Train firing kills one

Jan. 14: A worker on contract was shot dead and another wounded when two drunk free-trippers allegedly fired at them on the Howrah-Jammu Himgiri Express early today following a quarrel over blankets.

The ticket-less duo, who were standing near a vestibule between two AC two-tier compartments and drinking, ran through the coaches in front and escaped when the train stopped at Asansol station minutes after the 3am crime.

Ganesh Shaw, the injured contractor of the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited, alleged that he and his colleague Ram Sagar Thakur, both in their forties, were shot after they refused to give the duo blankets.

"The train left Howrah at 11.55 last night. The two unauthorised passengers were drinking liquor from a water bottle. They got involved in a brawl with the workers who protested around 3am," a passenger said.

Several passengers woke up hearing gunshots. "We thought robbers had entered the train," the passenger said. "I rushed out and saw two persons lying in a pool of blood. I saw two others running through the compartment in front," he added. The duo fled when the train stopped at Asansol at 3.17am.

Tapan Maji, a railway doctor, examined the two workers and declared Ram Sagar dead. Both took bullets in their chest and stomach.

While Ram Sagar hailed from Bihar's Mokama, Ganesh is from Barasat.

Dilip Karmakar, the government railway police inspector in Asansol, claimed the firing could have taken place after a drunken brawl. "I have come to know that the workers had consumed alcohol. The duo could have got involved in a brawl, following which the firing took place," he said, refusing to clarify who opened fire and where the firearm was.

Asked how could two ticket-less passengers travel almost 240km unchecked, divisional railway manager (Asansol) J.N. Jha said: "A two-member inquiry team has been set up to look into the role of the ticket collector and how the firing took place."
