Shah, a soldier of the Territorial Army, who is the kingpin of the conspiracy, was also arrested Saturday, police said.

"Sustained interrogation of Lone and Ahmad unravelled the entire conspiracy. Abbas Hussain Shah, a jawan of the territorial army, is the kingpin of this nefarious conspiracy," a senior police officer told IANS here.

"He, on the behest of an army officer (major), conspired with Lone, Ahmad and Abdul Hamid Bhat to lure the three civilians. They were promised a wage of Rs.2,000 per day for working as porters for the army in the Machil sector of the Line of Control (LOC) where the unit of the involved major was posted," he said.

"After they fell into Hussain's trap, the three civilians were taken to Sogam village in Kupwara where a vehicle was waiting for them to be taken to the LOC for the fake gun battle," he added.

Police sources also said police had become suspicious of the genuineness of the LOC gunfight in Machil sector April 30 when the bodies of the three slain people were handed over to them for burial.

"All the three had bullet wounds on their heads which is highly unlikely in a gunfight between the security forces and the militants. All of them were dressed in summer clothes, which is not possible for militants crossing the snowbound LOC where the gunfight was claimed to have occurred," the police officer said.

The army claimed to have killed three terrorists in Machil sector of the LOC after foiling an infiltration bid April 30.

It was also claimed that a large quantity of arms and ammunition had been recovered from the slain terrorists.

Train toll now 114, Mamata alleges political conspiracy

Jhargram/Kolkata: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today alleged there was a "political conspiracy" behind the Gyaneswari Express derailment without blaming Maoists for the disaster and demanded a CBI probe, as the toll climbed to 114.

Train toll now 114, Mamata alleges political conspiracy

As Banerjee and arch rival CPI-M indulged in a blame game, the train's driver B K Das filed a FIR with the Government Railway Police(GRP) unit in Jhargram in which he referred to an explosion on the track when the Howrah-Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express derailed in West Midnapore district, about 150 kms from Kolkata at around 1:30 am.

The FIR was filed against "unidentified miscreants" under sections 150 (maliciously wrecking or attempting to wreck a train) and 151 (damage to or destruction of certain railway properties)of the Railway Act but made no mention of Maoists.

Additional Director General Government Railway Police (GRP) Dilip Mitra said the FIR appeared to be not adequate. GRP comes under the jurisdiction of States.

"It is the duty of the West Bengal administration to find out who is responsible," Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata in remarks suggesting that Maoists, who have been blamed for the disaster in their heartland, cannot be held responsible until investigations are completed.

"From the Railway we have requested Union Home Ministry for a CBI investigation into the incident since it was in jangalmahal where joint operation is on. We have already sent a letter and the Centre has agreed to order it," she said.

Banerjee said she did not know who were behind it, but "whoever did it, it was a political conspiracy. The accident has happened two days before the (civic) election. One may be politically against us, but I feel bad that the way the incident was engineered to fulfil one's political interest.

Train toll now 114, Mamata alleges political conspiracy

"Those who have done this sabotage and played with so many lives should not be pardoned," she said.

CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury rejected as unfortunate and absurd Mamata's claims pointing fingers at the Left party. The claim was being done with tomorrow's civic elections in mind, Yechury said, adding Banerjee is trying to cover up her "serious lapses."

Apparently referring to the police report that fish plates were removed, Banerjee said, "I do not know from where this story has come. The railway lines there were long-welded railway lines which have no fish plates. She also said three express trains had passed through the derailment spot before the diaster at around 1.30 am yesterday.

With the recovery of more bodies from the mangled coaches today, the death toll rose to 114, South Eastern Railway sources said. Several bodies were yet to be identified. The number of injured has been put at 250 by officials.

As rescue teams still tried to cut their way into sections of the mangled wreckage, the sources said the toll would rise 'substantially' as more bodies could be there in the S-5 compartment.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S Karpurakayastha told PTI in Jhargram that the Maoist link in the derailment was clear, but declined to say if more evidence pointing to it has been found.

Asked about whether there had been a blast prior to the derailment, he said the forensic report was awaited.

WB train mishap: Mamata hints at conspiracy, denies fish plate theory
Updated on Saturday, May 29, 2010, 20:11 IST
Share
Zeenews Bureau

Kolkata: A day after the deadly Gyaneshwari express derailment, Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee on Saturday ruled out any sabotage and blamed it all on political conspirators.

The Railway Minister, while addressing a press conference in Kolkata ahead of the West Bengal civic polls, said that the accident was a consequence of political conspiracy.

But she refrained from naming any particular group responsible for the derailment of the ill fated train.

Describing the entire incident a heinous crime, Mamata Banerjee said that no mercy would be shown to those behind the incident.

Centre has agreed to order a CBI probe into the Gyaneswari express derailment, says Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. While refusing to disclose any information of the involvement of any group Mamata said "untile probe is over I can not pinpoint who is responsible for the Gyaneshwari express derailment".

In a surprising disclosure Mamata said that the track on which the train ran is known as 'long welded rail track' that has no fish plates, falsifying the earlier theory of fish plates being removed from the tracks.

"Explosives were placed on the entire track. But yet we could not find out which kind of explosives were they", Mamata Banerjee said.

Meanwhile Railway Board is taking precautionary measures by suspending late night trains running through dense forest areas.

"For political gains someone has tried to derail the Gyaneshwari express, Mamata said in the press conference."

Expressing deep grief for all those who lost their lives in the Gyaneshwari express mishap she said "I am grateful to all the locals who have helped in the rescue operation and may God give peace to the departed souls."

She also thanked all those young civilians who helped during the rescue operation. She added that politics was being played when she was busy in the rescue operation and every one is making the railways a soft target as Railway is the cheapest means of communication for the common people. CPI(M) slams Mamata's finger-pointing

CPI(M) today rubbished apparent suggestions by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee that the Left party could be behind the Jnaneswari Express disaster in West Midnapore, alleging that she was trying to cover up "serious" lapses and failures of her ministry in the incident.

Senior CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury also said some elements were "cynically" using the situation to further their petty partisan interests and claimed that it was done to influence public opinion before Bengal civic polls.

Yechury said it was Banerjee's duty to inform the country about her ministry's preliminary observations on the cause of the derailment that claimed at least 114 lives.

"She has rather chosen to shield the actual culprits by suggesting that Maoists may not be behind the sabotage...The minister continues to maintain that there was a blast that led to the accident while the Home Minister (P Chidambaram) has denied that possibility.

"It is clear that the Railway Minister is seeking to cover up the serious lapses of her leadership in the ministry and its failings in this tragic episode," Yechury said here.

During the first five months of this year, he said, the number of major railway accidents has been more than in any calender year since 1980.

Without naming any party, Banerjee said in Kolkata that "whoever did it, it was a political conspiracy. The accident has happened two days before the (civic) election. One may be politically against us, but I feel bad that the way the incident was engineered to fulfil one's political interest."

Yechury said it was indeed sad that instead of joining the country in the wake of a national tragedy, some elements were "cynically" using the situation to further their petty partisan interests.

He alleged that it was done in order to influence public opinion on the eve of the civic elections in Bengal.

Sabotaged and squashed
Express in path of goods train

Rajabandh (West Midnapore), May 28: Suspected Maoist sabotage today derailed a Mumbai-bound train from Howrah, causing five coaches to tilt into the path of a goods train on the parallel tracks and killing at least 80 people.

Over 140 others were injured in the 1.25am tragedy near Jhargram, which the CPM held up as proof of a Trinamul Congress-Maoist nexus two days before the civic polls, prompting Mamata Banerjee, after what seemed like initial hesitation, to finger the Naxalites too.

The train disaster, the worst in Bengal caused by subversion, comes days after the Maoists had targeted civilians in a bus in Chhattisgarh. Today's carnage was apparently triggered by removal of the clips that fix the rails to the sleepers but a blast on the tracks has not been ruled out.

Railway officials said the goods train's impact on coach S5 of the Howrah-Kurla Jnaneswari Express was so severe that its two walls "got pasted together", sandwiching the passengers in between.

They added that the death toll could rise because till late in the evening, many were still trapped inside S3, S4, S5 and S6, the four non-AC sleeper coaches that took the brunt of the goods train's impact.

Although 13 coaches had been derailed, only five had tilted towards the parallel tracks and got hit when the goods train arrived from the opposite direction within minutes.

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee blamed the Maoists at a morning news conference and, with the rebel-backed People's Committee Against Police Atrocities claiming responsibility, other CPM leaders quickly targeted Trinamul.

Mamata, who has repeatedly asserted there are no Maoists in Bengal, at first darkly hinted at a "conspiracy in an area controlled by the joint forces" but later said the tragedy was apparently caused by a Naxalite blast.

"The Maoists had planted a landmine that caused the train to derail," the railway minister said at the tragedy site, 25km from Kharagpur. "They must have known that the goods train was also approaching, which would compound the tragedy."

The biggest train disaster on Bengal's soil had taken place in August 1999 in North Dinajpur's Gaisal, when two trains had collided and killed nearly 300 people, but it had been blamed not on sabotage but a signalling error.

State director-general of police Bhupinder Singh, who reached the spot this morning, did not confirm the blast and said that prima facie, the removal of the Pandrol clips over a stretch of 50 metres had led to the tragedy.

He said clips had been removed also from a roughly equal stretch of the parallel tracks but the goods train had rammed into the Jnaneswari's coaches ahead of that part.

"There is a small crater near the tracks (of the Jnaneswari), but forensic experts would have to examine the spot to determine whether there had been a blast," Singh said.

He added: "The People's Committee has left behind posters saying it triggered this incident for the removal of the joint forces from here."

The state government has handed the case over to the CID but Mamata said she wanted a CBI inquiry.

Survivors and local people said more lives could have been saved had the rescue operations started earlier. Air force helicopters were deployed, for the first time in recent memory, to fly the injured to hospitals in Midnapore and Kharagpur around 6am.

Railway officials admitted that the affected coaches' emergency widows were opened only around 4am —two hours and a half after the incident — to begin the process of pulling out survivors and bodies.

They said the Jnaneswari, which had left Howrah at 10.50 last night, had rolled out of Kharagpur station at 12.55am and met with tragedy 3km ahead of Sardiha. The goods train driver died in the collision but the Jnaneswari driver, B. Das, claims there was a blast.

South Eastern Railway general manager A.P. Mishra said there was both "tampering of the tracks" and an explosion. "The derailment could have been caused by either or both these factors."

Officials said that 15 minutes after the derailment, driver Das had called up Kharagpur station to report the disaster.

Within 20 minutes, Jhargram police superintendent Praveen Tripathi was at the spot with 50 CRPF jawans. Half an hour later, Kharagpur divisional railway manager Anil Handa arrived with doctors and emergency supplies.

The medical team began treating those in the compartments that had been derailed but not been hit by the goods train. The rescue operations began only around 4am, after generators had been set up to provide light and senior divisional commercial manager Manoj Kumar had arrived with rescue teams and volunteers.

As injured passengers were pulled out, doctors and nurses who had arrived from Jhargram and Kharagpur carried out emergency treatment.

Gas cutters, deployed to cut open grills, arrived even later. "If only the gas cutters had arrived earlier, perhaps my parents and my brother could have been saved," said Altaf Ansari, 18, who had come to Calcutta from Nagpur to attend his aunt's wedding.

Ansari had crawled out through a gap in the coach but his parents and brother died inside S4.

"I could hear them groaning but I could not do anything," Ansari wept. "They died inside, unable to get help or get out."

Debashis Makul had managed to get out of S5 with his brother-in-law Siddharth Debnath, a doctor at the B.C. Roy Dental Hospital in Haldia. Makul said Debnath died in front of his eyes, waiting for medical help.

"If the rescue operations had started quicker, my brother-in-law would still be alive," he said

At the Kharagpur and Midnapore hospitals where the dead and the injured were taken, there was utter confusion over identifying the bodies piling up in their morgues.

Chief minister Bhattacharjee visited the two hospitals in the evening. Earlier in the day, he had cut short a news conference in Calcutta because he did not want to comment on "anything political" in this hour of tragedy.

Mamata, however, said law and order was a state subject and was therefore the responsibility of the state administration.

As some questioned her decision to let trains run through Maoist areas at night, she said: "It's a question of law and order and that is a state subject. What do I do?"

Railway officials contradicted Mamata's claim that the Maoists would have known the goods train was approaching. "Unlike passenger trains, goods trains do not have fixed timings. It was just a coincidence that the goods train was passing just then," an official said.

They added that trains did not exceed 75-80kmph while travelling through Maoist-affected areas, against a normal top speed of 110kmph.

MONSTERS
- NIGHT OF SCREAMS DAY OF SHOCK

An express train was thrown off tracks and rammed by an oncoming goods train in Maoist-active West Midnapore at 1.25am on Friday, triggering Bengal's worst train tragedy blamed on an act of subversion.

Eighty-one people died — at least one family has lost all its members — as the red goods carrier crashed into the blue express and reduced four bogies into mangled coffins. Survivors recounted a night of screams and chaos.

Many were trapped alive, some crying out but dying before rescuers could cut through the steel.

Opinion differed on the cause — an explosion or track-tampering — but it is more or less certain that the tragedy was the result of deliberate human intervention.

India Hunts Maoists After Deadly Train Incident

Who? Indian authorities are searching for Maoist rebels.

What? A train crash involving a packed passenger train and a goods train killed at least 115 people while injuring more than 200 others. Indian authorities blamed Maoist movement for the atrocity. Dozens of people are said to be in critical condition.

Where? The carnage took place when thirteen carriages of the Gyaneshwari Express travelling from Kolkata to Mumbai jumped the tracks and collided with an oncoming goods train in Jhargram area of West Bengal state's Midnapore district.

When? The attack took place at around 0130 local time on Friday morning, 28 May.

Why? The Maoists, also known as Naxalites, are waging a war in the name of rights for the poor and deprived people including marginalised tribes, lower castes and peasants in eastern and central India. The movement, that started in 1967, has its strongholds in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa states of India. They intend to establish a Maoist-style Communist state by overthrowing the Indian government.

How? The communist insurgents mount ambushes on police force and paramilitaries, detonate road-side bombs and target both civilian and military infrastructure like railway tracks, roads, mines and pipelines to carry out widespread sabotage. Reports suggest some 20,000 fighters form the deadly combat force that has claimed lives of thousands of people over the last 4 decades.
