Cattle smuggling down by 80%, claims BSF

11 March 2012

statesman news service
KOLKATA, 11 MARCH: The Border Security Force said in a statement issued yesterday that cattle smuggling has decreased by "as much as 80 per cent" since February in Murshidabad district, following operations by their personnel and local police.
The BSF and local police now have a "joint strategy to arrest the movement of cattle towards the border villages" the statement reads, and have "also targeted suspected assembly points of the cattle" and "carried out joint raids."
The two forces started these operations in the first week of February and will adopt a similar approach in other border districts like Nadia and North 24-Parganas, the statement said.
A spokesperson at the BSF said that they were unable to give exact figures, but that the 80 per cent drop cited was compared to the same periods in 2010 and 2011.
The head of one organisation, which monitors violence on the border and cattle smuggling, has challenged the BSF statement, though. Mr Kirity Roy, who works for the human rights group Masum, said: "The claim is far from the truth."
While he welcomed BSF recognition in their statement that there is a network behind cattle smuggling, and that the cows are brought across the country from richer states, he said that the flow of cows remains "uninterrupted." He said: "Even this evening, the cows are going."
He called the statement an effort "to divert attention away from issues of human rights violations". Mr Roy also said that he is going to Delhi soon, and while there plans to file a Public Interest Litigation against the BSF with the Supreme Court.
