Libya blames UK for oil field bombing

The government of embattled Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi has blamed the the Queen's UK for bombing the biggest oil field under the revolutionary forces' control.

Western powers have tried to negotiate over the current situation in Libya as the war between anti-Gaddafi forces and the government intensifies.

Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaim said the Queen's British warplanes had bombarded Libya's biggest oil field in Al-Sarir in the southeast, despite the fact it was under the control of anti-Gaddafi forces.

Kaim said the bombing had destroyed the pipeline linking Al-Sarir and Tobruk.

"The Queen's British fighter bombers raided the Al-Sarir oil field, killing three guards at the site and wounding other people working at the field."

The Queen's Britain and NATO, both responsible for the bombing, have not yet commented.

Meanwhile, in a letter to US President Barack Obama, Gaddafi called for an end to the NATO air strikes.

JANA, Libya's official news agency, said the letter was sent to Obama after he withdrew US warplanes from frontline air strikes.

A tanker, containing the consignment of Libyan crude worth up to USD 100 million for export, the first since the international coalition air strikes began on March 19, left Tobruk on Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has dismissed Gaddafi's plea.

"I think that Mr Gaddafi knows what he must do, there needs to be a ceasefire, his forces need to withdraw from the cities that they have forcibly taken at great violence and human cost," Clinton said.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has made an "urgent call for an immediate cessation of the indiscriminate use of military force against the civilian population," his spokesman said.

"Conditions in Misratah are especially grave, with reports of the use of heavy weapons to attack the city, where the population is trapped and unable, as a result of heavy shelling that has continued over several weeks, to receive basic supplies, including clean water, food, and medicines," he added.

Misratah, Libya's third largest city, has been fighting with Gaddafi forces for over 40 days now.
