Talks under Constitution not acceptable: Geelani

'Delhi Should Accept My 5-Point Proposal'

ALTAF BABA

Baramulla, Apr 22: Reiterating that talks under Indian Constitution were not acceptable to Kashmiris, the chairman of the Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday said only tripartite talks can bring an everlasting solution of the Kashmir dispute. "We are never against talks but any dialogue under the Indian Constitution is not acceptable to Kashmiris," Geelani said while addressing a public gathering at General Bus Stand Baramulla.

He said that since 1952, around 150 rounds of talks were conducted on Kashmir but since these talks were not tripartite, nothing was achieved. He asserted that India should accept his 5-point formula which can pave way for the dialogue process.
Referring to Dogra Certificate row, Geelani said that its main aim was to make Jammu a Dogra Desh and Kashmir a cantonment.

"Political parties like NC, PDP, Congress or BJP are fulfilling the aspirations of the hard line Hindu parties RSS, Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal," Geelani said. "Our struggle is a peaceful one and youth should show maximum restraint while protesting against atrocities," he said, adding that from 2008 to 2010, around 200 youths have been killed and 3000 injured by Government forces. He said that jails are crowded with Kashmiri youths.

On the assassination of Moulana Showkat, Geelani said that a committee has been constituted. "After the committee comes up with its report, then only we are entitled to comment," the veteran leader said.

Referring to Kashmiri Pandits, Geelani said that all those who belong to this soil have every right to live here. But he cautioned that the safe zones are not the remedy for the return of Pandits. He said that instead of residing in the safe zones, Pandits should reside with the majority community and it is the duty of the majority community to provide them protection.
