Feds: Man planned terrorism attacks in Tampa 09 Jan 2012 Federal agents over the weekend arrested a Pinellas Park man described as having extremist jihadist beliefs who wanted to blow up a target in Tampa and create "terror" in victims' hearts. Sami Osmakac, 25, was taken into custody after an FBI sting operation in which he tried to buy explosives, at least 10 grenades, Uzis and an AK-47, authorities said. He was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.
100 soldiers at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on lockdown --They are not being allowed to go home until the investigation is complete. 09 Jan 2012 A company of soldiers at Joint Base Lewis-McChord were put on lockdown after officials discovered military equipment was missing. Since last Tuesday, about 100 soldiers with the 4th Stryker Brigade have been confined to one building on the base. Military police are investigating the disappearance of hundreds of pieces of weapon attachments they say were stolen, including rifle scopes and night vision goggles. A petition by a group called March Forward, a group of veterans and service members against war and racism, is being circulated to end the lockdown.

Pakistanis working at Bagram airbase removed from service 09 Jan 2012 A number of Pakistanis working at the US-run Bagram airbase in Afghanistan have been removed from service by the US Army. A citizen of Peshawar, Asif Ali, who worked as manager at the US Army Engineers Corps, in a Facebook message to American Consulate General in Peshawar said that the FBI terminated the services of Pakistanis without giving any reasons, possibly due to tense relationship between the two countries.
US army testing cargo drone in Afghanistan 08 Jan 2012 The US military is testing a revolutionary new drone for its arsenal, a pilot-less helicopter intended to fly cargo missions to remote outposts. This is the first time a chopper version of a drone designed for transport has been used operationally. Two unmanned models of the Kaman K-MAX helicopters and a team of 16 company technicians and 8 Marines are conducting a 6-month evaluation program for the new craft at Camp Dwyer, a Marine Corps airfield in the Garmsir district of southern Helmand Province.
Car bomb attacks kill 15 in Iraq 09 Jan 2012 At least 15 people have been killed and dozens of others have been injured in two separate car bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The attacks targeted police officers as well as Shia pilgrims making their way to the holy city of Karbala for religious commemorations. According to Iraqi security sources, seven people were killed after an explosives-laden car detonated near a police vehicle in the northeast neighborhood of al-Shaab. Nineteen others were also injured in the blast.

The verdict was issued by Tehran's Revolution Court on Monday after the defendant was found guilty of collaboration with the US government and its intelligence agency, the CIA, against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Mirzaei Hekmati was charged with attempting to infiltrate Iran's intelligence apparatus in efforts to implicate the Islamic Republic in sponsoring terrorism. The defendant was hired by the CIA in May 2009 to carry out espionage operations in Iran.
'US spies were to disrupt Iran polls' 08 Jan 2012 Iran's Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi says the spies recently arrested in Iran were plotting to implement US plans during upcoming Iranian parliamentary polls. Moslehi said on Sunday that the espionage agents were planning to disrupt the elections, using guidelines communicated to them from outside the country and generating disturbances through online social networking websites. Moslehi said the fifth columnists were arrested after their activities and liaisons were fully established by Iran's Intelligence Ministry.
S.Korea police investigating rumour of nuclear explosion in N. Korea 08 Jan 2012 The national police said on Saturday they have launched an investigation into an earlier market rumour about a nuclear explosion in North Korea, trying to determine if speculators had intentionally spread the false report to make profits. The rumor spread on Friday that a light-water reactor had exploded in North Korea and was leaking radioactive materials that could reach South Korea.

The online hacktivist group claimed it had stolen intelligence analysis firm Stratfor's confidential client list, which included the U.S. Defense Department, Army, Air Force, law enforcement agencies, top security contractors and technology firms like Apple and Microsoft, over Christmas. Among the huge trove of private information exposed by the group are email addresses/personal information belonging to 221 British military officials, 242 NATO staff and 19-thousand U.S. military personnel.

The 'LulzXmas' Stratfor hack took place on Christmas Eve last year. The US Cyber Consequences Unit, a Washington-based research organisation that analysed the leaked details for The Guardian, found the list of victims to include 221 British military officials and 242 Nato staff members, the newspaper reported on Sunday. Seven Cabinet Office officials were also on the list, as were 23 MPs and peers, 45 Foreign Office officials, 14 Home Office officials, 67 police officials and two royal employees.

Thin ice jeopardizes polar bears in Manitoba 08 Jan 2012 Hundreds of polar bears in northeastern Manitoba may face an increased risk of starvation due to delayed ice formation along the western coast of Hudson Bay, conservationists say. Higher-than-normal temperatures have prevented ice from forming in the region, putting it three to four weeks behind schedule, according to the Canadian Ice Service, a division of Environment Canada. As a result, minimum ice cover there is the lowest since 1971, Canadian Ice Service forecaster Luc Desjardins said.
