Romney takes 6 Super Tuesday states, Santorum nets 3 07 Mar 2012 CBS News projects that Mitt Romney will win Ohio's key primary contest Tuesday, after a neck-and-neck race with rival Rick Santorum to eke out a victory in the pivotal battleground state. Newt Gingrich is in third place with 15 percent and Ron Paul follows with 9 percent. Mitt Romney has also won primaries in Virginia, Massachusetts and Vermont, as well as the Idaho caucuses. Rick Santorum won primaries in Tennessee and Oklahoma, and in the North Dakota caucuses. In Georgia, Gingrich clinched his first primary victory since South Carolina's January 21 primary contest. Ron Paul did not win any contests on Tuesday, but he did finish second in four states: Vermont, Idaho, North Dakota and Virginia. The Associated Press reports that Romney also won Alaska's Super Tuesday caucuses.

Romney Appears the Ohio Winner; Santorum Strong 07 Mar 2012 Mitt Romney appeared to pull off a narrow victory in Ohio on Super Tuesday but lost several other states to Rick Santorum, a split verdict that overshadowed Mr. Romney's claim of collecting the most delegates and all but ensured another round of intense infighting on the road to the Republican presidential nomination. The result came at the end of a long night that put Mr. Romney that much farther ahead in the race for the nomination, but dashed any hopes he had of using the day to assert himself as the inevitable nominee. Far from bringing more clarity to the race as some in the party had hoped, Tuesday's elections gave every candidate cause to keep driving forward -- including Newt Gingrich, who won a definitive victory in Georgia. Santorum draws conservatives in Ohio GOP contest 06 Mar 2012 Rick Santorum was drawing robust support Tuesday from the most conservative voters in Ohio's Republican presidential primary, according to early results of an exit poll of voters. He was also managing a modest lead over rival Mitt Romney among the state's blue-collar voters, whom he has targeted in his drive to slow Romney's march toward the GOP nomination. Ohio was the most closely watched of the 10 states holding Super Tuesday presidential contests.

Kaptur defeats Kucinich in battle for new Ohio congressional district 06 Mar 2012 Veteran U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur defeated Rep. Dennis Kucinich on Tuesday in a closely watched Democratic battle in a newly drawn congressional district linking Toledo and Cleveland along the Lake Erie shoreline. The redrawing of the 9th district meant at least one of their political careers representing northern Ohio in Congress would end Tuesday night. Kucinich conceded defeat shortly after midnight, accusing Kaptur of running "a campaign lacking integrity, filled with false truths."

Netanyahu asked Panetta to approve sale of bunker-busting bombs, U.S. official says 06 Mar 2012 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested the United States approve the sale of advanced refueling aircraft as well as GBU-28 bunker-piercing bombs to Israel during a recent meeting with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, a top U.S. official said on Tuesday. The American official said that U.S. President Barack Obama instructed Panetta to work directly with Defense Minister Ehud Barak on the matter, indicating that the U.S. administration was inclined to look favorably upon the request as soon as possible. During the administration of former U.S. President [sic] George Bush, the U.S. refused to sell bunker-penetrating bombs and refueling aircrafts to Israel, as a result of American estimates that Israel would then use them to strike Iran's nuclear facilities. Following Obama's entrance into the White House, however, the United States approves a string of Israeli requests to purchase advance armament.

Netanyahu in AIPAC speech: Israel cannot afford to wait much longer on Iran 06 Mar 2012 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking at the AIPAC conference in Washington on Monday, called on the international community to acknowledge the fact that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Netanyahu reiterated the fact that Israel reserves its right to protect itself. He added that for Israel all options remain on the table. "I will never gamble with the security of Israel," he explained. Netanyahu warned of the dangers of a nuclear Iran. "A nuclear-armed Iran would dramatically increase terrorism by giving terrorists a nuclear umbrella," he said. [What about the dangers of a nuclear-armed Israel?]

Bin Laden WAS NOT buried at sea, but flown to the U.S. for cremation at secret location, claims intelligence boss in leaked email 06 Mar 2012 The fate of Osama bin Laden's remains have been called into question after emails leaked from an intelligence analysis firm say the body of the terror leader was actually sent to the U.S. for cremation. According to the emails, the Al Qaeda [al-CIAduh] boss was shot and killed during the famous Navy SEAL Team Six raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, was transported back to the U.S. and cremated. The emails were allegedly obtained by the hacker group Anonymous from Stratfor, an organisation dealing with analysis of intelligence and geopolitical analysis. It's also known as the 'Shadow CIA'. After 'bin Laden' was killed in the famous raid in Pakistan on May 2 2011, the Obama administration said his body was buried at sea off the USS Carl Vinson - in accordance with Islamic tradition. But in a set of emails given to WikiLeaks, the firm's vice president for intelligence, Fred Burton, says he doubts the official White House version of what happened to bin Laden's body. Burton says the body was 'bound for Dover, [Delaware] on [a] CIA plane' and 'onward to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Bethesda [Maryland]'. The claims are sure to stoke conspiracy theorists, especially since the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology that Burton refers to closed its doors on September 15, 2011, four months after bin Laden's death. [I don't know who the US pretended to kill and cremate (to eliminate DNA evidence), but see: News of Bin Laden's Death and Funeral - December 2001.]

Suicide attack on Afghan NATO base where Korans burned 05 Mar 2012 A suicide bomber killed at least two civilians Monday after detonating explosives at the gates of the NATO base where copies of the Koran were burned, Afghan officials said. The bomber targeted a vehicle belonging to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said district governor Kabir Ahmad Rahil, adding there could be foreign casualties, although a NATO spokeswoman said no coalition troops had been harmed in the attack on Bagram airfield. Four more civilians were wounded in the attack, Rahil said.

Anonymous hacks Panda Security in response to LulzSec arrests 06 Mar 2012 The hacktivist group Anonymous has attacked security firm Panda Security shortly after authorities today arrested five men part of Lulz Security. Anonymous has stolen liberated the account credentials of 114 employees working at Panda Security, and posted them online. Internal server details were also revealed. Lastly, they defaced more than two dozen subdomains within "pandasecurity.com" and other several domains owned by the security [sic] firm by modifying them to show a video recounting some of LulzSec's hacking highlights from last year. Luis Corrons, PandaLabs Technical Director, was singled out by the hackers for praising the arrests in a blog post earlier today. It was titled "Where is the lulz now?" Anonymous included links to his personal blog, his Facebook profile, his Twitter profile, and his Google+ profile.

FBI charges alleged Anonymous hackers after supergrass claims --Alleged members of the world's most notorious computer hacking gang face trial after one of its main players turned supergrass. The US is known to aggressively pursue the extradition of alleged hackers. 07 Mar 2012 The FBI has brought charges against six young men suspected of being leading lights in the loose network known as Anonymous, who are accused of having "waged a deliberate campaign of online destruction, intimidation and criminality". Among the accused named in New York federal court documents as taking part in "computer hacking conspiracy" are a 19 year-old from the Shetland islands, Jake Davis, and a 25 year-old from Doncaster, Ryan Ackroyd. They have already been arrested by British police but now face possible extradition to the US.

Protests Over Tuition Increases Jolt the Capitol 05 Mar 2012 (Albany) About 300 students, most of them from public universities in New York, rattled the Capitol on Monday with an outburst of loud protests, in the gallery of the Senate Chamber and outside the governor's office. The students, part of a statewide coalition of campus organizations called New York Students Rising, were objecting to the tuition hikes that were approved last year under a measure that permits public universities in New York to increase tuition by up to 5 percent per year over the next five years.
