Israel fears democracy in Egypt

Sun Feb 13, 2011 7:23PM

Ehud Barak

Israel has warned against an election that would allow all political parties to compete in Egypt, two days after a historic revolution ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak says a political shift will happen if Egyptian authorities rush into an early election.

He added that the participation of some opposition groups in the election will bring about a catastrophic situation in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Barak assured that diplomatic ties between Tel Aviv and Cairo are not at risk despite the ouster of Mubarak.

"I don't think that the relationship between Israel and Egypt is under any risk, or that any kind of operational risk is waiting for us just behind the corner," Barak told ABC's "This Week" program.

However, in stark contrast to Barak's comments, Israel has shut down its embassy in Cairo.

The developments come as Egyptian protesters are still out on the streets protesting the military's decision to stay in charge for six months or until elections.

Protesters want all their demands met, including transition of power from the military to a civilian, democratic government.
